Great video, chock full of tips! I have a similar spreadsheet for my dahlias, but I didn't think to include the counts of them and be able to easily tally up the rows! I haven't yet planned the order of where my dahlias will go, but I'll take into account your thoughts and suggestions!

You were talking about rotational cover crops to enhance the soil. You may want to look into buck wheat. We use it on our hayland as a rotational crop and it works really well.

Just watched all your videos. This is my first year growing dahlias and your videos have great explanations and clear shots! I hope to see more, like a dahlia tour of your garden later this season maybe? Also I have a question, I’m growing in hawaii and my lowest winter temps this year was maybe 70 deg F. I’m planning on digging up my tubers later because I have rainy winters. But how will I know when to dig up my tubers if there is no frost?

Thank you, Geoff, you are too kind! I definitely didn’t feel eloquent while making the video! I’m practicing making videos with lists of notes and not “scripting,” so this one took a few extra tries 😅. Isn’t it so surprising how difficult it is to look “natural” on camera 😂?!

Thank you for this video! It is so smart and practical. You don't even have to have a dahlia farm or grow a lot of them to need some kind of planning. I am just a gardener who put in a whole bunch of dahlias (~30 tubers) last year in the garden without a lot of planning. Tags get lost or damaged, and trust me, you may think you know where you plant everything, but you'll forget. Unfortunately, I've lost track of at least half of my dahlias. I'll have to "relabel" them when the flowers come out. I can't wait to put my dahlias in the ground this year--with more planning, of course. Thank you again for your videos! Have you had an experience with gophers or ground dwelling critters? I must have lost 1/3 of my tubers to them last year.

Hi!! Yes, absolutely! I don't know how many times I have planted something without labeling and told myself "I'll remember" 😂🤦‍♀️. I never remember. I hope your identification and relabeling process this summer goes smoothly! (Here's a random tip that may be helpful: If you ever have any trouble identifying a variety, dahlia facebook groups can be so great for this! People aren't always right, but usually someone will know the same. I've identified so many dahlias this way!). I don't have experience with gophers, groundhogs, etc. (these creatures aren't in my area but I hear they can be so hard on dahlias). I do have trouble with damage from some small rodents (field mice? voles?), but mostly in the late fall. If I dig my dahlia up right away and store them, that helps. I've also noticed that my new landscape fabric mulch seems to create a great habitat for rodents. If you have a local agricultural extension agency or master gardener answer clinic/hotline, I'd recommend starting there for local rodent damage advice... I know there can be tricks, and regionally specific advice might be best! Best wishes! 💐 Eve

Hi Evelyn 🌷Just wondering if you have any advice on how to deal with grasshoppers ? 😢, I can grow fabulous dahlias, but the grasshoppers are eating the buds before they can bloom and then continue to eat any blooms that managed to survive. Have you considered using tulips during the off season? Probably not in all of your space since it looks like you have a very large space. But its something I’m experimenting with this year.

I live in Alberta, Canada in zone 2-3. I grew my first dinner plate dahlia's this year and was pleasantly surprised with the blooms. I recently pulled them out of the garden. Some of the root systems were huge. My question is should I be dividing them after the first year or should I be waiting for a couple more years. I also sliced through some of the tubers damaging them. I assume I should be removing the damaged ones before I store them. Looking forward to your reply

I’m in Canada too! (Southern BC, near the border.) You’re going to want to dig them up each fall. I experimented 2 years ago with overwintering about 40 of them that I was ok if they didn’t make it. I had heard about overwintering and wanted to see for myself if it could work in my area. We got through winter and appropriately two thirds had turned to complete mush and didn’t come back. Some did survive my experiment, sure, but I have decided it’s not worth the risk. I will dig and store all mine each year, and I’m in zone 8b…pretty much the Hawaii of Canada. It just gets too cold and is so, SO wet. (Dahlias don’t prefer winters like that.) Tip: Dig with a forked tool, not a shovel that will slice tubers…and start farther back from the plant than you think you need to. That should help. It’s good to divide them. It’s tricky knowing how, but you’ll learn. There’s lots of very helpful KZread channels to educate yourself on what you need to know. (In my humble opinion, Evelyn’s channel is one of the most useful/helpful ones out there, so you’re in the right place!)

Hi there! I don't limit any eyes/sprouts/branches on the tubers, especially newly planted tubers. In fact, once sprouts start coming up and get a few sets of leaves, I pinch/prune the plants to encourage them to make as many branches as possible, which leads to more blooms. It can be good to divide plants every couple of years (3?) because tuber clusters get so big and seem to start growing closer to the soil surface (plus I like to divide to get as many dahlias as possible, in general 😂💐 it's an obsession). Other than that, the more branches, the merrier! For winter cover crop I wonder if winter rye will work…I’ve heard it germinates and grows (slowly) even if it’s cold. I’ve also heard it’s harder to kill off after it’s done it’s job and has strong roots, so do your own research, I don’t have experience with many cover crops since I don’t till, although I do grow some cover crops just for having the flowers there and attracting beneficial insects…pink buckwheat, crimson clover, Dutch clover, phacelia, etc.

Yes. I’m in southern BC. I experimented with overwintering about 40 dahlias a couple years ago and lost about two thirds of them. If they freeze they turn to mush.
