This is so helpful. Thanks. Mine are right at the point of pruning off the ill-formed or sickly looking fruit. Great timing.

Grease bands and tree barrier glues are a pesticide-free method for preventing infestations of winter moth caterpillars in the spring. Fruit trees, especially apple, plum, cherry and pear. The grease band or glue needs to be kept sticky and free of detritus from late October until April.

Do you know how well the Shinko will propagate from cutting?

  • @KhangStarr

Propagating pears is a bit difficult, but you can try a better method called "air layering". You will get better success with trees using this method.

Question about fire bright. I bought a barefoot hosui tree. I just now notice a black color on the tip of the branches.. is that what I’m dealing with?? There no new growth just yet. And I see black tip and some black spots on the branch. Oh man I wanna cry! It hasn’t even begin yet.

  • @KhangStarr

Black tips could mean that the tip of the branch is dead and dried up. I can't say for sure it's blight. Try planting the tree, the new shoots/leaves should start to come out after a few weeks if weather is good. Contact the company and let them know just in case, so you'll have something to fall back on if you need to file a return.

Most soft bodied insects can't tolerate a vigorous spraying with water of decent pressure.

Be careful putting tangle foot directly on the bark of young trees if you get too much sun it can burn the tender bark.

The first year you plant fruit trees you should not allow it to fruit. This allows the tree to establish a more solid root system. Growing will go to the root system as opposed to the the fruits. It hurts, but pluck them. Then allow a few next year. You want a good solid tree later.
