You can always give your trees a haircut during the summer months. They'll branch out at those locations that you cut. I do both minor branch thinning (taking off water sprouts / clearing out the center on open center training styles) and a little branch tipping to get the next set of branches started in good locations. If you're trying to keep the trees to say 8' tall, you'll probably want a decent amount of branches starting fairly low on the tree. This winter you can make those heavier heading / tipping cuts so that your fruiting branches are at reasonable heights.

You inspired me to start growing hydroponics, I ordered the Kratky supplies from one of your video links and started about a month or so ago. It opens so many new doors for us, we are in Zone 10a in Southwest Florida and these months of the year are the slow months for gardening because of the heat, but having so much fun with Hydroponics inside. Thinking about converting my garage into a cooking studio for our videos and a hydroponic growing area so we can grow the veggies for our recipes within walking distance of the kitchen.

Thanks, Khang! When you covered the fruits from the birds it reminded me of how big farms covered their fruits too and I wondered if this is the reason why as well.

Thank you for your series. I too have clay, so it was great to be able to follow your lead. I’m way further north than you (gulf islands, BC,Canada) but my tree is in its second season after planting and doing really well. I would love for you to post a video about pruning.

Thanks! I do prune very aggressively to keep them short. My trees are doing amazing this year! The only problem I have is thrips destroying most of my fruits.

You should try and graft some of the different varieties to the other trees so all of them are multiple varieties, that would be pretty cool to see if it works when it's DIY.

Thank you for sharing your experiments. I am going to grow an asian pear tree like you. What kind of paste you put around the cup to prevent ant ? and the bag you use to cover your fruit? when is the time to fertilize the tree? Looking forward to seeing your reply. Have a good day!

I've heard you can do something similar using petroleum jelly to prevent insects crawling up trunks. Haven't verified it via testing.

Did you give any fertilizer or amendments to your Korean giant? I put mine in the ground last year and that put on maybe 2 inches of growth no lateral branches. This year it's grown about 3 inches on the central leader with a few side branches from that new growth like how yours looked in April. The lower part of the central leader has a few leaves but they're on the leader branch, no side branching. Amazed that yours branched so much after 3 months. I'm wondering if that's what'll happen to mine. I'm in NYC and haven't fed it anything, only watered.

I have an Asian pear tree that I plated 2 years ago. It was just a twig. It’s growing but still no fruit. I’m not sure if I have a self pollinating one or not. I’ve done more research now and thinking of getting a Shinko and growing it on my deck in a pot. Semi dwarf shinko in a pot. What do you think?
