Both the S1 Audi and the S4 Lancia lapped the Estoril GP circuit in Portugal in a time fast enough for them to be on the 4th row of the GP Grid in about 1985-86, so gives you an idea of how brutal these machines really were, and if allowed to continue these days, would be just too quick with modern technology helping them. GREAT THOUGH... LOVE THEM TOO!!!!

Gracias!!! I have remembered when I was a child and went with my father to see in action these monsters. They didn't sound like todays cars, nor? jejeje And if you combine these sound with the battery of lights in the front of the cars in night rallies, the result were that you see actual UFO's flying just directly to you! That's were emotions!

Just like to mention that in 2004/5/6? (cannot remember) a metro 6r4 (probably the slowest of the Groub B Cars) came 8th in Ireland Overal against the WRC cars (at the hands of Colin McRae RIP) just goes to show that a well driven S1/T16/S4 could possibly still win a rally even 20 years later against modern technology.

HELL YEAH!!! ;) in 5 weeks nearby my hometown a hillclimbin-contest ("Bergrennen") with old group b and classic-cars, organiced by some motor-sport-clubs, will startin.after a pause of more than 20 years! i always were sad when thinkin, that i was not that times not able to see that. and now that! i´m gettin wet of pre-happiness!!! :D Hail to the tires! ;) sry for bad english

@alexneszmer but the lanica delta s4 also competed in the group b races. the 037 had 325hp and 1170kg while the delta s4 had 500+ hp and 890kg.

600+ HP in a compact race car driving,the pilot and co-driver must work together and be in-sinc mentally,one mistake and it could be their last. through ,mud,gravel,snow and tarmac with road hazards such as lives stock,crests 80mph+jumps,and the crazy fans on the roads.Constant weather changes ,where a simple tire choice can decide the out come..Pure adrenaline lets you know your alive,Rally is the best motorport nothing else compares...

Its all down to their pace notes writen before the rallies, without them (as today) they just could not determine how fast to take corners etc. They even had ice crews that would report back to the teams the up-to-date road conditions just prior to the car setting off for the stage, except in the RAC in England where pace notes were not allowed. Had the pleasure years ago to drive Sport Quattro (ex audi sport uk car) and frightened myself nearly to death.

ditchs14: i think those cars didnt turn very well at slow speeds because of the huge grip amount they had to have. these cars had so much power, its incredible.

OMFG look at it. hear the revs it's driving and steering on the throttle, the only thing these drivers were doing was battling to convert power into forward motion. Just hear the revs when they accelarate out of corners wheelspin all the way. Absolute right foot control with a little help from the steering wheel ;)

Yeah, i mean this is real motorSPORT, it takes a very skilled driver to drive like this, Drag racing you need to be fast at shifting gears and take a lot of G-force, so its very different,

Its about 300, but thats not the whole story, they have massive torque figures and put down 300bhp on the road with ease unlike the group B cars which really struggle putting power down, no traction control, electric diffs etc. It was just brute power in those days. Dont forget that the S1 had the potential for 1000 bhp
