A simple grounding exercise for managing anxiety and triggering the parasympathetic response. This simple activity can help you feel calm by giving you a practical way to use your five senses to remind your brain that you are actually safe.
Grounding skills are more effective than coping skills for anxiety because they provide a longer-lasting and more sustainable way to resolve anxiety. Instead of just avoiding your anxiety, you will actually be re-training your nervous system to be calm.
These grounding exercises for anxiety can be helpful for panic attacks, anxiety attacks, and PTSD, and they work well with both children and adults.

About Me:
I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I have worked in various settings of change and growth since 2004. My experience includes juvenile corrections, adventure therapy programs, wilderness therapy programs, an eating disorder treatment center, a residential treatment center, and I currently work in an outpatient therapy clinic.
In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love www.churchofjesuschrist.org/c...

1. Take deep breath and breath out. 2. Touch, see, hear 3 things in environment and describe them in mind. 3. Notice how body feels.

The number 1 is the one that I physically can't do. I simply can't take a deep breath. The lungs can't fully expand. I think cov!d damaged both the autonomic nervous/muscle systems. Apparently, everyone with Long Cov!d or post cov!d syndrome experiences not just shortness of breath due to what could be respiration/ diaphragm muscle freeze/malfunction along with abnormal high pulse rate upon slight exertion but also malfunction with the LES (Lower Esophageal Sphincter Muscles) and swallowing muscles.
This was really helpful! Thank you!

I just started this this week. I find its important to do it the very 1st thing, before other things cloud my emotions. This helps me throughout my day, even!
I did this exercise and then I yawned..this means this exercise hit the spot. Love you Emma for helping us.

So glad I found this, sometimes it can be hard to remember doing this when I’m experiencing a trigger. Your voice and presence have a very calming effect too. Thank you for making this video!
Thank you for these videos (anxiety sufferer). I can see they will be quite helpful in the long run with daily practice. God bless.
not only is she smart but also so beautiful . and to makes things even better your voice is so calming . thank you !
Trying to do this with major hearing loss and raging adhd! I am so grateful for these videos and CC. Thank you for caring ❤️🙏
Best part was the hearing my mother sister and neice were singing focusing on that was awesome thank you,
Thank you, I like the simple way you described how to get present to the moment. I feel getting into your body, feeling the body and grounding yourself in the body is really essential there, so we don't just get lost in our head thinking about what our senses gives us in terms of inputs, but also kind of "experience" them in our bodies.
I just quickly googled a grounding exercise on the verge of a panic attack. This was very helpful in this moment, thank you x
I just performed these exercises and my anxiety immediately lowered and I felt more balanced as I was standing and began walking. Thank you so much for all that you do for us listeners! God Bless You!
Thank you! I discovered this channel a few days ago and I really like it 🙂

Thank you so much
Thanks Dr viking is fully happy
Love your videos! Love your calming voice too. Wondering if you would consider doing a video of affirmations? I often wish I had a video to play with affirmations that help calm the anxious person, such as "you are safe" and "you are worthy of happiness", etc. Your voice would be perfect for this type of video.
Great exercise. Thank you.
Thank you :) This is helping with my dpdr. Bless
Yes I hsve been aware of the benefit of grounding but now I know the importance of regular Repeat during the day that's a major factor so will be trying that thanks so much ❤
This is just amazing you are amazing thanks so much
So good. Thank you.
THANK YOU SO MUCH
I've been having a constant panic attack for two weeks now, I haven't really slept in that time as well. My tummy is not wanting me to put food in it. I threw up twice when I tried eating proper meals, so I kind of just eat little chunks when I can bare to get something down. My skin is burning and I have developped a harsh rash on my face, neck and bag from all the stress. It's itching. But for those couple of minutes I actually felt safe. So thank you sooooo muuuuch.
Love it! Thanks!
Great video! Helps a lot. I also like to say an affirmation or one thing I like about myself afterwards
A grounding bag has helped me so much!
I do 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 method all the time this was similar but at the same time different I like this one better. It helped everything immediately. Thank you
