Grocery Shopping in St. Petersburg, Russia 2021

Today we’re going to do some grocery shopping at a grocery store in St. Petersburg, Russia. This store chain is called Perekrestok and it is one of the best chains I’ve seen in the country so far. The prices are very fair and there’s a broad selection of local and imported goods. If you are travelling to Russia and don’t speak Russian, don’t worry, you can get by without speaking at all and at the end of the video I teach you the few words you need to know.
Grocery stores are located almost on every block here in St. Petersburg, but not all of them are of the same quality. For example, most of them are cheap, fast grocery chains where you can get the very basics. When you arrive in Russia you should try out different stores, because there are a few good ones out there like Perekrestok and international chains like Spar are growing rapidly.
Soon I’ll film a Vlog in Kazan! But for the next few videos I’ll show you outdoor activities and the Galeria Mall. The weather has been amazing so far this summer and it will be even better the next few months.

@@tyryonolofing3405 . Actually, keeping housing and food prices low is the way to still pay the low wages and by that to speed up the capital growth. Russian government is hardworking and clever. Don’t forget, devastating situation after collapse of Soviet Union. What they managed, that was the optimal of what was possible. I wish Russians would be more appreciative of their government. I am saying it, because in West we have ideological idiots or clueless people in power. Many of us in America, think that Russians are lucky! I am not exaggerating.

@@alexsimpson79 well, there are some other troubles. Yep, government does works hard, but direction of the work is quite.. Well it's just questionable. Government doesn't consists of idiots, and yes, it's doesn't politically dictated - it can use any mean at any time, if they want, except for some too harsh of costly. But the trouble is in the foundations. Russia is essentially a country, which governed in all aspects by a people, who work for the state itself. They are mostly appointed by President of his office themselves, and they mustn't even consult with duma, except for government - but with constitutional supermajority, you guess what? Government is just appointed by President on his view. That also is truth for the highest and constitutional Court, region governors up to a date elections.. So well, this isn't like everything is ok. But government policy is based on a fact, that "a true Russian" mustn't be interested in politics. Slogans are just like "elect and forget". So not it's like all is super cool. Everyone has own troubles. Now it's time for Russians to understand, that if we won't act for our future - no one will care too much about it. Well, I guess, your lessons are different - about distinctions between what lays within science, what within politics, and what can be dictated by a Law. We have already know, what results when ideology messes up with science and intervents economy without any back thoughts. Nothing good at all, that's for sure. Also internet.. Well, this is a thing. Huge thing. He is a game changer for society, so I just hope for bright future, better for everyone.

@@tyryonolofing3405 thanks for your response. Yes , Russia today is the centralized government, but I would argue, that it is exactly what you need for time being, until certain goals will be achieved. Simply , because centralized governance is is the most effective! There is no doubt about it . Of course, the head should be the clever , intelligent and able of strategic thinking. You have exactly that! Now look at us in USA , look what’s going on in Washington, two party system is totally paralyzing normal functioning of the government, by constant power struggle and blocking each other’s agenda in order to make the opponent party appear the total loser. And in addition the House of Representatives, in another words the Congress and senate are fractured and corrupt by lobbyists ( which is literally official corruption, with official bribes! ) , lobbyists we have from military industrial, big Pharma, oil, tech and you name it and as well lobbyists wealthy groups that support Israel interests and there are from other countries too. US , as empire was simply accepting money and bribes from every direction possible. To maintain its hegemony it placed 800 military bases all over the world! We , the American people are living in colony, literally, many of us on the streets as homeless! I can go on and on about all the unimaginable wrongs and injustice that’s going on. Russia rise with dignity, mental normalcy and cleanliness and value of its culture and beauty. Just try to be fair and be happy!

@@alexsimpson79 I agree with you....The system in the USA is HYPOCRISY ,as democracy (which existed in Ancient Greece )was vastly different...In the USA you got the terror of the Satanic Trinity made up of the Big Business,Judiciary and the Politicians, whereas in the Ancient Greece they elected by Lottery (in your system they elect by wallet...) and those elected were the Best members of the Greek Society (men of the older age, of spotless reputation, husbands of one wife and with decent adult child/children) and they were charged with implementing what the Greek people decided by way of debates and referendums....In your system one can only elect pack of pre-selected proverbial '''puppets''' and they once elected do whatever they want ..so in the other words in the Ancient Greece they SERVED the people, while in your hypocrisy they terrorize the people...the mega rich don't pay the taxes ... why ? I can't believe you actually found pasta sauce! I had to get "ketchup for spaghetti" and try to make pasta sauce out of that; it wasn't very good, and I didn't know at the time how to make it from scratch. However, if you make some homemade cheeseburgers (they'll call them "Gomburgers") your Russian friends will love them. The only burgers they're familiarly with are from McDonald's. Back when I was there (1999-2003) there was a popular street food of Turkish origin, and they were everywhere, called "Shashleek" - chicken cooked on a spin, shaved off into a pita with vegetables and some kind of cucumber sauce for about 16 rubles; amazing! I wonder fi those are still around? If you see any, give it a try.

On Amazon, goods are expensive for Russia. There are a large number of Russian online stores where the same things are much cheaper. I don't know anyone around who would use Amazon. I think many do not even know what it is. Or many people order goods directly from China. It is twice cheaper if you buy this product in Russia. I ordered a flashlight from China for $ 5. But I saw it on Amazon for $ 18. That is, prices are overheated. This Product cannot cost that much. Well, as usual, this leads to the eternal dispute about the size of salaries in Europe and in Russia or China. Everything is relative. For one and the same job, I pay 100 dollars in Russia, and when I come to the United States, I find out that the same job costs 1100 dollars. Here's some information to think about. And so in everything - in the prices of food and goods. That is, my idea is that these goods and services cannot cost so much, in principle, since in another country the same work and the same goods are several times cheaper.

In fact it depends on the place.St.Petersburg is notorious for bad tap water. Just as many big cities. Some smaller places, villages and so on might have great drinking water coming out of a faucet. Filtering though has become so popular, that some newly built houses have an extra faucet, next to the normal one for drinking water pre-installed where the water would go through a filter. Some people would install those on their own or buy an extra filtering decanter for drinking water.

The water which is coming out of waste waste treatment plants is normally very good, however due to a long and sometimes very old city pipes system it can be contaminated with too much iron oxide and bacteria which accumulate in some stagnant zones of the pipe system. In order to avoid bacteria contamination water treatment plants add chlorine to the water. It is a combination of chlorine and iron oxide which gives unpleasant taste of the city water, but otherwise it is safe enough to drink, but not tasty. So if you want water without unpleasant taste, you can use bottled water or install a filter just before your tap.
