Visiting Catherine Palace | Tsarskoye Selo!
I show you how to get to Catherine Palace aka. Tsarskoye Selo, south of St. Petersburg, Russia!
Today we are heading to Catherine Palace, Tsarskoye Selo in Russian. It is located in Pushkin, south of the city, so I am going to show you how to get there. You are going to want to head over to the Vitebskiy Vokzal train station, which is close to Puskinskaya Metro Station, Red Line. When you get to the Train station, go around the right side to the suburban train lines. There you’ll get your tickets to Puskin, we got round trip tickets for 100 roubles, which is approximately $1.5 USD.
We’ve reached the Pushkin train station, and now we will take a local bus to Catherine Palace. If you have a metro card you can use it on these buses as well, just cross the street from the train station and you’ll see the bus stops. There are maps at the bus stops that show you which bus number to take, just ask the driver if he’s going to Tsarskoe Selo.
Our first stop is going to be the Hermitage Pavilion, it was begun by Mikhail Zemtsov in 1744 and completed by Rastrelli in 1756. A “Hermitage” means a private secluded place, and Empress Elizabeth, daughter of Peter the Great, wanted a place that was both private and stunning for guests to visit.
The story of the Amber Room is fascinating so I suggest you read it if you’re into art history. I can give you a basic introduction. The Amber room was made in Berlin, then part of Prussia, completed in 1707. In 1716 Prussian King Frederick William I gifted the room to Tsar Peter the Great of the Russian Empire, so it was taken apart and reinstalled in Catherine Palace. During WWII, the Amber room was looted by the Nazis and taken to Konigsberg to be put on display. From there, the Amber room was either destroyed by the fire-bombing of Konigsberg, Red Army artillery fire, or it was hidden somewhere and still hasn’t been found. The reconstruction of the amber room began in 1979 and was inaugurated by Putin and Angela Merkel in 2003.

Always amazed by the people who worked in museums during the war... Trying to save as much as possible even during the siege of Leningrad... Deep Deep bow
This palace was my favorite. Also in St. Petersburg you should visit as many palaces as you can. If you are a history lover you should visit the Peter & Paul chapel with the marble tombs of the Czars dating back you Peter the Great up to Czar Nicholas II and family who were murdered in 1918. On my next trip I hope to see Peterhof Palace. If you are around Moscow the St. Sergius Monastery is about 40 miles from town. The architecture there is breathtaking .

@@maratshaydullin57 So, I was raised Catholic and most of the Catholic Churches I’ve been to were heavily decorated with iconography, the center piece being Jesus on the cross. A place like Tsarskoye Selo, while not a church, feels a lot like the altars at Catholic Churches. The Italian influence is evident, the large paintings on the ceilings for example resemble those in the Vatican, also something present in Versailles. The amount of gold used in these Russian palaces probably has something to do with the fact that heaven in the orthodox religion isn’t an entirely white, bright world, instead, it is imagined to be Golden.

Russia is a wonderful country, of course, and there are so many places I still have to visit. But, from what I have seen so far, Russia is absolutely beautiful and the people as well. Kind, warm, and welcoming people. Russians should be proud to call this country their home. I was born in Russia and I want to call it home one day too. I can’t say I am Russian because I didn’t grow up here, I lived in 7 countries. But Russia is so misunderstood internationally, we have to break the stereotypes.
So if it was heavy damage during ww2...then everything there now in that palace is replica?

it is almost completely restored, but when I compare it to pictures from before and after I think some of the intricacies were lost. Obviously the furniture and tapestries are missing so it doesn't feel the same way. And! the chandeliers are gone, I found some of them recently in Washington DC at the Hillwood Estate

Hi, Ricardo. As your Russian proficiency progresses and if you're not coming back to Boston for a while, see if you can film and interview Russians (could be quick 5-15 minutes interviews) from different ages/backgrounds/towns. Even with omni-presence of internet, person to person cultural connections on everyday life topics are nearly non-existent. 80%+ of Americans and Russians are still living in the world full of clichés and propaganda. You don't need to take sides or take any political agenda -- just be that American in Russia that talks to commoners and shares findings un-cut, un-edited.

Russia. There are no fat bodies everywhere. There are no men kissing in public. Aggressive citizens with posters about infringement of their rights. But there are beautiful people. Beautiful buildings and nature. No one will attack you and no one will fire a weapon. Everyone says what he thinks, and is not afraid of anything. Totalitarian Russia...
