Thank you for the video. I live in the Netherlands and have recently purchased a 12-inch planer combo from a Dutch vendor called HBM. It appears to be the same machine as yours, but it lacks the spiral cutters. The Grizzly manual looks much better, I think that I will be using it instead 😅

Just unboxing mine right this minute looking for a couple of tips on getting going. Thank you for your warning about the plastic on/in the crank. Knowing in advance staved off my own irritation and I used my trusty pocket knife to trim the plastic away cleanly. Thank tremendously for including the bit about the dust collector “free hanging” in jointer mode. That had me stumped.

I have had this same unit for about 6 months. It is not obvious, but the top of the crank nob unscrews so you can remove the plastic and then screw it back on. It's a lot cleaner than trimming the plastic away.

This was the perfect review for me, I am considering it just for the jointer capacity, I have the Dewalt planer, it would probably spend all its time in jointer, still seems a good deal for a 12 inch jointer!

Had the same issue with removing the plastic wrap from the handle of my G0940. Seems to me the top cap would come off somehow.

Excellent video, I had considered buying one of these but fortunately found a good 10 year old Hammer A31 for $1000.00 instead. It takes a lot less fiddling to switch between planer and jointer but also takes up a lot more room. This machine seems a good alternative to the DeWalt and a benchtop jointer.

For that price I probably would have gone that route too! But unfortunately I couldn't afford a new one.

I just bought the G0959, the cap to the handle pops off and there is a bunch of plastic inside to remove.

No problem, loving mine so far. The jointer was perfectly coplaner out of the box, but I do get some snipe when planing.

Great review. When converting from a jointer to a planer, can you simply slide the fence down to the right or are you forced to bevel the fence away along with sliding it? I would rarely use a bevel cut and it would be nice to keep the fence set a 90 degrees when converting between the two modes. In other reviews, I've noticed that you may be able to simply slide the fence to the right before moving the dust stroud. I'm really considering the purchase of this device instead of buying a Dewalt 735X and a desktop jointer. My shop space is limited, so the combo feature is nice.

The fence is probably one of the weaknesses in design but not enough for me to consider it an issue. It either has to be removed or tilted all the way back to have just barely enough clearance for the hood to connect. The manual actually suggests removing it but there is just barely enough clearance to not have to. Near the end of the video when I do the switch over, the position I had it in is where you need to move it to.

I have had this same unit for about 6 months. You can tilt the fence and loosen the 4 wing nuts to slide it down and mostly out of the way. The dust collector will attach on top so you can use the unit, but there is a thumb screw to fasten it to the middle of the table, but you cannot align it with the fence still attached. I have run it that way just fine, but it does reduce the dust collection. If you remove the fence, you can tighten down the thumb screw, but I'm not sure it is worth the hassle of taking the fence on and off every time you switch modes.

Is there a way to adjust the infeed and outfeed tables? I am concerned about the tables moving out of co-planer over time, but I can't tell how this could be restored from any of the videos I've seen on this device. Thanks in advance.

@bearcat2k At 20:20 in the video I flip through the manual pages for the various adjustments that are possible (or at least documented by Grizzly) and this adjustment isn't one that is listed. Pause and you can see the section titles. At 22:41 just blow the outfeed table on an angle there are a couple of threads sticking up with nuts on them. This is located on both sides (front and back) and on both infeed and outfeed. In looking over the unit this appears to be how they are connected to the main body. Now this is only a guess on my part, but I think you could loosen these nuts and perhaps shift it a bit one way or another or perhaps shim under one or both studs to subtlely change the tilt of a table. Since mine is acceptable enough from the factory I haven't had reason to touch these. If it ever gets out of alignment then I might be willing to experiment with these.

Any updates on this unit? Pros, Cons... overall thoughts? Regrets? Would you buy again, if you could go back knowing what you know now, or would you go a different route? Thank you.

You can see my other video on the issues I had with the unit in planer mode about 8 months into ownership but I have to saw Grizzly, eventually, did step up and fully resolve the problems. Pretty sure I got back the same unit so I believe they repaired and didn't replace but whatever they did it runs good now. Given my budget I would by this unit again. Now if I could come up with 4-5K I would definitely go another route but at this price point and for the size of my shop and no 220v I still feel this unit is sitting in a sweet spot. The one remaining "con" which isn't really is the noise level. I forgot to put on my ear protection one day while using it for about 10 minute and my ears were literally ringing for about a half hour afterwards. These are noisy machines and there really isn't anything you can do about that. So always remember the PPE and you should be good.

Wish I hadn't bought the GO940 now! Two heads are better than one right!

Now that you’ve owned it for a few months, would you buy it again, or any regrets about the purchase? I am struggling to find a decent 8 inch or wider jointer that is $1000 to $2000.

As a jointer it's working fine. As I mentioned in the notes the unit was failing in planer mode. After all was said and done I ended up sending it back (on their dime) to Grizzly for repair. I got it back a week later with no communication, no notes if it was fixed or not and at this point it is still a mystery as I have not been able to give it a thorough test yet. I expect to do so and get a new video of this whole experience posted by the end of the year. So, to answer your question fully, check back at the end of the year. But from just the jointer perspective so far it has been a good tool for me. Getting a 12" jointer at this price point really doesn't have any other options that I could find. Would I buy it again for just a jointer function? A definite maybe. Getting a larger floor standing unit might be a better option but the price at least triples. I replaced my old 6" bench top (standard blades) with this unit (12", helical) and from that perspective it is a big jump forward without a major, comparatively, jump in price. I think if it really is fixed then that definitely maybe would shift back to a definite yes as it fits my needs in a price I was able to afford. If the planer mode still has issues and it's relegated to basically just jointer functions then I'd probably lean more towards maybe to no.

Pretty much. Your next step up in a 12" jumps to the mid $3000s and just goes up from there. I did find a "ForrestWest" model for around $1600 but without the helical cutter. After some back and forth with Grizzly where I sent pics and even some videos they are pretty confident in what is wrong and sent me the parts. Hoping to install in the next few days and try again. So far their customer service has been quite good.

How were you treated by Grizzly. I've come to learn that ALL brands can potentially take a dump. Nothing, I don't care who the manufacturer is, is made with quality parts anymore. So, customer service, and warranty are huge in my book. So, I'm very interested in seeing how Grizzly treated you. I'm very seriously considering one of their combos.

I'm still going back and forth with support. I won't say it is adversarial but more collaborative at this point. They have not seen something like this before (as they claim) and it's looking like one of the gears inside has a bent tooth which appears to be causing the issues. Hopefully in a few more days I'll have a more definitive response. So far I can say I'm satisfied with their communications on the issue but as to a possible resolution, that will take a few more days.

@@benchdogstudio Well…I guess its’ good that, they’e communicating well with you. But, my hopes were that they got you a new unit, and sent you an RMA/Box to return the old one. Sounds like they’re trying to isolate the problem and just fix that one part, which I’m not a huge fan of. Simply because, now you’re wondering what else might go bad. Please keep us posted on what they do to resolve this for you. I’m thinking of going with the semi-pro model that’s pushing $4K, but that’s a lot of money to me. So, I won’t do it if they don’t take care of you, whether they’ve “seen this before” or not. As far as I’m concerned, if this is a unique situation, then it’s all the more reason for them to take care of you, and get you a knew unit (assuming that would satisfy you). Thanks for the reply. Depending on how they treat you, I might go with a Rikon who (from what I saw) has 5yr warranties on their machines.

@@phillamoore157 Give the weight and that this comes by truck on a pallet if I can fix it locally I'd actually prefer that over having to find a pallet and box to return it but if they wanted to send me a new one without needing the old one back (or use the new materials to return the old).... I wouldn't object. Either way I'll put more boards through the repair/replace unit to ensure it really is working as expected.

@@phillamoore157 I have the 8" version and the blade guard suddenly stopped closing. It's plastic with a flat spot that the spring pushes against to close it. I called customer support, explained the situation and had replacement parts in about 4 days. I consider that good customer service but now I'm a little sketchy on the plastic. hopefully this was a fluke, or pre- existing crack in the plastic that let go after, maybe 4 hrs of run time. Time will tell but overall I'm impressed with the machine

I have a G0958 and the feed rollers disintegrated after about 4 hours of combined jointer/planer use. Probably feed less than 100 linear feet through the planer. 4 hours of working time for $550. Silly me for trying to save some shop space. On the bright side, you can make a better decision and not buy this product. Back in the day Grizzly used to make good equipment. Based on this product it seems like maybe they no longer do. Which is a real shame.

What did Grizzly say about fix it, assuming still under warranty? I have found their tech support to be pretty responsive although still unknown if my unit is actually fully working or not yet (haven't had time/weather cooperate to give it thorough test yet).

Pretty sure I just got a "bad" one and I don't hold it against them as they did work with me quite a bit to try to resolve the issue without shipping it to them but eventually agreed they need to look at it so paid for it to be sent back. I did do a lot of work with it after getting it back and have had zero issues since. Still a decent tool for the money. If that other viewer just wants to complain and not get it fixed under warranty... well I can't really see any advantage to that approach.

Lots of problems with this video. Looks like you could use some help with program design and videophotography in future video making. Lots of wasted time and showing things the viewer doesn't need to see (like you reading instructions which should have been read before making this video) on this 26-1/2 minute l o n g video. Get to the point! Your presentation could have been made more succinctly in half the time.

Not a bad video really. I enjoyed watching it without the drama and unnecessary graphics, cutaways, etc. Very thorough presentation. All this convinces me that you absolutely cannot do a video any better yourself.
