    Closely held welding secret: tack, tack, tack, tack..... I noticed you like to use straight line movement when welding. I have always used the little circles, not because it is better, but it seems to free up my athritic joints better and I don't get any skipping. I also pick up the tip of the rod on each circle. There's really very little difference between all those welding patterns; zig zag, circles and back and forth. I saw a video where they laid a standard AC rod flat on a piece of steel, but a board on top, turned on the welder and let it burn. It made a beautiful weld. After seeing that, I figured my only addition to the process was to mess it up.

    I totally agree about tacking. Things move a lot if you don't. I need to mess with the torch movements. I used to lift slightly but in a straight line. I don't think the weld was better but maybe it looked a little better.

    Be careful about grinding those tungsten tig rods. Don't breathe any of the dust and always sharpen towards the tip in line with the rod. You can crank that current way down for thin stuff and even down into the bottom of gaps like where a piece of round stock might lay flat on the top of a flat surface and you want to get down to the tangent point in the crack from the side (with the tungsten pulled out from the cup). I watched a top notch journeyman welder (14 on the scale of 1-10) tig weld a broken hinge on a pair of plastic framed glassed once to shut someone up. There are some amazing people out there. My hat's off to all of them, that's you too Mark.

    I've heard the dust is bad, I dont breath it. I've also ground the tungsten lengthwise but not toward the tip. Maybe I need to try that.

    About 18 months ago I switched to a bench grinder with two 8" CBN coated wheels(one medium grit the other fine grit) for grinding HSS tools and I won't ever be going back to conventional grit wheels ever again.....the difference in grinding quality is massive.

    Mark, looking really good and very fortuitous for me. I am working on a grinding table right now. Very interesting idea. One advantage not mentioned with a mandrel is you can simply turn a new mandrel for mixed wheel sizes, much better for balance than bushings. Who knows we may see you try a silicon carbide grinding wheel on the other side. FWIW I've been very pleased with my CBN wheel. Since I got the tangential tool holder my CBN hasn't got as much use, but I need to grind some shaper tools so it's time to get it in commission. Food for thought, I've had a 2" belt sander on the other side of my grinder. Can't be removed real quickly, but has been very handy. Might make a fun project with the tracking, the tensioner, etc. Mine has a round tube out to the idler wheel that contains a compression spring. So very compact.

  • @WinkysWorkshop

    @WinkysWorkshop

    5 ай бұрын

    I have a 2" belt grinder so this one will likely remain two different grit CBN. The table is going to work well I think. The only reason problem is the pivot point can get in the way of what you are grinding. However, in this case what I will be grinding is short and will not be an issue.

  • @ronkellis769

    @ronkellis769

    @@WinkysWorkshop IMHO compromises are in order when you go with a CBN as generally the intent is to use it on HHS tooling. One of those being a wrap around table so the tool is supported when grinding the cutting edge and clearance with the tool supported on either side of the wheel as needed for left or right hand tools. The advantage of the CBN for grinding tooling is the force into the wheel is negligible.There is little danger of deflecting the mandrel/axle with a larger than normal gap between the wheel and the support for a generous table.

  • @WinkysWorkshop
