"I Remember (It's Happening Again)" Lyrics:
My grandpa fought in World War II
My uncle fought in 'Nam
My father was too young
He went to school and met my mom
And her dad always told us stories around dinner time
And there's one he told when I was young that sticks out in my mind
He said ten years after daddy taught me bout the birds and bees
I was stranded in Pearl Harbor fighting off the Japanese
When the kamikaze pilots came and dove in without warning
I was on the Arizona on a warm December morning
(Chorus)
I Remember
When I was a younger man
We were soldiers
Fighting in a foreign land
Now I'm older
And it's happening again
It was hard to have forgiveness for the things they did that day
And our President decided we should make their people pay
So we dropped on Nagasaki and we cut 'em down to size
And the one we dropped on Hiroshima left them vaporized
And I heard some Christian sing, what would Jesus do
What if you were on the wrong side, would he point the gun at you
And they read through every word of Matthew, Mark and Luke and John
So they could see if killing was the side that Christ was on
(Chorus)
And they separate the church and state
And keep God out of school
So our governments can educate
Based upon their rules
But people start to wonder if our politics make sense
When religion is our best excuse for national defense
And when our citizens start saying that our wars are not okay
And Washington keeps telling them God loves the USA
And they teach us history so we can learn from our mistakes
And this generation wants to know how many years it takes
To change the way we treat our neighbors all across the land
Cause if we don't change our hearts we repeat the past again
I Remember
When I was a younger man
We were soldiers
Fighting in a foreign land
Now we're older
And it's happening again
(Instrumental break)
When my grandpa finished talking
We went walking, he and I
I was thinking of the future and how scared I was to die
Now my best friend's overseas in the desert where it's dry
Fighting for our country and I need a reason why
I Remember
When he was a younger man
Now he's a solider
Fighting in a foreign land
Now we're older

I went to high school with Griff. He's the most unlikely "rockstar" ever. Great to see he's living the dream.
This is an amazing song...deserves grammy for its strikin lyrics
CRYING....again.... good grief. I'm at work and I'm all water works.
probably the best war song of the decade
True story. His grandfather was a WW2 vet and fought along side the bravest generation. What a beautiful story. Griffin House is a treasure.
I did not expect this. I listened for the first time... Then i bawled halfway thru... Then i talked to God after that. It was beautiful. Thank you!
Every troubadour must answer a lot of questions. Is the the melody melodic, the poetry poetic, the story meaningful and the singing memorable, Did Griffin achieve all this? I believe the answer is a resounding YES!
i just want to tell that it's one of the best song i have ever really listen
Wow this is pretty darn good. He is from my home town here in Springfield Ohio. He opens the Arts festival tomorrow here in Springfield at an outdoor stage. The place will be packed to gills especially with the weather being what it is this week.
My Grandad was a Royal Marine Commando in WW2 and i'm so proud of him even if he isn't here anymore. I've fought in Afghanistan and the locals i met loved us and supported what we were doing. RIP to all the fallen.
Relevant to the time and place of today! Great lyrics

True, and relevant again now in early 2022 ... history repeating itself to a degree (?)
Griffin House you are one of the best players of singers of our time. Your lyrics and guitar skills are absolutely beautiful.
Was at this guys show last night at the Levitt. He played this one. Never heard of him before. The show was solid and his songwriting was great. A number of great songs played. This one in particular stood out. He mentioned the youtube vid so here i am! Great song. Even better live! Good luck to Griffin House!
I almost cried when he played this in concert! :')
Perhaps the most beautiful video and truthful song I've ever witnessed. Ever.
I saw griffin sing this live...he's just as amazing!
Wonderful and thoughtful song...I saw this on cmt then had to look it up. Thank you to all who have served this country....we can post here and live free because of you. Thank you.
i love this song so much it has a great meaning
Coming to Springfield can’t wait 👍
I just found out that my brother is headed to Iraq for a year. This song sums up exactly how I feel. Thank you.

Sadly there would always be a war and a reason to fight
I like the footage of modern warfare converted to 1940's film quality. It really helps the comparison.
What an amazing song. I cried lol
I don't even like country, but these lyrics have so much meaning :3
I totally agree with you miss stephanie. He is so much better live. I'd only heard one song by him when i went to the concert, and this song gave me chill bumps. he even got choked up at the end. it was all i could do to keep from crying.
this video is excellent. I love you George. lisa
Great song. Thank you for having it here.
I hear Cash and many other new tones. Nice song.
LOVED this song. Thank you.
A few notes: He does mention Viet Nam in the song, along with WWII, and our current wars in the Mideast; I heard him live in Chicago the other night and he is a terrific storyteller; that really is his grandfather in the video who did serve in WWII; regardless of what you believe about religion, anyone who thinks religion hasn't played a role in many wars throughout history has not learned from history and maybe that's why 'It's Happening Again'.

+Maples01 That's super offensive dude. Before you go insulting someone else's religion, why don't you learn about it first. The Islamic holy text (I don't know how to spell it) does not preach violence against anyone. It's the radicalists who interpret it the wrong way

+Nick Humble You're hilarious, totally ignorant of the koran and whats in it! Qur’an 9:7-9-Don’t make treaties with non-Muslims. They are all evildoers and should not be trusted. I interpret that they they "the radicals," are the only ones speaking the truth about it, the other lie in order to invade your country, as it says any means possible, lies are accepted! Take your liberal ass elsewhere!

+Nick Humble Qur’an 9:12-14-Fight the disbelievers! Allah is on your side; he will give you victory. Qur’an 2:191-2-Kill disbelievers wherever you find them. If they attack you, then kill them. Such is the reward of disbelievers. Qur’an (5:51) - ”O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other; and whoever amongst you takes them for a friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the unjust people.” Qur’an (3:85) - ”And whoever desires a religion other than Islam, it shall not be accepted from him, and in the hereafter he shall be one of the losers.” . Qur’an 9:6-Those who submit and convert to Islam will be treated well. (Those who don’t submit will be killed.

+Maples01 thank you for letting me know dude. I feel really dumb, but I'm stoked you responded to actually call me out! Thank you again!
great tune and great disc too
love this music!!
Good questions! Thanks for verbalizing them without being hateful toward any one group/person and being patriotic at the same time.
This was a free song in iTunes back in the day
beautiful music, but a beautiful singer who had come to my player list
Really great song.
Great video and song Griffin House. Thanks for sharing this with me.
Love the song and love the video. Saw him in Boston last year, and I like his new material more than his older stuff. I hope that means the best is yet to come.
Loved it!
Just awesome
this video made me cry and I'm a 52 year old grown man.
"They ... " The soldiers? Or Griffin House? Either way, "they" both did. In WWII, though there are always US soldiers in GB ... Griffin House was there with Jane Siberry in 2006, because that's when I met him and learned of his music ... and he's such a genuine, decent guy actually. Really really nice. And his pianist is MOST amazing.
seen G.H. in Boston came out with just a white tee shirt regular joe he was very good
Excellent video. Great lyrics.
I love this song sooooooo much
i totally agree!
most certainly a fitting song for remembrance day! lest we forget
I wish they would come to england
all thumbs should be up for this!

sbosco10 i just heard it now. Bawled my eyes out! You can know it's a good song by the way it affects you. You can know a great song by the way it moves you...toward improvement, cleaner thoughts and deeds or a closer relationship. This is a great song 💕
semper fi, love the song
nice song
Awesome!
He was at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in 2016. Put on an excellent show. This and songs about relationships rang true. A number of people around me were singing them. Go see him.
Well said.
I don't think you guys get what this song is about. It doesn't agree with the war, but that's not what the song is really about. It's about the question "Is it right?" not "It is wrong" and the desire for a friend not to be in danger in vain. At least that's my take.
I have always thought the same thing about him sounding like Johnny Cash. Never noticed the similarity to Bono though :)

Hell, I never noticed the similarity to Cash but now it’s all I hear!
yeah i saw him open for the cranberries in Milwaukee and thought this song was awesome. he rocks. i never heard of him either before that lol
A song with a message! Finally! I got tired of the superficial crap.
I know griffin house my dad was there when he was born his dad brian house is my dads best friend
Many do because these ones are localized as they tend to just stay around in their own country (with a little spillover) Where as US is fighting in countries half way around the world from themself.
my sister went to that concert also... she goes to cofc
@MrTylerjb i don't know...but i hope he comes back...recently found him..would love to catch a live performance..
OMG this song gave me the chills. We must schange the EMPIRE we have become, back to that of the Founder's vision, a humble foreign policy, Commerce with all, alliances with none.
💖💖💖💖💖
Does anyone know what the name of the war film set during the video?
It's happening again
Ive lost too many friends and family to war, ww2, nam, korea, and irap, i respect and take my hat off to those who served in any branch, and any war. God bless

Powerful. Shades of Deja Vu by John Fogarty. Will have to look into your music Griffin.
ahha yea i was. do you go to cofc??
This song is painful
Pretty fucking epic song
To borrow another Griffin House lyric, "you can't see the forest when you're there among the trees." The song doesn't need to be historically accurate to be effective.
Wow, thats all i gotta say.
first time i heard this song it reminded me "with god on our side" by Dylan. great song

@boxerjeep I know Right!
Through violence you murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate.... Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
I remember going to see griffin house at the duck room with my kids and this reminded me of Steve because I was always interested in all he had done in his life, he told me stories of his fears and his fun he had with his buddies in Korea. and it is happening again thanks to our governments , what a waste of young men and women and even dogs. The world has gone crazy and it is all for power and greed.

I fucking love you, Pandora.
This song is what's up. He sounds like Bono but the lyrics sound like a Johnny cash song..
@thejoolien ...its his year, its gotta be. i have seen a lot of troops starting to support paul cause all they wanna do is come home at this point, its been to damn long.
Whatever happened to griffin house?
he opened for cranberries in baltimore, thats how i heard this song
rip gog
Truthfully, still one of the best songs ever. It’s sad how it remains entirely relevant after all these years. (released during the term of the last republican President). Truthfully, this song makes me cry for our country, for our (now) elderly vets who defended our country back then and have tried to warn us, for our vets now who are tossed away like they mean nothing, for our neighbors being murdered by those supposed to serve. It makes me take a damn hard look at Christianity and its supposed views. It is a song everyone should listen to.
I'd be interested in seeing the poll of the 6.7 billion people currently residing on this planet that has a majority considering the US the biggest threat to legitimate democracy (as opposed to Iran, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Venezuela, North Korea...).
And, now, we can add Iraq, Libya, and Afghanistan.... Only the MIC ever wins.
nice.. sorta sounds like johnny cash on guitar and bono from u2 singing.
in this song he reminds me on johnny cash...
Is this country?

lyrics op
When you are in Afghanistan and you ask the locals how they like america and their answer is "Everything was better when Taliban was in control" makes you stop and really think about what the fuck we are doing.
I hear a Simon and Garfunkel influence.
reminds me a lot of cash, johnny cash
your family is friends with your family??? lol :)
Great Song! If you were touched by this you may be a Ron Paul supporter. If not, check him out because we veterans don't want to keep dying for the sake of privatizing oil .. Ron Paul 2012!
