F tier. Detonating Gale will kill all your party members. Unless you do it to skip the very last encounter, in which case it will win you the game.

Boo is the #1 throwable.
Remember that Druid's Halo of Spores (Circle of Spores) can pop grenades using only a reaction :-). Thanks for the video - love the content as always.

Oh! Thanks for the reminder
I will now take this guide and once again forget about the runepowder bomb I took and leave it in karlach’s inventory.
Fantastic list . . . BG3 has so many things that can be thrown as 'grenades' that I feel like this is only half the story. Additional Grenade items include: Fireworks: (Popdrakes, Squidjins, and Wogglims) Barrels: (Water, Smokepowder Oil, Brine, Acid, and Firewine) Poisons: Virtually all the weapon coating poisons can also be throw to create AOE cloud effects. These can be super effective and I suspect most players don't realize they can throw them. Additional Special Grenades: (Orthon Explosives, Orthonic Handbombs, Flammable Slime Bombs, Poisonous Slime Bombs) Explosive Satchels: (Smokepowder Satchel, Surprise Teddy Bears!, Runepowder Vials) And three uniques that I feel are worth a mention: Brilliant Retort - a Runepowder bomb that triggers twice Runepowder Vial and Barrel which are both so destructive over such a huge AOE that they have been the death of many parties!

Thanks! for this!! I had no idea about thrown poisons. And I thought that the Brilliant Retort does nothing extra. What does it mean that the Brilliant Retort "detonates twice"? I think Ceph mentioned as a bug that any Smokepowder bomb can explode more than once if it is damaged more than once at the same time. Is that the same thing, or you mean something else?
@trengilly01

@@doloresabernathy9809 Brilliant Retort is supposed to explode twice, that's what the 'brilliant retort' is. I don't know if its also subject to the same smokepowder bomb bug . . . if so I expect it could fire twice every time its triggered.
@Zero_Zone.

Karabasan's Gift is also missing.
I think it is worth mentioning that these grenades reveal invisible enemies in the annoying fights where they are present. They usually don’t move much after they go down invisible and an alchemist fire to break up invisible isn’t a bad action use.
@joeracer302
Ай бұрын
Cast create water is a great way to do it also, has pretty big AOE, and will reveal invisible enemies.
Backpack is the strongest throwable since you can stuff it with any number of grenades (if they aren't stacked in the inventory slots) and set them off all at once with something like a Chromatic Orb (fire). Used a backpack bomb stuffed with all the damaging throwables I had to nuke the Apostle of Myrkul in 1turn in my Honor run. 1. Throw Backpack at the Apostle's feet 2. Misty Step to a Necromite 3. Smack Necromite with a Divine Smite to one-hit kill it 4. Use Bloodlust Action to cast Chromatic Orb (Fire) from a scroll on the backpack to destroy it and set off all the explosives, killing the Apostle of Myrkul

I think my next character is gonna be a consumable only character and this tier list along with the potion tier list is definitely gonna be useful. I didn't realize that the Berserker's prone on throw effect also worked on grenades but I guess it makes sense since its the same as any other throw attack. Great video as always!
this series has been making me see sooo many more opportunities, tysm for this!
2:53 if you do it badly enough, any grenade you throw can fit this description
I feel like the combo between throwing items and mage hand is important to remember. You can drop basically all these from your inventory without any action cost and have a mage hand use it's throwing action. A party member using an Action to throw an Acid Vial is mediocre, I agree with you. Having a mage hand do it suddenly changes everything. Some consider this strategy cheesy (for good reason), but it's in the game so anyone can use it if they want.

"Cheesy" in a single player game really has no meaning. It's just people policing how other people are having fun, and getting mad when it doesn't line up with what they'd do.
Alchemists Fire is my favorite way to reveal invisible enemies

Gotta make sure everyone's paying attention!
Coatings, Arrows, and Barrels tier-list when?! Lol, good list overall. Let's not forget the other S-Tier benefit of water, washing the blood off your characters before entering into dialogue!
Haste Spores - the only thing to be careful with is that enemies entering the cloud can also get hasted. Need to make sure you only use them where your party can access them.
Neat, I was hoping for this one after the last two consumables videos. Weapon coatings next I hope?
I would have also mentioned the utility of smokepowder bombs for dealing with doors, walls, and such with Medium Toughness which might not be immediately obvious to more casual players
You forgot to menion Concussion Grenades, which while is somewhat hard to obtain, is technically farmable and is a significant enough effect even if you only grab the ones that appear without farming
Hi. Great content! I have to say, you are my favorite BG3 KZreadr. I would like to ask you for another tier list. Could you make a tier list with all the 6th-level spells, including spells you can upcast? For example, compare Globe of Invulnerability and Arcane Gate to upcast versions of Control, Magic Missiles, Hold Person, Fireball, etc. Thanks and great job again. Looking forward to your next video!
Thanks for opening my eyes to the use of them
the surface from caustic bulb is permanent. So there are often chances that you can toss it in from stealth and without combat just keep beating down unalerted bad guys. Things like the spider queen will just sit on it and can potentially die. I also have fun tossing them off the upper floor of the moonrise tower down onto the patrolling bad guys below. granted they will eventually heal, but its constantly harassing them, and if you jump in after its done a bit, you can lead the battle with an advantage.
Satchel bombs are my favorite part of BG3.
Thank you! I've never actually used any throwables. Now I just need one for Illithid powers.
Thanks for this list..coatings next, please!
"Cough!" "Cough!" Runepowder...
Another thing I like with the smokepowder bomb is that when an enemy is low on HP even in later game it can be a handy coup de grace when you've otherwise got a miss chance.
One thing about the Caustic Bulb is that brine surfaces explode when ignited (doing 2d6 if I'm not mistaken, with no save, so free), and has a pretty usefull push effect (again with no save dc), and leaves a nice flamming area, so enemies moving around will get burned too. I use it on the Nautiloid to force the cambions to reposition, specially Zhalk, before stealing his flaming sword (he always ignites it and both him and the mindflayer blow towards the center of the room, where you want them). :D For me, the Caustinc Bulb is definately A tier, for the whole Act 1. :)
Even 1 guaranteed damage is nice for removing Unstoppable stacks in an AoE in the late game. Spiked Bulbs, Void Bulbs, and Alchemist’s Fire are all excellent at this.
I always learn from Ceph's videos, no matter how many hours I have played. Here I learned these three (among other tidbits): There is a difference between Haste Spoor Grenades and the Haste Spoor Flask. Terazul is useful and stacks with Potion of Speed. The Brilliant Retort is better than the normal Smokepowder Bomb (learned from comments).
I imagine if you use the drop item + use mage hand to throw combo, everything just goes up a tier. Probably not worth to think about cause more actions is better, but it’s a combo I’m biased towards. Great stuff as always!
Caustic bulb surfaces can break other potions/items for action free effects. Combines very well with void bulbs where you can just drop it on the surface from inventory for infinite free AoE pull
Need a video on effects like wrath and heat
Arrows tier list next plz!
Great list! I’m curious whether you have experimented with various packages of grenades (backpacks, crates, etc) and have any tips when building those gift packs of death
How do you do it every time ceph? I thought for sure after the potions tierlist, this man is done. How about a weapon actions and unique weapon actions tierlist next?
I got a good use out of the hearthlight bomb, but ironically Gale didn't have dancing lights. He used the mentioned bomb to reveal a shadow that was about to try to destroy him.
I love acid vials, If you throw them with mage hand the opportunity cost are very low, so when I have a low hit chance I like throwing it at enemies.

@@gametangia yeah I’d say its up there with minor illusion and guidance. Really hard to pick between either of the three cause they’re all so damn good. I do think minor illusion has the highest potential because it really just groups up all enemies in one spot for a massacre, but I’d say mage hand is the most versatile and guidance is of course probably going to see the most use out of all of them so it’s the most consistent in that regard.
hitting wet people with arsonists oil also makes them weak to fire damage
is the orthonic explosive not a grenade?
My problem with the spiked bulbs is even if they are a consistent way to inflict bleeding, a lot of the synergies with bleeding can be done in other ways with less setup. (Yes I am including the full party synergy you can get, bc advantage can be gotten in other ways)
"There are no grenades that are actively harmful to you" is a fucking hilarious line out of context
Seems to be some audio issues with this one
If you throw any of these with the enraged throw you also get to knock enemies prone, so that enhances the efficiency even further :) The sleeping potion can be thrown on venders to have an easier time pickpocketing them and not getting caught ;)
I got 2 haste grenades from the mycoid quest in honour mode, not sure if flasks exist in honour
Water is OP, love it and it’s one of the few pots I use consistently.

I also use Water Barrels . . . same effect but a much bigger AOE!
Might have missed one, depends on criteria. I know it's mainly a Coating but, I think, Oil of Freezing can also be thrown as a Grenade. It inflicts Encrusted with Frost, so you need a Cold set but if you do, it's REALLY good. As for the list, thank you I just found Heartlight Bombs are a thing. Nevermind trenglily01 in the comments is absolutely right.
Arrows and throwable items are so cool in BG3. Shame they are not a thing in base tabletop dnd. That's why martials suck so much starting from nearly a ~7 lvl.
curious about orthinic handbombs, orthon explosive, and concussion grenades. can you still pick up the handbombs and concussion grenades? those were the only grenades I really used because of how wild they are

Does the Brilliant Retort etc. Not count as a grenade?
I accidentally 1 shot the nether brain on my first playthrough by dropping 12 smoke powder bombs beside it and blowing them up. 😂
Please tell me you plan to finish out the video set by doing oils and coatings. If there's one thing that annoys me in BG3, it's that a lot of the descriptions don't actually give you a basic description of what it does, just flavor text. At least that's how it is in the alchemy window, which really makes it hard to decide what to spend resources crafting. IT would be nice to see that breakdown to round out the series, please!
most i used is a bit of water here and there in act 1 and a it in 2... i wonder if im missing out
Too bad you can't stack floor effects, but I guess they learned their lesson from BG1 and BG2 where the math on stacking 7+ webs got extremely brutal for anything that wasn't outright immune.
Isn't the downside to haste spores that enemy creatures can also gain the effect?
Please rank illithid powers next
Are you going to be doing a vid on weapon coatings?

I decided to go from balanced with a ton of save scumming straight to honour mode for my second playthrough. On nere, accidentally pulled everyone when I tagged one of the Duergar while blowing up the wall, and then threw a grenade that doesn't explode on impact mid fight, which promptly got thrown back at me -__-
just realized, there is no smoke powder satchel here.
Nice, now only coating and barrels are left Wonder how you would rate them
@trengilly01

I've always considered Barrels as Grenades already since you can use them the same way. And you can also throw all the different Poison Coatings to make AOE bombs!
what about the skull grenades that you can get from dammon for giving him three of the cursed mask??
@chauncyriggsby9997
Ай бұрын
they are listed as Orthon Explosive's you can only get them from devilfoil mask they provide 3d6 fire on throw plus 1d4 fire on turn, plus thunder damage + knock back
Where are all the fireworks? In HM I stuff all the fireworks and smokepowder bombs I hoard into a container, hurl container near final fight (the one with the 5 turn timer and annoying mechanics) and detonate, guarantees a win
No brilliant retort?

Holy water is an absolute scam. I figured it'd work on Mizora as she is stated to be a fiend to keep her away from the camp for good. Just throw one where she stands and she disappears every turn due to taking damage, also it's not a danger to scratch/the owl bear cub. However, for some fucking reason it doesn't work on Mizora.

I'm not 100% sure what you're confused about, but it's definitely something! Grenades are an excellent action if you have no relevant spell or are trying to conserve spell slots
@Jamisen22
Ай бұрын
You said: "Often times your spellcaster doesn't have a good default offensive option" - if this is the case, you've built poorly. Cantrips scale really well in this game, so you should always have a good spell attack, regardless of spell slots (or scrolls are EVERYWHERE). I'm not saying it's never useful to have them throw a grenade, but it should in no way be a default attack. Plus throw distance scales with strength, so you should be leaning way more on your physically beefy characters to be launching grenades.

ACT 2 SPOILER WARNING. Barcus Wroot spends many days working on his "Brilliant Retort" and he thinks its a great invention, but it seems like it is exactly the same as every other Smokepowder Bomb that you can have in abundance by then. That is what I thought until I read a comment on this video and then read the wiki (Note to self: read the wiki). The tooltip in game omits important information. I think that is a deliberate deception of the player into thinking Barcus is deluded or a liar, when he actually has a hidden power or truth. It is part of a very cleverly written portrayal of a complex character. Is he an archetypical "wise fool," or a liar with a heart of gold? Is he a childhood friend with a sublimated sexual crush on a same-sex friend? Is he meant to depict someone with autistic spectrum disorder? He is funny, deluded, awkward, and sad. But he is in many ways superior to his "superiors"... I won't say more to avoid more spoilers.
