When I saw the small image of the landscape, I thought it was from the 18th century. But, oh my goodness, it's a contemporary landscape! Beautiful! And I love the way you work!! Thank you.

I think it's the dark transparent color that makes this painting work so well. The technique allows for effortless abundant texture. It's actually more like drawing. Look at the way all those chicken scratches from the brush and paper towel create middle values as a whole but give the visual cortex something to do, unlike a photo with smooth gradients everywhere. I can't imagine a better way to excite painters just starting out, especially if they have drawing skills. I've seen George Inness work in 5 museums now and they are the best example of paintings having so much more impact in person. And none of them were large. They were so much about mood, atmosphere and nature. (Winslow Homer was a great artist but seeing his work in person I would not say he's a master.)

I enjoy watching you just before I fall asleep- the music is so relaxing and your gentle spoken voice, soothing and warm. When I close my eyes, I imagine painting like you do. This experience gently takes me fading away into dreamland as I hold a paintbrush in my hand. Thank you Stuart Davies for your wonderful inspiration! 🎨 🖌 ✨

It's brilliant Stuart, as is the commentary. From watching your videos, I am learning technique, illusion and layout of course, but what makes your content so much more valuable is that you let us into your head. The mind of the artist, and yes Stuart you are an artist, not just a painter as are so many other contributors. I love that you have no concept of the finished painting other than that it will probably be a landscape because that's what you do. Grab a big brush and see what appears. Your mind's freedom is your gift to us, thank you.

Very dreamlike painting process and the first layer looked so beautifull when you wiped away - everything had the same tonal quality and at the same time all the contrast that make the Lights sing and the dark shadows vibrate the secret life of the wood - together with your choice of music it was like a dreamtravel into a Nature of beauty and peace.

Lifting out is an old technique which you demonstrate with great enthusiasm, Stuart. I watched American artist Dennis Sheehan do this using a green and one red, over 5 years ago. I enjoyed watching it so much that I tried a couple, both for youtube, and although I tend to paint small pictures my approach is similar to yours. Not always though, as there are many ways to begin a painting, and I'm really inspired by your lovely work.
