I had a yellow jacket bee problem. Bees entering from behind baseboards, outlets, and switch boxes. I used blue painters tape and taped off all baseboards, door/window trim, outlets and switches. I left the tape on for over a year (two active bee seasons). 1. The tape held the entire time. 2. The tape come off easily. 3 The tape left no residue, and no damage to painted walls or finish on hard wood flooring.

I work in the film production business. We lay down ram board on the floors and sometimes walls of homes we shoot in for protection. I’ve never had it happen on one of my jobs but others have had “blue” tape pull the finish off wood floors. We slap a heavy door mat on end of of the ram board and then tape the ram board to its self. At least in the US we have many different types of Blue Tape. It looks like Ben has original 3M blue. Which Infind has medium sticky and good release. I’ve been using the 3M blue Edge Lock on some home painting (thx for tips B!) and other projects and it’s definitely stickier and harder to pull off than Original Blue. It’s kept its edge even after getting wet. Very happy with it for controlling edges (as opposed to just general taping). So far has not hurt paint. Also doesn’t seem to “shred tear”’like original Blue, always tears straight. If peeps are interested in some really good tape that is more structural, try some Gaffer’s Tape (www.filmtools.com). Get the good stuff. It’s on a fabric backing and you can tear it into tiny little strips that tear perfectly straight. Comes in all colors which aren’t about sticky it’s about blending in on camera. It’s in a pair of my pants right now fixing a pocket hole that I didn’t want to sew together. Been through at least 10 wash and cycles and haven’t lost a penny yet!

You have been a life saver for me. I have watched so many of your very informative excellent videos, you are a born teacher. Yeah, tape for me needs to come off as soon as the paint is beginning to dry. Have left it on and had to use a heat gun to remove it, otherwise fresh paint has come off with the tape. For the professionals out there. I use to own a sign business and would often be removing old vinyl lettering and they have a product called Rapid Remover that will remove the glue left behind your dated tape applications. It will NOT harm any surface and smells like a orange citrus fruit. You will have to use a glass cleaner to remove the Rapid Remover after finishing.

I had a large project renovating my Sister's house and during his holidays my nephew was at home and he used to practice skating tricks out in the street intersection over and over and over between studying, computer games, piano and drums. Like he'd do an hour each. Rinse and repeat. The skate sound was hypnotic.

I've switched over to blue tape. With green tape, I've had paint bleed under, tear while I'm trying to remove it and even become one with the paint when I lift it off taking some of the wall paint off with it. I use it just to attach clear plastic to stuff but even then, after a day, I'm re-taping because it often has let go. Attaches when you don't want, won't stay attached when you do want it to. Still, cheaper in the last example for that use. But, it also depends on brand. When it first came out, it worked great. they started to make it less tacky so it wasn't pulling paint off but I think they went overboard.

  • @leetdragon

In my experience green tape will bleed paint through if there is the tiniest imperfection on the surface. Even if it doesnt bleed, it does not leave a perfect line like the blue tape does.

Where I live green tape = frog tape, we don't have that cheap green tape. Just beige (cheap), blue (painters), green (frog tape), purple (delicate), and the various specialty tapes that are usually blue with some branding written across. The frog tape is great if you need a mechanically straight line, other than that I just use 3M blue for most purposes.

  • @brianworley7705

I wouldn't classify tape by color, at least not in the United States. Brands make different grade tapes. Green Frogg tape is quite good for delicate surfaces, but then again there are two grades of blue tape I use, similar rating to what you noted. The "standard" tape on is for established surfaces and for up to a week use. The more expesive blue is two weeks or longer and delicate surfaces. It is more pliable and creates a better edge seal, but not as good if the surface isn't pretty clean.

For the few dollars difference, I tend to stick with Frog tape all the time nowadays. (the worst tape I used was some 3M 2020, it was brutal, it would break when not wanted, hard to get a nail under to start without tearing, an all around disaster, and it was pretty "fresh" that I got from SW) If the price difference over a room between using regular versus Frog is 10 bucks, that's the cost of doing business, and less frustration.

In Norway (where I live) stores sell white (similar to your green), yellow (like your blue) - for inside jobs, pink - delicate (can stick directly on paint), blue (outside jobs) and green (for rough surfaces). Quality also varies depending on which store you buy. I guess you also have much more types, but those two are most commonly used.

Other green tapes are between 3 to 4 $. Blue tape is between 5-6 $. Worst tape is made by scotch It’s green but very thin. When you try to remove same or next day it’s very difficult. On glass tape cutting in pieces(very thin, and glue from tape stayed on glass) Lots of work to remove tape. Absolutely useless tape. Better to spend more money on tape or work without the tape. I Like using - The "Yellow" "Frog"- Painters', Multi use Tape"--it has has a 60 day window removal time- The "Green Frog"- Tape is just as expensive and has less "Leave" on time, I think a 21 day window of clean removal time, They also come with a case or "DUST COVER" for there brand of tape, which is very useful after you use the tape up and also keeps the Tape clean and the edge's neat. I like or prefer using The "IPG"/ or "ITERTAPE POLYMER GROUP" "BLUE" for everything else, it's strong -very sticky and the best part it's a very "DARK BLUE" !! compared to the rest of the "BLUE" Tape's available out there, which are a very " LIGHT BLUE" Light blue just doe's not make the job Look Cool and Dark Blue has a more professional appearance/...and now I'm Now Converting over to 3M's "Scotch" brand's 60 day Delicate surface, It has a very cool "Purple-"-"Light Purple" Lavenderlike, Girlie appearance to it but it's very easy on the eye's, when working inside the home. I Like your video's "Vancouver CarPainter", sorry, I meant "Carpenter" inside joke. Thank's for all the tip's/lesson's on how to do it the right way. John W. from "(Red oak's Mill)"- New York.

@@vancouvercarpenter Just happened to me on a recent condo hallway job, ran out of blue and had to settle for the green that Home Hardware sells...it even tore when peeling it off immediately after painting. That's annoying! The blue came off in full continuous non bled through strips.

There's so many kinds of tape on the market. Blue, green, yellow... the old fashioned beige that your grandfather used...

Honestly, are we really arguing that "other tape can be green too"? It's quite clear what he's referring to. Anyone who has ever worked with painter's tapes knows what brands he's holding here. Nobody calls it "painters mate green". It's just green tape. If you're getting upset about that these videos probably aren't for you.

We would only use 3m delicate blue tape when needed. Blue tape is very overrated.
