The undergravel filter is very effective and moves more water (760 gal/hr) than the new FX5 (560 gal/hr) and it gets oxygenated water flowing through the gravel which supports beneficial bacteria growth better than sand. Doing a gravel vac and backflushing under the plates removes enough debris to keep it clean. There were 105 f1 red tropheus juveniles raised for a year in this tank that were traded for the 40 green murago that day so there is no concern about the bio load.

No disrespect taken. I agree and understand your valid concerns about the bio load but the tank was fully cycled at the time and I didn't mention that in the video. To be honest with you I was amazed by how well an undergravel filter works. I thought they would move less water so I did a test and found mine moves more water than a FX5. I traded some fish for a Coralife Superluft air pump and the filter plates were free so it was a really inexpensive and effective addition.

Nice fish for sure but they are really skinny and were not eating long before I got them. They are getting medicated and hope I can get them back on track.

you might want to think about your under gravel filter very out dated. Keeps all the crap in the tank, not in the filters, also you put a lot of fish in at once feed very little or you could kill all of them. big water changes!
