Karvounato is one of the best places for Gyro in Thessaloniki, easily on TOP-3, for me and my wife is number 1 by far. Excellent choice my friend!

@@rogertayloRRR there is a similarity and several differences between gyros and kontosouvli ("short-spike" in english). They are both spit roasted, one vertically (gyros) the other horizontally (kontosouvli). That is where similarities end. Kontosouvli can be pork or chicken, however the original version was pork. Gyros can be pork, can be goat, can be lamb meat or some combination of these (the secrets of the profession). Texture: kontosouvli is usually whole pieces of pork meat that are so well marinated and slowly cooked that you will end up eating the wonder Birmze enjoyed that night.Gyros on the other hand although slowly cooked as well, only experiences heat/cooking on the outer surface of the meat slices stacked on top of each other and spit-roasted. This makes all the fat ooze and drip down as the outer rim gets cooked to brownish colour. They then cut it verticall and you end up eating small 'shavings' of well cooked meat full of delicious fat and herbs. The different cuts and thickness of the cooked meat plays a role in the final texture. Kontosouvli is soft, well cooked perfectly marinated meat, gyros is slightly chewier/dryer meat less well marinated but the cooked fat makes up for that and it also has tremendous flavour. What can I say, they are both excellent and it is up to you to decide what you'd prefer to eat at the moment! Either way you can't miss with these!
