GREEK STREET FOOD in ATHENS, GREECE | Amazing GREEK FOOD
We're in Athens, Greece! In this 4 part series we're exploring Greece's capital city to hunt down the best local food. Today's it's all about Greek street food- we start off breakfast-ing like the locals. Greeks don't sit down to a huge breakfast normally, they're more an eat and run sort of lot. We grab some breakfast staples- a koulouri (a type of bread ring) and a Freddo espresso and Freddo cappuccino. Next up we snack on some fresh fried fish (sand smelt and cod) as we wander around Athens before tucking into some incredible souvlaki from a local's favourite. We finish with galaktoboureko- a mouthwatering pastry made from filo and semolina custard from a bakery that's been around since 1961. What we ate and where we ate it:
Koulouri from the stand outside Syntagma metro station and Freddo Espresso and Freddo Cappucino from KAYA, Voulis 7, Athina 105 62. Open Monday to Friday 7:00am to 6:00pm, Saturday 8:00am to 4:00pm and Sunday 10:00am to 6:00pm.
Fish in cones from Zisis, Athinaidos 3, Athina 105 63. Open daily 12:00pm to midnight.
Kalamakia/ souvlaki at Elvis, Plateon 29, Athina 104 35. Open Monday to Saturday 12:00pm to 1:00am and Sunday 12:00pm t0 2:30am.
Galaktoboureko at ΖΑΧΑΡΟΠΛΑΣΤΕΙΑ ΚΟΣΜΙΚΟΝ ΑΓ.ΝΙΚΟΛΑΟΣ, Leof. Ionias 104, Athina 104 46. Open daily 7:00am to 11:00pm.

@@ChasingaPlate Uncle Joe's Kebabs here in Coburg are great. Small little caravan stall. next to a car-wash. (and major tram stop) Open 7 days a week 6pm-12am. Great food for a great price.
Greece is the king of the food and much more but now lets focus on the food!!👍👌

Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena Come quickly before the war breaks out. Greece is on the brink of war with the neighbours and the people drink freddo cappuccino and "it's the 9th of the month". A typical Greek saying which means, that the people ignore everything that crumble down around them, and they're uninterested.

Hey Sheena and Thomas! You are doing a great job with your Athens food tour! I live in Agios Nikolaos and galaktoboorehko from Kosmikon (the same that you visited) is a must at a family feast! @@ChasingaPlate She is wrong. Probably 90% of coffee drinkers in Greece drink Freddos. Frappe was popular 15 years ago. Before freddo was "invented". Also frappe is one of the worst quality coffee you can find. Greek coffee on the other hand is nice.

Go to Plaka, the Monastiraki to see the colourful flea markets, great food, great Greek live music, at the foot of the world famous Acropolis hill.

Fried smelt is quite popular in a few regions of the U.S. Love them. Once again, Thomas is a sport for saying nice things about that cod..."plain, normal tasting, standard, not in a bad way." 😂 Now that this series is done, do you recall how many gyros you tried before landing on your favorite? Loved all the dishes you highlighted but was hoping for *_pastitcio_* and *_moussaka,_* a couple of my favorite Greek comfort foods. Next time, eh?

😂😂😂😂 From memory it was about 5-6 gyros. We couldn’t get over the difference in taste. The average ones were completely one dimensional in flavour. Good for filling your tummy but not fulfilling the taste factor. You know what? I tried so hard to find a really good moussaka and pastitcio to film but to no avail- next time we’ll spend more time on the ground eating so we can include them! I wonder if winter time would be better for those dishes too? In any case- it’s great to have new dishes to include in a future series 😄 Cheers, Sheena

5-6 gyros? Excellent. When something is that iconic and universally praised, it's worth the effort. A former coworker said New York pizza was awful. I asked if he remembered the resto. It was a "dollar slice" joint near his hotel. Just so you know "dollar slice" is very famous but it takes a lot of research to find the good ones. NYC pizza is found on just about any corner and with a little effort the top 25 pizzerias are easily identified. So yes, comparing a few versions is the way to go...to a certain extent. After research I found out that a tripe soup was the national dish of a country I was about to visit. I tried it twice...had to give up. 😳😂

Oh gosh- that's the worst- when people judge a dish by the first one they've stumbled across and put zero effort into finding a good one. It frustrates the hell outta me!!! Hahahaah tripe soup. It's very popular here in Turkey too so will have to give it a try!
Its better to go eat and in other areas of athens not only in center..Locals dont go to center at all :p For example glyfada have many good restaurants to eat and the area is very beautiful..Also you have to visit lake of vouliagmeni,its stunning! You guys are doing a great job. I am from Crete but live in Thessaloniki (Salonica). Next time you visit Greece you can travel either North (Salonica) or South (Crete). if you still in greece or decide to come and visit us again, i have 2 places to suggest you to go , 1st is the "Cap-Cap" it is a nice theme pastry that has unique desserts and themed with seasons like christmas halloween harry potter etc. and it is located near the metro aigaleo 3-4 minutes by foot, search for some pics on web to see for yourself, 2nd is the "arch beer" one of the oldest and best beer shop ever in athens with a catalogue- bible with beers from all over the world, its almost impossible to find an empty table to sit there and it is located near the metro anthoupoli 7-8 minutes walking. good job amazing work and amazing scenes, keep up the good work!!
