Greek Street Food Tour in Athens, Greece Travel Video Transcript:
Today's plan is to sample all the Greek Street Food. We have come to Athens Flea Market and I know this seems like a bit of a strange place to be having street food but they have a lot of little stands and shops where you can get souvlaki, gyros, baklava. We're just planning to walk down the main road of the flea market and just peruse have a look around and see what we can sniff out and have a fantastic meal on the street. And if you're interested in recreating this little food tour that we're about to embark on the closest metro station is Monastiraki so there you go. Let's go eat.
Now it is time for food. We ordered the Gyro and Souvlaki. Both of them in pitas. The meat is so juicy. Is it? Juicy and tender and it is like soaking the bread with its meaty juiciness. And then all of the freshness of the vegetables right? And the price was also wonderful. They were 2 Euros each.
We have moved on to a little something sweet now. It didn't take us long let me tell you. Well we got Greek Yogurt. And this is not just any Greek yogurt. This is this comes with some amazing toppings. Yes. It has got a super saturated amount of honey. It has walnuts and we also ordered dates as well.
We found a man who was selling nuts. Yes. And he was very friendly and animated. He was so friendly and passionate and also very generous allowing us to sample them.He let us try the nuts before we bought them. What a nice guy. We ended up getting a sweet one and a salty one. And then because we bought two packs he gave me a whole bunch extra in my hand. He was just like open your palm and he put a whole bunch of nuts.
Exciting moment over here. Trying my first Greek coffee. I somehow didn't manage to try Greek coffee the first time I was in Greece. I don't think I was drinking a lot of coffee a few years ago. No.
That is the only thing I can think of. We've found a cute little cafe here in the heart of the flea market so we thought let's sit down for a quick drink.
That is potent. Yeah, strong coffee? Potent, rich, strong.
Baklava. Better believe it. We've been having a lot of this here in Athens. Look at all of that syrup just oozing out. That honey.
Last but not least. We found some bread. It is reminiscent of a pretzel I would say. Apparently this is called Koulouri.
The lady said this was the most traditional of the ones that she was serving. It is a ring shaped piece of bread covered in toasted sesame seeds.
That concludes our Greek Street Food Tour here in Athens, Greece. We ate so many delicious street food items. And we'd love to know what are some other Greek street food items that you can try. We obviously didn't try them all just a very small component of them. Everything was really good and that was just a lot of fun. Ciao from Athens, Greece.
This is part of our Travel in Greece video series showcasing Greek food, Greek culture and Greek cuisine.

The nine strips come from the nine syllables phrase, that Greek said at the revolution of 1821. The phrase is "Ελευθερία ή Θάνατος" which means "Freedom or Death". The white cross stands for Christianity. About the colors there are some different versions of what they mean. Τhe predominant is that stand for the colors of Greek sea and sky.

@@giannismakridakis4807 Many people think, Neo Greeks included that the cross stands for Christianity but the actual “ historic” truth is that the cross is an Ancient Greek symbol called “ karos “ which is found on many Ancient Greek artifacts. If we omit the letter “a” we get the English word that evolved into “ cross “ from Karos. Christianity borrowed many things.

It deeply impresses all Greeks that you were impressed by the guy who let you try the nuts before you decided what to choose. That's a common thing here, and I've always wondered why you don't " copy" the things and manners you like. While in the USA, a long journey years ago, I was, as well, impressed by the mentality of people , everywhere, who offered nothing. In greek, this is called " philoxenia ". It means, treating and welcoming the strangers in all ways. One won't become " poorer" if they offer little things that make a big difference. Greetings from Athens, Greece 🇬🇷

Great video guys, miss my beloved city of Athens. So next time you are in Athens center go to STANI for traditional Greek yogurt this place has been there since the 1930s. Best Greek yogurt with honey and nuts, also they serve cream of the yogurt (not as sour, slightly sweet) with honey. And of course KRINOS for the best loukoumades in Athens, it has been there since the 1920s. Next time try the gyro with everything on it including french fries, you will love it!!!!

I am just so confused about how to pronounce Gyro. I grew up pronouncing it as it's spelled, and then I went to a Greek restaurant and they told me it was Hyro (like hero), but you pronounce it Yyro (like year oh)...I'm just so confused. But however you pronounce it, I love Gyros! It's one of my favorite foods! And that Greek coffee looks heavenly! Every one of your videos makes me so hungry!

    Yyro is the correct term

  • @chm5750

    @chm5750

    5 жыл бұрын

It is pronounced Yyro, or Yero, which means round, but calling it Gyro is also correct. Yyro, or Gyro means round, or turning around. Ιn Greek it is written as Γγρο, the letter gama Γ γ is the English equivalent (latin alphabet), of the letter G. Greek words, usually in science, and medicine are translated in English, to the latin letter equivalent. Therefore, Yyro is Gyro, like in Gyroscope - Γυροσκοπιο. Hope that clears it up.

@@samuelandaudrey Well, as you're aware, Greece and it's climate, people and scenery are second to none. I could rant on for days. I went with Greeks, from Halifax, and stayed with their families and lived a kingly life while I was there. I wouldn't describe it as living there as much as it was simply a full summer vacation; I was only 15 a the time. In two months, you can do just about everything...even get arrested for hitchhiking...yep...while on Anafi we got picked up by one of those Volkswagen van pick truck things and were quickly apprehended, spent two hours in a large jailcell while I watched my Greek team verbally spar with the Greek police. In the end they let us go back into the pick up. Weird??! Yes...the Spartans were sparring and not sparing very sporty language. Peace....

snowywinter9 souvlaki is the same as shush kabob. It’s chucks of meat on a screwed and bbq’d. Gyros / Donar is a process (not processed) of adding spices to different meat (traditionally its lamb) and layered on a huge screwer and slowly cooked on a spit that turns. It’s than carved into thin slices. Neither should be dry but if it’s cover cooked it will be dry. That goes for both.
