This song brings back happy memories for me ! I used to go to this club in one of Manchester’s back streets in the late 1980’s early 1990’s called The Continental Club (affectionately known as the Conti club. Throughout the week music was provided by the jukebox only and on Saturday nights they had a DJ. This place was Greek owned and one night they played the Zorba Dance. There were lots of us dancing it, holding hands but me being the young energetic dancer that I was, towards the end where it started to go faster, I ended up in the middle of everyone, doing the dance by myself, getting faster and faster whilst everyone else clapped and cheered me on. The Greek staff asked me where I had learned the dance and I told them ‘Here, tonight !’ They were awestruck and I got quite a few drinks bought me that night and subsequent nights thereafter. Despite being a large guy, I am tall so I can carry my weight pretty well. I didn’t let it stop me enjoying myself and was usually the first person to get up and dance, which gave the others the courage to do the same and therefore making the club popular. I couldn’t do the dance today because I’m riddled with Osteoarthritis and Fibromyalgia!

This is why traditional folk culture is important and should be nourished and encouraged! It made me happy and sad simultaneously to see this wonderful display of Greek dancing. I learnt Greek dancing while at University from a friend and it is a wonderful art form. Watching this video brought back memories of that time and also of Anthony Quinn dancing in Zorba the Greek, the movie. Thank you for this video which reminds us to live in the moment and experience joy where it is to be found whether in travelling, dancing, eating or being with loved ones.

Сколько раз смотрю это видео , каждый раз душа радуется. Сиртаки танец моей юности. В Ташкенте у нас жили переселенные греки, коммунисты, их вывезли при Сталине и всюду звучала их музыка. Жили дружно, умели петь их песни и танцевали Сиртаки. Музыка Микиса Теодоракиса. Потом они в семидесятые годы, почти все вернулись в Грецию.

Music and dance of all cultures bring so much uplifting joy and togetherness, it is a treasure we behold!

This song brings back happy memories for me ! I used to go to this club in one of Manchester’s back streets in the late 1980’s early 1990’s called The Continental Club (affectionately known as the Conti club. Throughout the week music was provided by the jukebox only and on Saturday nights they had a DJ. This place was Greek owned and one night they played the Zorba Dance. There were lots of us dancing it, holding hands but me being the young energetic dancer that I was, towards the end where it started to go faster, I ended up in the middle of everyone, doing the dance by myself, getting faster and faster whilst everyone else clapped and cheered me on. The Greek staff asked me where I had learned the dance and I told them ‘Here, tonight !’ They were awestruck and I got quite a few drinks bought me that night and subsequent nights thereafter. Despite being a large guy, I am tall so I can carry my weight pretty well. I didn’t let it stop me enjoying myself and was usually the first person to get up and dance, which gave the others the courage to do the same and therefore making the club popular. I couldn’t do the dance today because I’m riddled with Osteoarthritis and Fibromyalgia!

Oddly enough (and I'm half aging myself) I learned of this song though mom's Herb Albert album. I was telling my son about it and started scrolling. For 7 minutes, I was transported to Greece via Canada. I so enjoyed watching this!

This is why traditional folk culture is important and should be nourished and encouraged! It made me happy and sad simultaneously to see this wonderful display of Greek dancing. I learnt Greek dancing while at University from a friend and it is a wonderful art form. Watching this video brought back memories of that time and also of Anthony Quinn dancing in Zorba the Greek, the movie. Thank you for this video which reminds us to live in the moment and experience joy where it is to be found whether in travelling, dancing, eating or being with loved ones.

Сколько раз смотрю это видео , каждый раз душа радуется. Сиртаки танец моей юности. В Ташкенте у нас жили переселенные греки, коммунисты, их вывезли при Сталине и всюду звучала их музыка. Жили дружно, умели петь их песни и танцевали Сиртаки. Музыка Микиса Теодоракиса. Потом они в семидесятые годы, почти все вернулись в Грецию.
