Carried my Granda's coffin with Willie John McBride 8 years ago. By all accounts the man's still a workhorse to this day well into his 80's.

Need to change title Max, Greatest FIVE AND SIX Nations team, for me greatest player of all time J P R Williams and some more of the 1970s Greatest ever team Wales should have made it. Farrell should be respected but greatest 5/6 Nations number 10 of all time, no way

I think this is an impossible ask, so many great players left out, one in particular for me is mike Gibson ,he was way ahead of his time and was admired by all, if you get a chance to see some old footage you will see what I mean. I do like your bravery though, keep it coming Max.

I understand, there were a lot of great French players, also its got too be hard for you to pick players you've never seen play, plus amateur v professional you really now need to pick a second team so they will have someone to play against.

Some interesting players chosen but be honest Stuart Hogg isn't Scotlands best full back so shouldn't be the 6N full back. Andy Irvine, Gavin Hastings or Serge Blanco should have been in at full back

    1. Hogg 2. Hastings 3. Irvine 4. Kinghorn If we’re discussing all-time lists for Scotland at fullback, had Hastings in a version of this list from a few years back.

There are so many I could take issue with in the 23, but Stuart Hogg at 15 ahead of JPR? No Mike Gibson? He could play across the backline, and regularly considered as one of the true greats. Mako ahead of Sheridan, Tom Smith, Castrogiovani? Fun bus leonard would be on the bench as could cover both sides. Adam jones is the best tighthead I've seen in 6 nations by a mile. I shouldnt go any further because the locks/back row is subjective depending on nationality, but to not have Richard Hill at least in the 23 is a travesty.

Richard Hill and Martin Johnson should be in the team although that could be my English bias. Johnson won five 5/6 nations titles including 2 grand slams, captaining the side to 3 of those titles. Captained the lions on 2 tours, and World Cup winning captain. Hill is possibly the most underrated player of all time the bloke was quality.

I don't think there should be players that played pre-2000 in a 6nations team. The types of rugby they play compared to the modern day means that the players can't really be compared.

I wanted to find the perfect balance between the living highlight reels of the professional era, the greats they looked up to as kids and then the pioneers of the amateur era. That way the entire history of the game is properly recognised 🔥

Obviously, this is debatable until the comes come home. Farrell over Wilkinson is a strange one for me, obviously Farrell is a great player. What is the criteria for selection? There are players selected from over 100 years ago or 50 years, it is impossible to judge players from that far back.

Blanco, Hogg, Hastings were probably my top choices for 15. But after Hogg finally got to win some trophies at the end of his career, you do need to look back at how much he changed Scotland’s hopeless attack structure into an expansive side 🔥

@@TheBlackJersey I respect your take tbh but I would have chosen Blanco because he redefined the role of the n°15 jersey in the Northern Hemisphere + he won six 5 Nations titles (2 of them were Grand Slam) in that really dominant french team of the 80's. It's a bit more important than Hogg and his Calcutta Cup trophies ahah 😅. He also had just a great career overall. Hastings is also a really great player and it's pretty much a toss up between him & Blanco tbf.

I got a bit creative and mixed up the sexes too. Honorable mention for Prince Obolensky, just couldn't fit him into my England heavy side. 1) Some ugly Frenchman, hard as nails don't know his name. 2) Brian Moore 3) Sarah Bern 4) Martin Johnson 5) Willie John Mcbride 6) Richard Hill 7) John Pierre Rive 8) Sergio Parisse 9) Gareth Edwards or Dupont 10) Barry John or Owen Farrell (joking) 11) Jason Robinson 12) Philippe Sella 13) Brian O'Driscoll 14) Abby Dow 15) JPR

I'm surprised you went with Farrell over Wilkinson. If Farrell was eligible to play for NZ I can't imagine the AB's would tolerate Farrells lack of self-control. Elsewhere, I am biased but might have gone with Guscott next to O'Driscoll. Martin Johnson also had to be in somewhere. Again, I am biased! Interesting selection though!

  • @TheBlackJersey

    @TheBlackJersey

Farrell doesn’t have any issues with a “lack of self control”. If he was truly the “arrogant prick” most English “fans” think he is, he’d live it up on social media. Contrast that to reality, Farrell basically never posts. Select any random player with a 10+ year career and you’ll be able to find the same amount of footage, compile it all together then manipulate people into believing this is all he’s done in his career. Farrell is hated for the same reasons as Richie McCaw… because he’s obsessed with winning and England’s greatest-ever player.

@@TheBlackJersey Maybe I should rethink my perception of Farrell! However, I can't pretend that I havent seen what I've seen with my own eyes! In most England games Farrell is scuffling with opponents, grabbing them by the neck, arguing with the referee...consistently. For me, rugby comes with a code of conduct and the captain has to embody that code. Then the others follow. Discipline was one of the key components that Woodward drilled into that WC winning squad (wow, that was a long time ago!!!). He understood that at the very top level, very fine margins will determine who wins matches and trophies. Also, I dont think Farrell is arrogant, I just think he lacks discipline!

@@TomUK7these selections are subjective. Jonny Wilkinson will always have a vaunted place in England rugby . Although they played in different eras and under different rules , I agree with Max I think Farrell deserves his place. Just as Wilkinson influenced how #10 play so has Farrell. England have been lucky to has had both Certainly Farrell is abrasive but I feel you’re over exaggerating his lack of discipline. Scuffleling and grabbing necks ‘ In most games’ you reckon . Always arguing with refs , c’mon you’re exaggerating . I don’t know what you mean about this code of conduct you think he should follow. He has captained England very well and is well regarded within the international players community . During the last Lions he was voted unanimously as the players representative within the leadership team. If that isn’t a clear demonstration on how his leadership is regarded by players in the game than then by all means stick to your code of conduct. We all have our own opinions on what our expectations of captaincy and I guess discipline. Fitzy the AB captain was pretty abrasive, hated refs and generally pretty loose on the pitch , He would certainly fail your conduct test . Yet he remains a one of the great AB captains because he was good, he had the respect of his players and opponents . Martin Johnson wouldn’t pass your conduct either, he was always in the refs ears of of course when he wasn’t punching someone . And yet he was a fantastic captain. My point is that it’s fine to prefer Wilkinson, it’s ok not to like Farrell but when you are applying your own standards on say discipline on Farrell you are not being subjective or factual but using an emotional argument based on your perception and yet ignoring the same standards on other captains who are considered ‘good captains ‘

Overall, a really good side. Great to see Warburton and Faletau get the proper praise they deserve. Not just great players, but God-tier players. My biggest gripe in rugby is that a lot of people I used to play with don't rate them and I think this is basically stamping 'I play this game without understanding it' on one's forehead, but I digress. A few points, for debate, though. Jean-Pierre Rives is quite unlucky to miss out on the bench. Mervyn Davies could easily have been in at 8, as well, although I will never disagree with Faletau being chosen in any side. Mighty Mouse McLauchlan, Graham Price, and Fran Cotton all would have been worthy shouts at prop. Jerry Guscott is rightly not in the 15 but is worth an honourable mention. Sella and O'Driscoll are as rarified as it gets. Also, Ken Scotland and JPR Williams are unlucky not to be at 15 ahead of Hogg. I do strongly disagree with Farrell ahead of John and Bennett but, I agree, he is ahead of essentially all the other 10s. I think it is slightly uncharitable to say he is a much better player than Wilkinson ever was because Wilkinson revolutionised the defensive role of the 10. There would be no Owen Farrell-style 10s without his trailblazing example (much in the same way that Dan Carter is the most complete 10 ever but Mark Ella was more revolutionary and influential on how 10s play the game now). Moreover, JW would have battered his England point scoring record if not for injury. I would take OF over JW but I think JW changed how 10s play whereas OF hasn't. He has just been a great practitioner of the craft. Really enjoyed the video. Great picks.

If you’re including 5 nations players then Barry John is your 10. I’ve noticed you have a bit of a weird thing for Owen Farrell. It’s ok that’s your subjective opinion but he’s a guy that hasn’t won anywhere near enough six nations championships & grand slams given the teams he’s been in, won zero world cups and took a much longer time to score the points Jonny Wilkinson did. It’s no question Farrell is a great player but you elevate him beyond the point of reason. Recency bias sprinkled with a tinge of delusion

As you said its subjective. But using your criteria how many 6 nations and grandslams does a player need to be considered. Also why does it matter as 6 nations are team awards and we sre trying to evaluate a single player. ? Also what bearing has winning a rwc ? Again rwcs are team events do how do you evaluate a single played. I'm not saying your wrong but you pointed how players should not be elevated beyond the point of reason . Lastly how do you compare players who played in different eras under different rules?
