Great Tit’s Remarkable 48-Day Reproduction Cycle

It took this Great Tit forty-eight days to complete an entire reproduction cycle. She started by building her nest, laid a clutch of six eggs and finally raised the chicks until they were ready to fledge. This timelapse shows the entire journey in three minutes.

The female Great Tit spent several days gathering materials such as lawn moss and feathers to build this nest, once complete, she laid her eggs. They were tiny white oval-shaped, covered with light brown speckles, and 1.4 centimetres wide. She can lay up to twelve eggs in each brood, but she laid six on this occasion. The incubation period lasted twelve days, where she sat on the eggs and kept them warm whilst the male stood guard and gathered food for the female. All six eggs hatched however, only five chicks fledged. It’s not uncommon to lose some chicks from the brood. This is one of the reasons why they lay so many eggs. Any chicks that don’t make it to the end are removed from the nest to keep it clean and avoid attracting unwanted attention from predators.
