Great Peter ringing, York Minster

Great Peter of York Minster (North tower) being rung manually by Erik Loggen. September 22, 2013, ~0950am. In the beginning of the video one can hear the change ringing on 12 bells in the South tower of York Minster. At the end, when the change ringing has come back to rounds, Great Peter joins. For the occasion of the visit of the Utrechtse Klokkenspel Vereniging, the bell is rung by Erik Loggen.
The recording is in mono, because the other channel saturated too much. Although the sound recorder was not in the bell chamber, but in the adjacent stair case, slightly behind the central pillar, the recording saturated. Fortunately one of the channels is still acceptable.
I had to turn the camera to get the bell more or less completely in the field of view. There was also a second reason for doing this. This may become clear later...
Great Peter, bourdon van de York Minster wordt geluid door Erik Loggen.
e flat, es0, Mib2
10 800 kg, diameter 264,1 cm, cast by J. Taylor, 1927 (with thanks to Bart Vervaat for the data).
Many thanks to David Potter, who gave us access to the bell chamber for this occasion.

    This is called a bourdon bell and yes it does ring slow. The headstock which the bell attaches to is arched upwards so so,either bells weight is above the point of swing, it is counterbalanced. The clapper is also counterbalanced so itis also it is slowed down. This also means the clapper hits the bell and not the bell hitting the clapper.

  • @thierrypauwels

    @thierrypauwels

    7 жыл бұрын

    That is very hard to say. It depends on a lot of things, even on the weather. I remember in Cortina d'Ampezzo, I was on the mountain and the bells were ringing in the town. I could hear them as if I were only 300 yards away, but it turned out to be 4 miles. Take the thunder. This is probably a lot louder than a bell, but you cannot hear it from a distance of 10 miles, usually even not further than ~6 miles.

    Nog trager dan de Savoyarde. Maar eigenlijk heel typisch voor die Engelse bourdons. Inderdaad de Savoyarde heeft een luidsysteem dat heel erg aan de Engelse bourdons doet denken. Ook zo in Valetta en Berlin-Rathaus, maar dat zijn eigenlijk Engelse klokken.

Strange as it may sound, when I count the comments, I get 47, while at the top it says "48 comments". There might be a comment that is not displayed to me. I had already a similar experience of a discussion that had completely disappeared from the comments, while the count of comments suggested it still had to be there. I suspect that it had been removed by the one who posted it, but that the counts were still reflecting the old situation.

    No, it is an es0, a fourth lower. as0 is the secondary strike tone. The bigger the bell is, the more the secondary strike tone will dominate rather than the strike tone itself. That is why many people will think this bell is an as0 rather than an es0. But it is an es0.
