sadly, the bell chamber had to be closed to visitors after the renovation of the carillon. the recast bells were rearranged in a fashion that made it less safe to walk around. the upside: they sound stronger and more balanced in tone than ever. the trebles used to get lost in the city's street noise...no longer.

These are the bells heard in the 1958 Mercury Living Presence recording of the 1812 overture with Antal Dorati and the (then) Minneapolis Symphony. Then they headed about 45 miles up the Hudson River to record the black powder cannon shots at West Point. The recording is elsewhere here on KZread. (Be sure to catch their "documentary" track that recounts what they went through to make the recordings.)

True story...The bourdon bell was installed in a ceremony in 1930. A newsreel crew had placed mics and cables in the bell tower, to record the first ringing of the bell. Little did they know that officials from the electricians' union had been alerted. They held up the ceremony until all sound equipment was removed from the tower.

Dove sono queste campane? Addirittura un La1 da 32500 kg e un Fa1 da 58650 kg? Beh non ci starebbe male un Bel C00, da 150000 kg ovvero un Bel Do1 da 150000 kg
