Great Leaders Do What Drug Addicts Do | Michael Brody-Waite | TEDxNashville

This is my story from drug addiction and homelessness to founding and leading a company on the Inc 500 list. There are 3 principles that saved me from death and set me apart as a leader. They are small enough to fit in your pocket, yet big enough to change your life. The best part is that anyone can take these principles and immediately implement them after watching this talk. Connect with Michael at ww.michaelbrodywaite.com
In 2010, Michael left a Fortune 50 company at the height of the recession to co-found and lead InQuicker, a healthcare SaaS company that allows patients to self-schedule appointments. His leadership grew the organization from 2 employees to 50 employees and 20,000% revenue growth in less than 6 years. This exceptional growth landed InQuicker a spot on the Inc. 500 list of Fastest Growing Private Companies. Additionally, InQuicker was named “Best Place To Work” by the Nashville Business Journal 4 times and recognized by the Nashville Chamber of Commerce as Healthcare company of the year. Brody-Waite’s accomplishments include being named Most Admired CEO, Top 40 under 40 by the Nashville Business Journal and recognized by the Nashville Chamber of Commerce as Healthcare Entrepreneur of the Year. Today, Michael is CEO of the Nashville Entrepreneur Center (EC) and Founder of Leader Confidential (LC). This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

My dad always told me, when I was in the midst of my addiction: "All that effort you're putting in to getting your drugs, that attitude of resilience, put that toward doing the right thing. You'll move mountains."

It's so true!! The resilience and stubbornness to get what we want as former addicts allow us to fight through the walls of jello that most business owners get stuck in. The hard part for my own businesses is just that, the s that makes it plural. It's hard to say no to new ideas because I feel like I can take them all on! It's taken me 4 years to finally narrow down to one company that has made all the difference in the world! You really can move mountains Bekah! Hope you're going after a dream:)

Another very big principle of a 12-step recovery program is come to believe in a greater higher power who could return me to sanity (step 2) and then I make a decision to turn my life & will over to the care of God as I understood Him (step 3). Your decision, not someone else's. Too often God's importance to sobriety & recovery is omitted or ignored.

Not sure if it is good for society thought; we've had those leaders for quite a while now and the results are quite spectacular. We have a cultur civil war going on and the most effective industrial oligopol ever to take over society. Starting to miss the old conservative, greedy and self-centered leaders that used to be so irritating yet effective.

Today I am 171 days clean from a 19 year methamphetamine addiction. The sad thing is was someone who I loved with all my heart had to die of a hemorrhage stroke and methamphetamine intoxication for me to wake up and say enough is enough. My girlfriend of 15 years passed away 3 years ago. I miss her so very much. She watches over me in my sobriety, I am sure of that. Wish she was here to do the clean thing with me but that is not going to happen. I live this life for me in her honor. I love you Jonell Latham with all my ❤ and soul.

@Jacob Alanheimer for myself it comes to my faith. Trusting that no matter what the outcome of the decision/situation that I am facing, God will get me through. Even if I don't get the outcome that I want (IE, the job I want, the girl or that raise) that there is a reason and it was better for me this way. Another way that you could look at it is, to take yourself away from the current situation and separating yourself from the outcome. The outcome doesn't define you and make you who you are. Situation: If you think you could get fired because you tell the truth about a work accident, YOUR actions of surrender: take what you think the outcome will be "hoping that you don't get fired", put that in a mental gift box. When you tell your boss the truth you are also mentally giving your hope (IE the mental box) of not getting fired and then waiting to see if you get the box back or not and saying that in either situation, box back or not getting the box and getting fired, that you will be okay. This does not define who you are as a person. Does that help? My analogy may be a little off but that's how I can can conceptualize it. Does that sort of make sense?

I learned so many life lessons from surviving addiction, the most significant were: 1. if it is bad put it off for just one day, imagine getting it tomorrow, then do the same thing the next day and the next until it doesn't matter anymore, you've remained faithful and didn't give up anything just delayed it indefinitely - I have delayed indefinitely getting another hit for over 20 years now and going strong. 2. You can accomplish anything you want if you put your mind and passion to it, like walking 30km to score with no money and no chance of success, yet I got it right every time, or like like facing that impossible situation or not taking a hit today, and tomorrow and the day after. 3. Focus on now, live 100% for now. 4. Nothing is ever as bad as we imagine it will be, we can survive and get through it. 5. Life is incredibly precious, if you think you understand that you don't, being near death even flatlining twice has taught me something about just how precious, unlikely, and miraculous life is, all life, any life, it is all precious and anything that precious is worth fighting for with every fiber of your being.

People like you more when your just being true to yourself rather than trying to be something you think other people will like. Others can sense even sub consciously the energy of fakeness or inauthenticity and so no matter how much to try to say things or do things you think others will like even with a friendly smile they can sense you aren't being real. I needed this video today. This year I celebrate 15 years clean. I’ve been clean since I was 22 yrs old. The ppl closest to me, including family, have no idea I’ve been in recovery most of my life. The first several years of my sobriety I did a lot of public speaking, sharing my testimony at recovery centers, prisons, and schools. I was once so proud of my recovery, but now I live everyday with a mask on bc of the stigma attached to addiction. I am proof that if you do not practice those 3 important principles, you will forever be ashamed of who you were, regardless of who you’ve become. Not consistently practicing these principles has kept me from living my life to it’s fullest potential.

Most in our culture wear ego masks, attempt to be an ideal they have been told will be wanted (the 30 billion dollar cosmetic industry proves this), and chase external validation in some form or another their entire lives. However, those who have hit rock bottom, have no choice but to reconnect with their true selves.

At the beginning of one file, you said, "Hi, transcript decoder!" That cheered me up. Truly. I laughed every time I heard it while revising your file. Then, I come here and I watch this incredibly authentic talk and it makes me cry! I'm actually quite honored that you addressed me and said, "Hi." I thought I'd come here and say hi back. Wish you all the luck in the world with your future endeavors, and hope to transcribe more of your files! P.S: Say hi to Allen for me!

Hard to believe, isn't it? I'll tell you guys a little story. When I had worked for a chemical company, we had had a location that was having trouble producing the product at the quality that we needed. At this location a worker admitted to his boss that he had made a mistake, he was fired and the whole batch was scrapped and restarted. When they heard about it, the headquarters ordered that the man be taken back. He was rehired with a raise. You see, if someone does make a mistake, and they will, and they know that they will get fired for it, they won't tell anyone. The only time you will find out that something went wrong is at the end and you probably won't know why. So if people are honest, you can restart and correct. That is the way they do it.

These three principles are keeping me alive in PTSD also. 23 years as a firefighter thinking I could handle anything that came my way. One to many dead kids and I couldn't get out of bed. Trying to reenter the work world knowing I would have days that I was triggered and wouldn't be able to function. I was brutally honest with my clients and surrendered the outcome. And I continue to put one foot in front of the other even when I don't think I can. I needed this video.

How you doing? Keep your chin up and own your life. Forgive yourself first. Accept that you may fail the climb many times. Say it repeatedly, out loud till you accept that truth. Then say, one thing I can and will do when I fall is - I will forgive myself, dust myself and restart the climb. Something magical then happens over the many falls, the rungs of the ladder begin to hold and not fall away. This is the only way out of the hole. We have to earn our spot by trying again and again. Last thing to remember during the dark days “only force which holds the world together is love. any defect or problem arises when we drift away from this force” It can be the love for another or for self. Stay centered on love in all transactions. You will succeed.

I don't know why all these characters feel the need to share their story though. It's really not that uncommon any more-- anybody can change their life around for better or worse! When we think we're set in stone, yeah we're going to be by definition!. But nothing is ever set in stone, for better or worse... and it's when life shows us this, we get major shake up's sometimes/ it feels impossible to go on... but we overcome when we Realize we Can Wake up and just live life regardless... or because of something positive in the past no matter if it's still here or not... (And in a way I think it is over glorifying drugs or living lavishly, teaching kids you can always turn it around... When yeah sure, I'm full of bitterness and disappointment because I never majorly slacked off, got a degree straight out of highschool and still got unjustly fired from my first full-time job.... And I'll probably write a book at least for myself but... I don't know man, we don't have to share a story there's nothing inherently in the rules, no matter how rare or uncommon or movie-esque our life may feel. Who's to say if it's actually worth sharing or just inner ego anyways? xD

At twelve, I tried alcohol for the first time. By the time I was thirteen, I drank daily, whenever and wherever I could. As someone with two anxiety disorders, I was addicted to the way alcohol me feel. Nothing in life mattered more than that feeling of my heart beating slower, my breathing calm, or the sedative and bubbly effects it had on me. Despite getting serious alcohol poisoning twice and being disowned by family members, I continued onward to delve into marijuana and pill popping, whatever could slow my body down and ease my anxiety. It wasn't until I nearly died from smoking weed that was laced with a lethal amount of fentanyl did I realize I had to stop. Something just changed after that day, and I started being honest with myself. I was beginning to seriously crave alcohol and had an urge to reach into that fridge and down a crate of beer, but after watching this, I realized that I'm fully in control. This TED talk is what I really needed, thank you.

So you are a so called Highly Sensitive Person, didn't know about it, nobody helped you deal with it and thus you chose a path that seemed to help reduce the symptoms. The worst part of this story is how nobody saw who you were and that you had a total disconnect with the world. Instead they rejected you further. You are in control. There's only one thing stronger than you, which is biological incentive. So get your health up, and there's nothing stronger than the mind that is you. The initial starter for addiction is choice. So consider your choices wisely. They make the difference between near death experience, and utter happiness. If you can't do it alone, do it together. You will have to make a choice.

This Ted talk is very impressive but the claim that to be authentic leads to success is not founded in an statistical evidence aside from his unique anecdotal story. I would love to believe that going in an interview and saying your weaknesses in its rawest form will be well received but in most cases especially based on the culture of the company and state it would not. People do not want to hear the truth they do not want recieve reality and they runaway for those who give it. I was born and raised in minnesota and I have been authentic all my life I say things how they are but it is never well recieved. People here are very uncomfortable with hardened truths. That doesn’t mean I now lie but it also means I just keep my mouth shut or spin something positively: that is what they want to hear. Also he is a young white male so this has some bearing too on how society perceives him. Great that it worked for him but not realistic for most people.

When I started watching I could barely focus on anything else rather than those flip flops. Somewhere by the middle I could only listen, as I couldn't see through the tears. I'd been using drugs for over 7 escalating years and been clean for only 7 of the longest days of my life. As the talk continued my appreciation for it grew bigger but so did my wonder about the necessity of those flip flops. When it reached the end and I was emotional AF, I looked down and reality smacked me in my addict face. I'm wearing flip flops. Thank you.

Serving others in a positive light is what it's all about. I had to fall victim to addiction to really comprehend that. I found out who I really am. No more or no less then anyone else. I feel the pain of others around me just like you said. We all relate through pain and helping other people ease that pain or make a positive change helps me ease mine and changes me in a positive way.

I've been clean for just about more than 2 years now. Mainly weed and alcohol. I worked in the film industry - insane pressure, 16 hour days and low pay. My habit was smoking before sleep and drinking and smoking myself to death over weekends. I quit cold turkey because I had to financially (quit the film industry, it was a cancer to my soul) and also because I knew that the road would only get worse. Studying again and it's going well. A successful career lays ahead of me, yet I know that if I have enough money to retire the first thing I'd do is hit a bong and pour the whiskey...I crave intensely every day and fight every day, because I'll need to support my parents financially when they are older. I was very ambitious once in my life. Now I just want to reach early retirement so that I can smoke and drink. I honestly cannot see anything else making me happy or leading to me being 'fulfilled'. So I choose the next best thing - feeling better for a while each day before reality sets in again. I don't even know why I wrote this. Got this far, might as well post it.

Go to meetings. Just Google NA (narcotics anonymous) or AA (alcoholics anonymous) in your town/area. It helps with the cravings. It helps with the insanity. Users or addicts who don't use or aren't in active addiction, but also aren't in active recovery, are basically just "dry drunks." We don't have a drug problem, we have a thinking problem. So when we stop the drugs, we still have a problem. For me, meetings and being with other sober/clean addicts are my only solution.

I can relate to your post bc I feel like that when i slack & not do what I suggested. Jessica Finey’s post describes it perfectly.

My name is Nathan and I am an addict. I was talking with a buddy the other day and its been nearly a decade since I've gone more than 2 weeks clean and sober and I'm only 28. A part of me hates myself. I'm so scared of being alone with myself drugs and alcohol make it so I'm too slow or forgetful to ruminate on anything. At the same time, I like being 'under the influence' as an excuse to be myself because people are willing to forgive and forget most anything you say or do so long as you are 'f*@ked up' while doing it. It just makes me feel f*@ked up in the morning. I wanted to comment on this video right after I saw it. Only now, 2 shots and 4 tall boys later can I press send. It's not even 1pm
