The 100 Percent Rule That Will Change Your Life | Benjamin Hardy | TEDxKlagenfurt

Why most people struggle when it comes to losing weight or getting rid of bad habits? Is there a chance to get unstuck from unnecessary fallbacks and permanently change our bad habits? In this TEDxTalk, Benjamin shares the secret on how making a radical change is not only possible but required to live a life of integrity, meaning, and purpose. SUMMARY: 🌟#1 SELF IMAGE Self image How you see yourself. How you see yourself determines how you act. See yourself, not from your current circumstances, but from the circumstances you hope you have Listen over and over again to a different Output and RE-wire your belief system through REPETITION Your input changes your output. Your outlook changes how you act Listen to things that train you to see yourself differently Bold behavior --> peak experience --> Identity Shift 🌟(4.22) #2 SPEND MONEY ON YOUR GOALS Invest money in your FUTURE identity, not your current one. Tell a story based on the FUTURE, not on the past. Explain yourself based on who you are going to be and where you're going, NOT on who you were, and why you are the way you are. 🌟 #3 THE POINT OF NO RETURN (4.25) Study of Wannabe Entrepreneurs vs Actual Successful Entrepreneurs "Have you ever had a point of no return experience?" A moment where you can't go back to who you were, and you are forced to move forward and shift into a new identity. "A mind stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions" No longer be the person you formerly were. Be the person you want to be, NOW. Because of this identity shift, in 18 months, Tom lost 175 lbs started a successful company, changed his whole life 🌟#4 (7.57) WHY FAD DIETS, 30 DAY DIETS DON'T WORK Changing your behavior has to start with FIRST a changing your identity. When your identity is in CONFLICT with your goals, it does not work. "How you do anything is how you do everything" 🌟#5 100% COMMITMENT IS EASIER THAN 98 % COMMITMENT (8.34) Story of Elco from Amsterdam Struggled with his weight his entire life Always had a story in his head that he will always struggle with his weight and self-destructive behavior He struggled to sleep One night he had a thought come to him: "What would happen if I went back to nature and eat clean?" Then a second thought came to him: "What would happen if I did this for the rest of my life?" From that moment, he saw what was possible. "100% commitment is easier than 98% commitment." If you are only 98% committed, you haven't really made a decision. 🌟#6 DECISION FATIGUE (10.55) When you haven't made a decision, you're not actually clear on what you're going to do. This leads to a tug of war in your mind, when the moment comes and you have to make a decision. This is called DECISION FATIGUE, otherwise known as Willpower You haven't made a choice, and you're not actually sure what you're going to do. Because you're unsure, the situation wins over you. And Social Psychology states that people are the byproduct of their situation. "Once I made a decision, I never thought about it again" - Micheal Jordan Once you make a decision, you have to cut off all alternative options 🌟#7 ASK THIS QUESTION for a PERMANENT SHIFT (12.04) Shift your idenity by asking the question: "What would happen if I did this for the rest of my life?" Not just for 30 days.. Not just for 1 year... But for the rest of my life? "Why would you do something for only for a year? WHat would happen a year from now? What if you just made the decision and no longer have to play a mebtal tug of war for the rest of your life? 🌟#8 WHY WILLPOWER DOESN'T WORK (13.21) An example with the alarm clock. When you haven't made a DECISION that you'll wake up at a certain time, when the alarm goes off you're not really sure what you're going to do. And since the situation always wins if you haven't made the decision, so you'll probably hit the snooze button. Write a list of PROS and CONS "What would happen if I did this for the rest of my life? The biggest PRO is that once you make this decision, you would never have to think about it again. When you WILLPOWER your way through a goal, or set short goals, you are never actually able to let go of the thing you really want to let go of. Once you're able to make a decision on who you want to be for the rest of your life. and once you make that shift by giving it 100% and putting off all other options You will be FREE, and be aligned with who you really want to be, and start doing things you've been putting off for years. 🌟#8 CONFIDENCE Confidence is the byproduct of prior performance Once you start acting confidently and Powerfully, you develop confidence. Confidence than allows you to develop imagination, see a bigger future, and believe in yourself Confidence allows you to be courageous 🌟#9 REFLECT IN YOUR OWN LIFE "What are some of the things YOU have been resisting? What are some of the things YOU have been thinking of doing... that has been on your mind for a long time. You can't do it through willpower. You have to do it through making the Shift to becoming who you want to be.

This is so true. I used to worry about my drinking habit years ago, both for my finances and my health. But I realized that I had conditioned myself to obsess over whether to buy wine or not every single time I went to the grocery store. And I always gave in, every time, because I hadn't committed to quitting forever. I was only deliberating about whether to drink that day. That's not a commitment to stopping. It was actually remarkably easy to quit once I decided I was going to stop completely. Thankfully, I wasn't physically addicted. I know that others have much harder times with it so I was lucky. But for me, it really all came down to committing 100%. After 2 weeks of reaffirming my decision every time I went shopping, I stopped thinking about it completely. In the store, at home, after work, out with friends. It doesn't bother me at all to see it or talk about it because I decided it's just not even an option. It really worked.

This echos several different stages in my life: in my early 20s when I realized I had to stop defining myself through the lens of my family (and stop blaming them for who I was) and become who I wanted to be; in my late 30s when I committed 100% to restarting my education after years of thinking it was too late for me, then getting my BS and MS degrees within 8 years while working full-time; and again at 50 when, in the space of 1 year, I lost my husband of 21 years, moved interstate to take a new job, then was made redundant / laid-off and lost both my car and my house but knew that I was able to pick my self up and start over again. Making the decision is everything.

If you imagine yourself as the person you want to be then your behaviours change to align with the person you want to be. After my teen years I felt defined by my background and the people who knew me. So, I moved away, far away and redefined myself. I presented myself as who I wanted to be and set ambitious goals for life and achieved them. Looking back, I know now that one's life success or failure can be strongly influenced by those around you, just because they have low expectations of you.

This video actually inspired me a lot, I took notes, so I don't forget anything. I just made a decision that i am going to clean the room I currently share with my sibling everyday for the rest of my life. (until i move out, then it will switch to my own future room) I know some people already do this, but I always procrastinate and I gotta start somewhere. Everyone starts somewhere. Hopefully waking up to a clean room everyday will make me feel a little better in the morning so I won't dread over having to clean it later. My goal is to be a self made millionaire. I am currently 15, turning 16 next month -Meadow Scott, 6/10/22 6:22 PM

What I learnt from this powerful talk: 1- If you want to make a life changing decision(e.g change of habits), go all in and don't make a decision that would end up making you change your mind to choose another alternative. 2- Like the Speaker's friend(Tom), when you want change in your life, accept and embrace the vision(his friend buying suits of smaller sizes even when he's overweight because he realized the suit was a constant reminder) 3- When making a serious or life changing decision, ask yourself "what would happen if i did this for the rest of my life?"

I recently heard someone talk about aligning your goals and values, and that if they are not in sync (e.g. if my goal is to be a successful entrepreneur, but what I value is having 4 hours a day to play video games), then you will have frustration, procrastination, and lack the ability to reach your goals. If instead my goals are in sync with my values (what I would argue are part of my "identity") then I will be able to make progress towards the goals. So I love what Ben is saying here about saying "I am..." and identifying myself as someone whose values are in alignment with my stated goals.

Thinking about the changes you made in your lives w adopting children and everything. Bless you and thank God for leading me here today. To those who question me about the above statement, let’s just say that I’m aware of Analytics and have a background in Biology and Psychology - Basically, I’m a very skeptical and questioning, open minded, rational person, but somehow I “know.” This is where faith doesn’t quite make sense but can ring more true than some of the truest proofs.

It started great with exercises, ToDos, Books to read and learning videos, Challenges. I loved it. Then we were selected into Pod Buddies - three people, similar to our Challenges and Choices, so we got actually to share our progress in a weekly basis. The progress started to fall flat, when the videos were becoming repetitive and it switched from once-a-week-video to a monthly video. For me the weekly videos were some sort of motivation to pursue the goals and keep improving myself. Our Pod Buddies trio calls also fell apart few months after, but we still chat sometimes :) I completely dropped out of the course sometime in the mid of July. So in all fairness, those 6.5 months were cool and helped, I do not regret taking the course, but when he announced the program for next year, I did not enter again. Neither did any of my Pod Buddies. This is my personal view and I am sure there were recurring members to come back again. Hope that helps.

I did a Goleman video course a couple of years ago. He interviewed a bunch of successful people in various fields, getting them to agree with him about the characteristics of successful leaders. The psychiatrist that he interviewed caught him off guard by asking, "Do unsuccessful leaders also have those characteristics?" He said he'd like to see a study that compared successful with unsuccessful people. Goleman had only spoken to successful people, so there was no real way to say if those characteristics lead to success. This is typical of modern coaching. Nice stories, but how many try it and fail compared to how many try it and succeed? Are there any characteristics that those that succeed have in common that the failures don't have?

Great fighting approach 👍, positive dreams of future definitely keeps people motivated. Another way is to develop stature by being self ethical and rational; avoiding temptation, panicking, arrogance. If you know you are courageous rational person who doesn't accept injustice and also doesn't harm others or take advantage of them, down to earth creative person, then you can develop great stature. This can lead to easy obvious decision making and step by step self progress. Having detachment and not getting driven by others is important too.
