Love the subtle look, and the lack of over-the-top flares are a plus for me.

I also prefer less anamorphic. flare than over the top, super saturated that we see on some modern lenses

Love the look, it really looks brilliant! The only issue is the aspect ratio that you get from the 16:9 sensor. I really wish Sony would update their cameras to include and open gate mode to allow for a 4:3 so you could get a more proper cinemascope ratio.

In the world where most modern anamorphic lenses have saturated “acid” blue flares, subdued might indeed not be such a bad thing. I prefer the level of flaring on the 50mm, but I would certainly take less flaring over more flaring.

I spotted laowa working on a 2x anamorphic. I only saw a photo of what it looks like but I’m excited to see that more than the great joy. The 50mm with constant squeeze would be a near perfect lens. All that is left is to open to T2. Even the T2.9 is dimmer than my DZO catta and Xeen at the exact Tstop. The 35mm with no flare is bothering me to the bone. The reason to go anamorphic is for the character, yet I see none. The 50mm was a little too plain as it and this siphons my burning excitement to a patient monkey branching excitement forwards Laowa. FIX THE 50mm great joy and let us have our FLARES for fucks sake. I don’t understand how they did so many impossible features and nearly throw it all away at the last few steps of the finish line.

Good points. As much as I would love it for a PL cine anamorphic with a 1.8x squeeze at this price point, T2 would be cool but completely unrealistic. Both Great Joy lenses are providing so much, for the price we could never dream of a few years ago, but let's see what happens next. Competition is good. The end users like us benefit from it :)

These shots are very Terrence Malick. 😄 Like some of the other commenters, I’d like a little more flare but otherwise, these shots are gorgeous. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting. Quality looks good, but almost no flare, even when shooting directly into the sun. Suspect many will want more flare than that.

Yes, I was intentionally pushing it with the most direct lighting to show the amount and quality of the flares.

Very filmic and it is really 1.8X Too bad the 50mm varies in ratio from 1.8X to 1.6X aprox. at closer focus. I hope they could fix that. And of course taking care in their upcoming 85mm (or 80mm).

Yes, 50mm is a bit different, not a super close match to this and yet, if you want a set, it's still a closest match, so it's a difficult one :)

@@gaboguerra950 The new Sirui anamorphics aren't constant squeeze like this lens. In that the amount of squeeze changes with focal distance. Expect that would make editing ... difficult. Having to eye and manually adjust the proper aspect ratio for each shot. The 50mm Great Joy also has that issue, but this new 35mm is constant squeeze.
