I like them, but they are so heavy and not fast enough, the Remus are light and create really nice bokeh. I hope they will make a 1.8X T2 lens next

T2 1.8 would be MASSIVE… and beautiful 😳 I would be all over the Remus if they were actually usable at t2. They are bit too soft wide open imo w/ unattractive CA. What I like about these is that they are pleasantly sharp wide open and have a little bit more of that waterfall goodness than its competition. I was really hoping the Remus were going to be a winner for me 😭 The weight of the lenses is a lot compared to the micro lenses on the market but when it comes to the stretch factor vs the weight and size of the lenses on the market that are comparable, they’re pretty light!

I sold my set a few weeks ago, days before they dropped the price. These are a great first set, but the synchro focus design on the 50 and lack of consistency in the set… these will never be a long term solution for professional workflows. Really pleased with the outcome on the projects I used them for. Nice review

The focus issue is my only issue! I’ve actually found these to be the only ones that are closest to being efficient for “professional” use out of all the budget options out there! If that 50 was fixed…. Man!

Honestly, even some 'rental only' options dont match perfectly from lens to lens so I dont think it's a deal breaker considering that (flaring aside) these lenses look fairly similar to eachother. The strech changing on the 50mm however is dissapointing for sure! It's hard to have one lens in the set have an issue that needs post correction that the others dont.

Congrats on the newborn baby! Those lenses are sweet, I think during the cyber Monday sales they were individually sold for a price a little over 1k each, I might have to start saving up again lol 😄

Great video bro! Totally agree, the 85mm is the jewel of the set, but the 50mm is probably the most useful; just wish it had the constant squeeze! Tempted to get the pre-order set of Remus, those look pretty amazing for sub-$1k 1.5x anamorphics!

Thank you! To me, the only thing that is more attractive is the price tag. They seem to less quality lenses overall minus barrel distortion, which can be done in post. This all makes sense though considering the 1.8x is more expensive!

Hmm… I would say that these are a better overall experience, but the “look” of the aivascope is my favorite. Fiddling with adapters can get annoying though. Realistically if the 50mm was without its quirks, I’d probably use that 80% of the time. So an aivascope might make more sense in my situation since I wouldn’t be switching lenses as often, but I was a starting to not enjoy using adapters with the extra hassle that comes with using them. Love your content btw!

They are sharper and cleaner overall w/o being in that sirui territory. I would feel more comfortable using these on larger productions by far BUT overall I prefer the look of the Aiva

I’m actually surprised and somewhat impressed with the Nero adapter. I went in with mixed feelings before getting it because I heard people saying it was too soft. What I’ve learned is that people were probably going too long on the focal length and/or using old vintage taking lenses that aren’t soft in the first place. It has a nice amount of character and I’m able to use my artisans at f2 and still have sharper look but not TOO sharp like the sirui lenses. The main issue with the Nero is that it’s not as versatile with different focal length taking lenses. 50mm is pretty much the sweet spot on full frame. 50mm looks great and constant squeeze. Anything long it gets too soft for my liking. It’s also super small and light so it’s much more pleasing to use hand held and doesn’t feel like the other overly big and heavy adapters. I pretty much call it a 50mm lens even though it’s an adapter and I’m fine with that since 50 is the most useful for me anyway. So far I think I like the combo of the Nero and a sharp taking lens over the sirui and the Greatjoy 50. I’m got my to actually return my Greatjoy 50mm and save the money. Thinking about keeping my 85mm though because I can’t get that 85 to look as clean on the Nero. Check out the Nero and Artisans50mm f2 if you get your hands on one and tell me what you think!

Never liked the look of the Nero personally! Reminded me too much of a fish bowl and if your subject is not dead center you’re kinda screwed…. Plus the CA is wild. Doesn’t look bad for super artsy stuff at t4

My issue with the 50mm is that at close focus it’s actually pretty much 1.6x stretch if I’m not mistaken. Rarely am I even focusing to infinity with anamorphics so i struggle even considering that lens to actually be 1.8x stretch at all. I will say it certainly has more character than the sirui lenses at least.

It around 1.68 at minimum and 1.75 slightly at around 1.5m at 2m+ it’s back to 1.8

I love the look of the great joy lenses and do want them so bad. I don’t really care for flares, mostly just the other unique character found in anamorphics. The Remus are some of the first budget ones that don’t have pin cushion, but I do think the aberration and distortion might be a bit over the top, but I do like a bit of barrel distortion. But, barrel distortion is easily added in post, at the sacrifice of a little more image. Only great joy complaint is 50mm has mumps issues. Given most all the other anamorphic budget lenses(including the other great joys) don’t have mumps at a similar or lower price sometimes makes me want to choose different ones over the great joy.

Interesting points! A lot of reeeeaaalllly expensive lenses have that mumps issues. Very annoying but easily manageable. I definitely wish it wasn’t there though…

I would rather get these than the Sirui Saturn line, but I plan on doing a lot of gimbal work with the DJI RS3 Mini and A7S III camera. The 35mm Great Joy coupled with the A7S III nearly reaches the 4.4lbs weight limit of the RS3 Mini. So I am forced to get the Sirui Saturn 35mm. As for my tripod rig, I'd like to get the Greatjoy 85mm, but I don't think the footage will cut well with footage taken with the Saturn 35mm due to the different stretch factors, so I am forced to get the Sirui Saturn 75mm.

I got the GJ 50mm 2.8 1.8x to go with my Panasonic S5 2x using the Open Gate mode. Generally liked it, but was bummed out because the image circle didn't quite cover the 3:2 sensor. Had to crop both sides to get rid of the vignette. Cropping reduces resolution... defeats the purpose of Open Gate in the first place. Starting to wish I got the Sirui 1.6x version instead, which delivers full Open Gate. But then, I got the GJ lens at $998.00 on sale, so maybe I can live with that.

Hmmm when you shoot in open gate, you have to crop in anyways to achieve a 2.4:1 aspect ratio because it has a 1.8x squeeze. Unless you’re using filters that heavily vignettes, you shouldn’t be losing much if anything at all

Personally, I don't mind an aspect ratio slightly wider than 2.4:1, if I can hold onto better resolution provided by Open Gate. But you've buttressed my point that the GJ doesn't fit on the 3:2 sensor (the small writing says it is for a 4:3 sensor), whereas the Sirius 1.6x does fit. In the excitement of making the purchase, I perhaps didn't want to read the specs too hard...

I had the Greatjoys for about a month. They were good - but for some reason just did not hit the “feels” the right way for me. I get the same vibe but worse from the Sirui’s I have owned and the Nanomorphs I tried out last September. I have seen some great results with reshiming the Remus lenses. I’m sort of an anamorphic junkie. I started with projector lens builds before moving on to a bunch of different budget Sirui’s, finally getting a proper set of Vazen 28 / 65mm 1.8x and then finally two atlas Orions. IMO the Vazens are the most underrated. I think they perform better than the Atlas at a much lower cost. All that said I think. My absolute favorite combination to date is my Aivascope 1.75x paired with Voitlanders APO glass. After trying the Aivascope with a slew of lenses over the last couple of years ( I started with the Aivascope 1.5x ) including Contax Zeiss/ Leica Rs, Canon FDs and Nikkor AIS lenses the Voitlgtlander APO 35 / 50 / 90 are incredible. The 35 and 50 have an APO design that eliminates CA and the image is incredibly clean which is something your going to want as almost any anamorphic block is going exaggerate CA etc. This combination has fantastic controllable flares that have great texture and complexity to them without looking like streak filters ( I’m looking at you nanomorphs ), bokeh is very nice, elongated and has a great waterfall texture without looking nervous in higher frequency areas of background detail. Barrel distortion is pleasing and the image is detailed without looking overly sharp and clinical. You can use the Aiavascope adapter to create a budget Voightlander 3 lens set for about $5k that has competitive image IQ with dedicated scope sets I have used that cost upwards of $65k or permanently attach 3 aivascopes to the 3 Voigtlanders for convenience and have an incredible set of 1.75x f2 ( 35 / 50 ) and 2.8 ( 90 ) that are gorgeous even wide open.

@@AnthonyRodriguezz I hear you - adapters are a pain. I suspect we’re probably nearing the end of them as dedicated anamorphic scopes get more affordable. Completely agree with you on the 50 being the most useful in that set. You really made em look great on your sample footage and talking head portion of your video. I’m a sucker for flares that are there when you want and controllable when you need them and that’s one of the areas I struggled with that set. However they are coated it made it so that there was hardly any flaring no matter what I’d try short of pointing the camera directly at the noon day sun ( bad idea ha! ) I’m leaning towards eventually getting two more 1.75x Aviascopes and permanently attaching each of them to the other two voightlander APOs for a dedicate three lens set. I can lock in infinity for each lens and have them good to go as needed. Only drawback is the unequal weight and FF gear placement when compared to modern purpose built scopes.

I think these are the best anamorphic lenses you can buy at this price point. They are maybe a little too clean for me and inconsistent across the set but not a massive deal breaker, considering the cost - almost picked up a set in the recent sale, but I want to wait to see how the Remus pan out once they're in more people's hands. The whole marketing of those lenses has been a car crash - I don't know why anyone would pre-order them based on the scarce and inconsistent sample footage. I'm cautiously optimistic about the Remus, but deffo wont be dropping any money until I see more sample footage. If they're not great it'll be a shame as they really will have missed a great opportunity and I'm sure many people would have been happy to pay a bit more if it meant slightly improved optics.

If the Remus are good enough… I’m selling these. But from the footage I’ve seen, it doesn’t look to be that way! I haven’t found these to be tooo inconsistent. Have you seen a drastic color cast between lenses? Some have been commenting about that but I haven’t noticed it to be drastic. I get that these are “clean” but the waterfall bokeh is more pronounced than most offerings from what I can remember. Ive found it to be a healthy balance for paid work imo. Yeah, I’d love to get a set a mercurys that get pretty swirly and are fairly sharp… but that’s nowhere near the budget rn 😭

@@AnthonyRodriguezz I just felt like they evolved the look of the lenses with each focal length they released, rather than releasing a consistent set all at once. It's not a big deal, I didn't really notice it as much on my Komodo, but did on full frame. Benefit of Remus is that they can be speed boosted and don't have the protruding rear element so am hoping they turn out to be better than initial sample footage suggests.

What’s interesting is that in a lot of content I’ve watched that’s shot with anamorphic lenses, I’ve seen different kinds of flares within the same movie or even commercial. If they were to at least release a 50 with constant squeeze I’d probably hesitate to look anywhere else

The look vs squeeze factor was definitely my favorite coming out of the aiva but I was leaning more towards having individual primes than a scope the more I used it. I still think the aiva is incredible and honestly I’d get one, if these lenses didn’t exist. These lenses give me just enough characteristics whilst being the easiest to use for production scenarios!

Sleeper lenses for sure!

idk i love flares and interesing bokeh and softness in the corners... for everything else i have the gm lenses ... if a client wants clean image i got gm if the client wants something interesting i give him a big opposite of the gm. the in betweens havetheir place but i like it to do that way

What do you mean by color shift? The lenses shift color from one another or in general the set has a color shift? If it’s in general, this is for any lens that is out there. Some shift a bit more but every lens out there has a “color shift” These to tend to be a tad bit warmer

@@GabrielScindian you are absolutely correct. That's the biggest con of the 1.8x lenses. VERY INCONSISTENT from set to set. This seems like one of those KZread vids that dares to be different. How can one declare its best without testing side by side? Anamorphics are generally chosen based on character. 1.5x is their best anamorphics so far: Barrel distortion, CONSISTENT SQUEEZE between focus range, sublime character punching around its budget, and most importantly CONSISTENT LOOK ACROSS unlike the 1.8x that is warmer in some lenses. Only con is that it's the softest wide open. But how many professional projects are shot wide open on anamorphics?

I did not notice a huge color shift between the lenses. Also, almost all lens sets have some sort of shift. Not ideal but not a deal breaker or even something I’ve noticed strongly

@@AnthonyRodriguezz valid point but a lot of us noticed a HUGE color shift among the set we had and decided to go spherical. The comments in this video as well as other testers can't all be seeing the wrong color. Time will tell if their 1.8x or 1.5x will be the true winner. At least, it seems like they listened to criticisms of1.8x and made 1.5x consistent.

Love these lenses…. Blazar is bringingout the new Remus series …. Ordered it directly. Atlas will cry 😅
