I think, that The Wheel of Time did a perfect job of representing a lost civilization. In my mind the best, instead of a civilization, it was a whole age in time. The 2nd Age in the WoT; Technology and Magic worked in harmony with each, there was no war. World peace for everyone, before “The Breaking” and then the loss of what they knew as humanity and technology during “The Collapse”. It is absolutely amazing, in the books they wonder what a time like that was like. It seems alien to them. Very awesome video man!

I love all the Atlantis stuff and the idea that past civilizations had knowledge that was lost to us. Have you ever heard about the Antikythera Mechanism? How do you feel about the theory that Amethyst Empress' father, the Opal Emperor married a woman from a matriarchal society (Leng)? This would be why the Amethyst Empress is the first Empress in the ancient history of YiTi. This could explain some of the motivation behind the Bloodstone Emperor taking his sister's throne by force. This is a parallel for how Aegon II usurped his Rhaenyra's throne by using the precedent set by the Great Council of 101. I read a book called "The Sacred Hoop" in which Native American author and activist Paula Gunn Allen explains that many NA cultures were matriarchal, but the colonizers were threatened by the power held by NA women-leaders in their societies and did everything to undermine them. Do you think GRRM might have used that as inspiration when writing the story of colonization by GEotD?

  • @DavidLightbringer

I'm not sure about the latter but I do like the theory about the Opal E very much! I'll chew on that a bit... but it makes sense - NN (who may be the AE) needs to be an "elf woman" of some kind, so if Opal E married a Lengii God Empress, AE would be part Old Ones or whatever the Lengii are. Sweet, love this.

I think it was Crowfood's daughter that noticed the pattern in which Amethyst Empress was the only Empress in that line, and that implied some connection to a matriarchal society.

Just a quick correction about Beleriand and Numenor. Beleriand was submerged at the end of the War of Wrath at the closing of the first age. Numenor was raised out of the sea as a reward for the houses of men who aided the valar in their fight against Morgoth. So it came into the picture a little while after Beleriand ceased to exist. Other than that you're in point. Edit: on another note, the GEoTD / Asshai dragonlords is one of my favorite theories of all time.

Phaethon destroying parts of the Earth with his joyride is why Apollo took the reins (haha) as the new Sun God. Maybe there's some kind of relation to the Lord of Light, like maybe NK/AA's consciousness is acting as the Lord of Light after the last like Master Fire Mage died in Valyria. Or the first (and current) Lord of Light was AA and the Valyrian fire mages were worshipping him so he granted them power over fire. The name Lord of Light and Shadow could even come from AA causing the Moon Meteors, and one of his heinous acts was that he was proud of the sheer death and destruction he'd caused, intentionally or not.

Do you think it's possible that Garth is an ancient Westerosi memory of the God on Earth and the GEOTD's presence in Westeros? It seems to me that, especially in terms of the number of wives/children they had, these myths overlap. This could hint at an even deeper GEOTD presence in Westeros; and serve as evidence that the GEOTD didn't just dominate eastern Essos but was a world-spanning empire

You've probably covered this somewhere, but what if the title A Song If Ice And Fire isn't actually about Jon and Danny, or even dragons and others? The Long Night shaped their whole current world, the wall, Danys dragons, the others, house Stark, it all started with that event. And its about to happen again. If a comet caused it, then basically _its_ responsible for shaping the world. The current one is responsible for a lot of the characters actions when they took it as a signs, and if it impacts then it'll shape their future. Basically, the books driving forces are the comets, and could be described as 'hey look what stuff these comet caused'. Comets, of course, being celestial bodies made of ice, but that burn like an inferno when they hit the atmosphere. A song of ice and fire.

The Inca's had an Empire akin to the Roman Empire. Tainas in the Caribbean had more rights than European. They weren't savages, the colonizers erased our history. Edit: Is it weird that I think that the Targaryen had a bigger role in the beginning of the Valerian empire. They bread dragons for war and that's how they conquered. Maybe they lost their power but obviously they are more gifted. We can't deny the dragon dreams and we don't know if other valerian had them.

I have to wonder how bad of a guy the Bloodstone Emperor really was. The tales about him sure are fantastical, but so are the tales told in Westeros and elsewhere about Daenerys and her reign in Meereen. And we see that those tales have a nucleus of truth in them, but have been twisted to make her sound evil (in small you see this with the stories told to Oberyn about baby Tyrion). Could this be the same with the Bloodstone Emperor? Given that Daenerys will kick a popular Faegon off the throne and probably destroy a good bit of King's Landing doing it (inadvertently by wildfire or otherwise), and that likely the Long Night will fall shortly after, I could see tales forming about her in future Westeros that are not so positive. And she could do the transformation of Bloodstone Emperor to Azor Ahai after that as well. Just pondering 🤔

  • @DavidLightbringer

    @DavidLightbringer

    2 жыл бұрын

oh for sure Marc, we always have to ask that question. I *think* the big twist is that AA is actually a bad guy, and that the BSE myth is intended to reveal the true nature of the "hero" AA, but it's of course hard to say for sure and we may never know. They are archetypes for the current characters to fit into more than anything - Euron is "acting" like the BSE of legend, while Dany might get perceived that way even though she's someone else (NN, eventually, sacrificing her life to save the world).

There is what looks a heck of a lot like a sunken continent, or sub-continent, already on the map. Maybe you bring it up later, as I'm not done watching, but the fact has been bugging me. Look to the north of Mossovy and Nefer on a map of Essos. You'll see a place called The Thousand Islands in the Shivering Sea. Usually, as with Oceanea, a sunken continent under the Phillipines and *I think* New Zealand, a whole bunch of islands in a cluster this way indicates that there was once land there. Another Hammer of the Waters, perhaps? We do know Essos has its equivalent to the CotF. Also, I love cockatoos. I've never met an aggressive one. They're always super friendly. If I didn't have Maine Coon cats, which have about the same prey drive as a bobcat and males can weigh in excess of 30lbs at their largest, I'd love to have one. Nice birb.

I love how engaging you are with your audience. You don't see that much. I have a gut feeling our politics don't align* but talking about anything else, I imagine we'd see eye to eye and work off one another, as you seem like a pretty sharp individual. *My politics and philosophy are based around the writings of Ayn Rand and Robert A. Heinlein, along with the Founders, sans slavery, though I believe they left too many holes open for corruption. At the end of the day, I just want trans people who chose to transition at 25 or older - Buck Angel started at 30 and he's a fucking stud for a guy whose nickname is "Tranpa". He doesn't look like he's about to turn 60 at all. - to be able to guard their marijuana gardens with AK-47s, and possibly a few well-placed booby traps. Really, my politics can be summed up with a sentence: I just want to be left alone, and want the same for others. I love charity and once I hit a perfectly realistic goal with my small business, I'll be donating half my profits to charity. P. S. The only reason I said 25 as a good age for transition is because this is the age at which the brain's development is fully complete, but if someone wants to go ahead at 18 or 20, that's respectable. I just worry about kids getting into something they don't understand, or teens following what even Bill Maher said is starting to look like a trend, and detrans folks really break my heart. I know there aren't that many, but more are coming out every day. There is a whole Tik Tok community, because the only people that are there for them are one another. It's a complex issue that deserves to be taken with nuance.

via evaporative cooling and other complex effects, (im perdy sure... :\ ), the water buildup can also be inside glaciers. I believe that scientists today are finding that water can be completely invisibly held inside icy masses and can "burst" out from detailed satellite image studies. Don't take my word, i'm lazily not checking this one. Heard it from a friend a couple years ago.

Much of free folk/wildling society has already been lost and this is thematically and symbolically addressed. There was a sad song about the extinction of the giants and Mance names himself Abel. A name Mance chose as an anagram of Bael but which GRRM probably chose as a reference to a biblical representative of hunter-gatherers murdered by his farmer brother. Jon Snow knowing nothing is another way to stress that there is an entire society and culture up there that is alive and alien that nobody south of the wall knows anything about. When they get wiped out by the Others nobody will remember them. The silence will last long and long and all that.

28:00 The 'Greek Dark Age' is thought to have lasted about five or six centuries. Mycenean Greece was one of several cultures which fell apart during the Late Bronze Age Collapse. This is the same event (although it was more a process, a chain reaction, than a singular event) which involved the Trojan War, the Egyptian wars against the Sea Peoples, and the Egyptian Empire losing control of the land of Canaan, which is probably the kernel of truth which eventually morphed into the book of Exodus. This happened around-about 1200BC. There was a Greek alphabet during the Late Bronze Age, but after the Collapse there's a complete absence of it, with no archeological artifacts with writing from after that date. This is why Homer, and people like him, had to memorise stories instead of writing them down. It wasn't until about 400, maybe 500 BC (that's off the top of my head, may not be exactly right) that the Greeks reacquired literacy. This time, they borrowed and altered the Phoenician script, rather than imitating the old Bronze Age Greek script. What I find really interesting is that the Egyptian character was aware of this Greek Dark Age, with the detail that the Greeks used to have literacy, lost it, and eventually regained it. This suggests an institutional knowledge, with history books having been handed down within Egyptian academia for hundreds of years. Obviously I'm not saying that the whole Atlantis story is literally true, but it's interesting seeing these tidbits of true information.

It seems to me that the things said about the bloodstone Emperor are very similar to the things said about Dany in ADWD. Perhaps it's fake news and there is more to the story than we think. Kind of like with the war between the children and the first men. The truth is muddled because the Long Night is a historical bottleneck.

Would the Daynes be descendants of non-dragonrider peoples from the great empire of down and the Valyrians be descended from the dragonriders from the great empire of dawn? There's no indication that the Daynes used to be dragonriders (that I've noticed, at least). It makes sense for dragonriders to go somewhere full of active volcanoes since fire magic is a big thing for them (and volcanoes seem to have some cultural importance to them since most of the locations we're told dragonriders went to seem to be close to volcanoes and the Valyrians even thoght the dragons came from volcanoes, which while unlikely to be factually true, may have come from an earlier sense of importance attributed to volcanoes. If anything, continually doing human sacrifices in order to keep a ring of volcanoes from exploding in your face for 5000 years seems incovenient, but the Valyrians don't seem to have ever considered the possibility of moving somewhere else, then again, maybe it's just hubris), but if someone isn't a dragonrider, dorne seems like a nice place to go to settle down.

You thing I find interesting that didn’t get much focus was that the R’hllorists were a supposed cause for the Doom. Were the maesters just connecting the Doom being a fiery cataclysm to R’hllor fire magic or is there some bad blood between the Valyrians and the R’hllorists that doesn’t get exposited?

Well there was a Trojan War, several of them actually, there are 6 or 7 levels to the city showing that it was sacked and rebuilt several times, similar to how Rome's subway system still finds full buildings completely underground. Atlantis itself almost certainly isn't real in the fantastical sense but it could have been based on the very real destruction of Santorini by a volcano, which would have been a distant memory to the Greeks at that point in time. They could have forgotten in the chaos that Santorini was a Greek city-state like the ones on other islands and thought that it must have been a massive heinous empire to have the gods' wrath brought down on them like that.
