Graphing and describing transformations of a quadratic equation
👉 Learn how to graph quadratic equations in vertex form. A quadratic equation is an equation of the form y = ax^2 + bx + c, where a, b and c are constants. The graph of a quadratic equation is in the shape of a parabola which can either face up or down (if x is squared in the equation) or face left or right (if y is squared).
To graph a quadratic equation, we need to know some essential parts of the graph including the vertex and the transformations. The vertex of a parabola is the turning point of the parabola. It is the point on the parabola at which the curve changes from increasing to decreasing or vice-versa. The transformation can be a vertical/horizontal shift, a stretch/compression or a refection.
Given a quadratic equation in the vertex form i.e. y = a(x - h)^2 + k, the vertex of the parabola formed by the equation is given by (h, k). Knowing the vertex of the graph and the parent graph, we can then apply the required transformation to obtain the required graph.
'h' in the vertex signifies the number of units left or right the the graph of the quadratic equation is shifted. 'k' in the vertex signifies the number of units up or down the the graph of the quadratic equation is shifted.

Math requires knowledge of fundamentals to advance. Good on anyone who is spending extracurricular time to reinforce concepts. By that same token, you should not be too worried when you struggle with a new concept. It only means you need to practice it and its precursors!

I wish you were my teacher back in the day. I have a question regarding the transformations, I understand how to shift x and y wiht in my graph, however, I don't quite understand based on the quadratic linear equation f(x)= a(x+b)^2+c , how do i find a?
@n11124
2 жыл бұрын
Substitute f(x) with a y coordinate point, and all the x values with the same point of where the y value is. So if I were to find a, I'd have to find a specific point on graph, and find those two x and y values and just Substitute them
How would you describe y= x+ 7. Is the graph of y= x where the slope is increased by 7? Or is the graph of y=c translated 7 units up?

I really appreciate your teaching sir it helped me a lot. but i just have a little confusion about graph's reflections..? if its multiplied by -1 out side of parenthesis. it reflects the graph vertically and horizontally if its multiplied inside of parenthesis. but -f(x)= -y and f(-x) is still equal to -y sir aren't they both reflecting vertically...? thanks for the video though.it was helpful.
@brianmclogan

everything you stated is correct and your last point the function you describe f(x)=x the vertical and horizontal reflections are the same. This is also true for any odd function such as f(x)=1/x or f(x)=sin(x)
