    To those who have trouble understanding why the middle section crosses the asymptote, the occurrence is called a cross-over point and is an unique exception to when a asymptote is crossed. You can find them by subbing in the H.A value into h(x) [HA is three in this case] and solving for x after supping in 3. If the answer is impossible e.g 0 = 16, then there is no crossover. But if there is a value for x. then that is when you have your crossover on your asymptote P.S the point is this question is x = 3/2

    the line you draw cannot pass the asymptotes, the line "tries" to get close to the asymptote but can never cross so it curves until it is parallel to that line.

    Daniel Whipple According to the function shown in the video, h(x) will cross the horizontal asymptote. To find out which point h(x) will intersect the HA, you know that HA = 3. Make h(x) = 3 and solve for x, and that should come out to be -3/2. So the graph intersects HA at the point (-3/2, 3). However vertical asymptotes cannot be crossed. Otherwise the function becomes undefined because the point would make the denominator equal to zero. Lastly, the graph indeed gets closer and closer to asymptotes in cases where the graph does not intersect it, but it is NOT PARALLEL to the asymptotes. it becomes only infinity closer and closer but never touches it.

  • @LILADOWNS

    @LILADOWNS

    You have to check: as x approaches -5 and 1 from the right and left, and see which infinite way the graph will be heading. you have to plug in a number as closest possible to -5 from the right of the asymptote, and as close as possible from the left and see whether the outcome is negative or positive. You plug in these numbers to the function then you see what the outcome is. If it's positive the graph goes infinitely up, and if it's negative it'll go infinitely down. It's easier to show you on paper though. The guy in the video went through this problem fast, but overall a good job.

  • @amrojjeh

    @amrojjeh

    You can pass Slants and Horizontal Asymptotes, but you cannot pass Vertical Asymptotes. Vertical Asymptotes - VA is the line at which the function would become undefined, and that is by the denominator becoming a zero. This is why you can never cross a VA, it is because it is undefined. A horizontal or a slant Asymptote is a bit different, however. HA (and slant) describe the END BEHAVIOR of the graph. The end behavior is simply what the graph will look like after some million points later. Which means, that it is no big deal if it crosses it, in fact it is common for a graph to cross, especially when it is near the origin of the graph.

    One thing I'd like to mention is that graphing these types of functions is _really_ easy if you use limits. For instance, you find the vertical (if any) horizontal asymptotes and look at the limit of f(x) as x approaches that vertical asymptote from left and right. This will tell you the behavior of the curve.

After an strenuous and agitating 10 minutes of looking through online CALCULUS notes because SOMEONE forgot to explain themselves and thus using 10 minutes of my time that could have been spent better else where, I have figured out why. I believe that in the middle portion of a graph created in between 2 vertical asymptotes, the horizontal asymptote can be crossed. (the horizontal asymptote can not be crossed on the parts of the graph to the left of the most left vert asymp and to the right of the most right vert asymp). This is because the definition of a horizontal asymptote is that the y value approaches the asymptote but never crosses the asymptote as you approach x = negative or positive nfiniti. So the graph can do whatever it wants in the middle.

    why cant the 'middle piece' cross the horizontal asmyptote? a rational function can cross a horizontal asymptote (but doesnt always). it will never cross a vertical asymptote though as that is where the graph is undefined. people tend to think of asymptotes as electrical fences or something. they are not. other types of functions (not rational functions) will also touch their vertical asymptotes.
