Grant's Getaways: Newberry National Volcanic Monument
When the mood to move strikes my family, there’s no better way to celebrate summer than packing up and moving out toward our annual camping trip at the Newberry National Volcanic Monument near Bend. It’s a chance to leave busy U.S. 97 behind and follow the lonesome trail high into the alpine reaches of the spectacular Newberry Caldera and my favorite high lakes called East and Paulina.

That's awesome! I went there with my host family last weekend. I love and enjoy my exchangeyear here in Oregon so much!
Been there... Done that, twice! That shot of obsidian looks to be the same piece that I photographed a couple years ago.
The peak that used to be there was around 14,000 feet high, Oregon's tallest.
From the peak look south and you will see Fort Rock .

It's not very good. I would not come here from Bend.
