At this point, a modern spiritual successor would be the best bet. Look what they're doing with Wild Arms and Shadow Hearts. Those are beloved series!

Thank you for showing your love for this series! Grandia 1 is on my top 10 list and has been a very special game to me for most of my life.

Grandia 2 was the first game I've ever obsessed over and I still love going back whenever I need a little spark of nostalgia. 💜 Gorgeous game. Amazing characters and story.

Grandia 2 has one of the best soundtracks in a JRPG. I could listen to that battle music on repeat.

Grandia 2 so much nostalgia for it's my childhood, will always hold a special place in my heart :)

I agree, Grandia 2 was one of the first jrpg's that I played in the early 2000's. This game got me into jrpg's and today is still one of my all time favourite games! It's so close to my heart as well.

I remember my dad buying me the original grandia as a child, I loved it. a few years later I saw grandia 2 in a bargain bin, having no idea there even was a 2 at the time it was an instant purchase. Sadly we never got a release of 3 over here in the UK but from what i've heard I didn't miss much.

The original grandia and lunar silver star story are what I think of anytime some asks what a JRPG is. For me they were childhood defining!

I wish the previously released physical version of the collection on Switch wasn’t limited…

I received a copy of Granda II from a then boyfriend, now ex, on my birthday. I'd never heard of the series before that. I've played through Grandia II about 10 times because the voice cast is so ridiculously stacked with iconic and legendary talent. I mean, it's fun, the combat is exciting, and the characters are cool, but Cam Clarke, Jodi Benson, and Jennifer Hale in the same party? YES, PLEASE.

Hi David! Grandia 1 and 2 are definitely a couple of my fav old school rpgs. The battle system was pretty darn cool. Being able to make an enemy miss their turn was unique for the time. Thanks for another great video and have a blessed day!

My only experience with the Grandia series is when I watched your let's play of the first game a few years ago. The series is definitely on my list to check out.

Awesome ranking! I managed to pick up the Grandia HD Collection for Switch a couple of weeks ago, so I'm looking forward to sinking my teeth into this JRPG series!

The first Grandia is and will always be one of my favourite RPG. Such a sense of aventure, wonder.... Great story, even greater character (and a ❤️ slight crush for Rapp when I was a teenage ahah). I still play it now and then, a true classic !

I never played these games until they came out on Switch but I was pleasantly surprised at how good of a story the first Grandia had

I'm going to make time to replay these soon - I haven't played them since they first came out, and I LOVED them (at least the first two... The third came out when I wasn't playing games as much). Loved hearing your thoughts on all these!

Just had to add that prior to this video, I had no idea you could warp back into waypoints in dungeons in Grandia Xtreme, and I'm almost 20 hours in. My life just got so much easier. Thank you, David!

Yo brother hope you're well. Got to be honest, I see the serious work you've put into working out. Congrats on being a beast! I know how hard it is to get your body like that. With that aside, I appreciate your work on the channel and honest opinions. This is a good list. Can't believe I never played these, that I can remember. I was too stuck on The Shining Force games and couldn't let them go lol.

I played grandia 2 like 5 times on PS2, PC and Switch. Oh well, time to replay again, let's rock that abysmal hard mode!

I prefer the first game to the 2nd. Yes, 1 is a little rough around the edges, but it has so much creativity and heart. The 2nd games biggest letdown for me was was just battle variety. It felt like every random encounter was the same fight over and over for 80% of the game. I used the same moves, and there were only a few enemies in each zone. The battle system had so much potential, but lacked the content to make it sing.

Great list! I need to play more in the series, I've only played the first one and I loved it!

Grandia’s combat blew me away as a kid. I can’t believe no other JRPGs have borrowed this series fantastic battle system. (If I’m wrong someone please let me know so I can play those games ASAP 😂)

There are games that are similar at least like One Piece Romance Dawn and at least some of the Neptunia games.

I think the list is spot on wouldnt change a thing. Ive been praising the Gospel of Grandia 2 for years now and how good the Story and Characters are and how many emotions i get while playing I picked this game up randomly on the dreamcast back in the day and it came with the Soundtrack in a dual Jewel case and it is one of my favorite soundtracks of all time i play this game all the way through at least once every 2 years!

Grandia 2 was my first game in the series. Ryudo was that guy, straight business. 3 I got from a friend in middle school made it to the end and I couldn’t finish because it would freeze at the final boss.

Thanks for the series review, I understand now why they opted to leave 3 out of the HD compilation lol

Almost spot on my list. I’d only switch 2 and 1. While I loved 2, 1 will always hold a special place in my heart for the character interactions and Justin’s overwhelming never say die attitude. Also the best video game romance I’ve seen.

2 is my favorite but I still want to hang out and chat about jrpgs with you sometime!

Grandia 2 is my favorite hands down. I never even knew there was a gba game. Hopefully one day we will get a new Grandia.

Can't wait to play these games again. I've had a bit of a gaming depression since last year where I finished Sea of Stars and then got the platinum for it and Diablo 3, but haven't really played anything since, but with the HD collection I might finally get back into the game.

Sadly Grandia 3 is the only title in the series I played and I loved it back in 06' lol but, i since then have purchased extreme and 2. I will definitely pick up the new upcoming collection! Great vid as always Dave!! 👍

I think all 4 grandia games have there own charms, for the more hardcore players there is extreme with way higher lvl and stat caps, and the randomized dungeons keep things spiced up, i think 3 is under appreciated it has a learning curb to it as well, your critical attacks can now send enemies in the air setting you up for epic arial combos, the most amazing passive skill to use and id use it on everyone is the berserker skill, it turns your regular attacks up to a 6 hit combo, and yuki has a unique skill that doubles his combo count called flash, and yes it stacks with berserker now yuki can pull off 12 hit combos! If u can get the timing right u can have 2 ppl start attacking then a third person use a critical hit, theres a passive u can get to increase the chance of knocking them in the air, and now u have both yuki and someone else already combing the enemy now yuki is adding another 16 hits in the air with a damage multiplyer! As well as the other person invloved in said combo u can pull off nearly 50 hit combos with the right set ups and its extremely satisfying when u do.

I bought xtreme for sale and crapped on it at first. It became the one I spent the most time with, go figure.

I love Grandia 1,2, and 3. I also love your channel. It's funny, some of the shit you say makes me laugh out loud more than a comedy podcast.

I love grandia! One of those stories where you will feel an actual adventure! It goes places! I remember as a kid when they are climbing the wall

To be honest 1 and 2 are like a virtual tie to me. They are both just so good but in their own ways but if I had to pick one, 2 would have the slight edge. Ryudo is just such a cool character and his story arc is plain awesome.

Grandia was one of the first games I had on the PSX along with Spyro 1 and Triple Play Baseball. Unfortunately I never got to play it because the disk was broken by my dogs at that time :/

I also agree i love the story of 2 and Ryudo is such and awesome and unique protagonist, i definitely have used his name in games that let u make your own names for characters since i was about 12 years old lol

I would still put the original over 2 personally. The feeling of adventure and exploration hasn't been matched in another rpg.

All pros to you for talking about Grandia but I want to note that the original Grandia was released on Sega Saturn first as an exclusive. It was very important for Saturn players who did not have FFVII.

grandia 2 was one of the first jrpgs I actually beat when I was 13-14 and still holds a special place in my heart enough so where I'm playing through it again as I write this and I know alot of people don't like grandia 3 and I understand the issues with the consistency of the story and I also hated when alonso and yukis mom left the party really sucked but all in all I enjoyed grandia 3 still but 2 is defiantly my favorite!

Always enjoyed Grandia 1 and 2 for the PS1 and Dreamcast good times enjoy all your work David aka Mr JRPG

Grandia 3 Looks awesome would Love to Play a remaster

The first game is still one of my favorites and is the best in the series as a whole story wise at least as Grandia 2 has a weird final battle and ending that is still baffling me to this day. The only thing I remember about Grandia 3 is that song by Miz - in to the Sky been stuck on my head for around 2 decades now.

I loved Grandia because it reminded me a lot of 90s adventure anime like Slayers or Trigun. I loved Grandia II as well but I was a bit disappointed with it because it was darker in tone. It's very rare to find a JRPG that is lighthearted but also done really well and to be honest most JRPGs tackle the same typical darker elements and I just kind of grow numb to them after a while. The closest game in recent years to Grandia I would say would have to be Ninokuni. However, I also consider the Wild Arms series to be enjoyable in the same way. To me wild arms is kind of like a sister series to Grandia. Add Skies of Arcadia to that too. I really miss adventure anime in general though.

I knew it was going to be 2 and 1 in the number 1 and 2 spots. I just had no idea which would be which. Everyone who had a Saturn hoped it would get a US or Europe release back in the day but it never happened.

i know some people dont like grandia 3 but i love this game its just fun and animated. and yes 1 is known to be the best and i cant disagree with that but its the feel of animated/ polygon style games i enjoy playing also .beside 1. 2 on dreamcast is my top go too, next to 3. and i wish that we would get more turn based rpg,s and not overloaded with tatics style rpg games. just good ole ATB,JRPG . new and old style turn based rpg,s

The worst thing about this series was party members leaving. It makes you feel bitter towards them if they replaced someone you liked. I took awhile for me to warm up to Tio since Roan was my magic nuke.

Leen and Tio are still my favorite RPG-Characters. So there is maxiumum love for that Series and I hope that Grandia gets a new Entry soon.

grandia xtreme was the most fun when entered a ruin only once unless improved with all bosses being the goal it added a survival like logic to the gameplay but once you enter the boss must be defeated

This is a tough one! Love “Grandia 1&2” sooooo much! I have the HD remasters on Switch AND Steam! 😂 “Grandia X-Treme” was pretty fun back in the early PS2 days also. But “Grandia 3”, eh…

Your order is exactly the same as mine XD G3 had such an amazing battle system by the endgame. It just sucks it suffered so much from bad story and characters. And yeah, G2 was my favorite. Despite battle system not being as refined as 3, it was amazing and so was everything else.

I’ve honestly never played the second game more than a couple hours. Seems like a good time to play it with the HD collection coming out on PS

When will the other games come to steam? I’m playing grandia II now. I immediately sought out the newly released anniversary ost. The Granas church theme makes my brain nearly melt because it’s so beautiful. It was $56 I was happy to pay. Overall, if they were willing to to release the first two games on steam then the rest of them need to be released as well.

Grandia 3 is the gam that got me into the series.

I actually really like Grandia III, it’s second only to the original in my opinion and I consider it a hidden gem. Good list though!

If you wanna get more specific it's not actualy 5. The first 3 Grandia games, then the HD versions of 1 and 2 Grandia: Digital Museum (1998) Grandia: Parallel Trippers (2000) Grandia Xtreme (2002) Excluding the online one, is technically 8 titles.

Totally agree about Grandia 3. It was so good up until Miranda decides to abandon the kids to get her groove back. The other two characters suck, and you’re hit with uneven difficulty spikes.

I played grandia when it released but got distracted! Damn I need to finish at least the first one…

I bloody loved Grandia 1. I found a site a while back that had downloadable, fan made inserts and manuals for the Saturn, allowing you to print off your own and make your own fan-made physical copy in the style that it would have been in the 90's. I can't find it anymore. Shame.

Grandia 1 will always be my top 1, followed by Grandia 2. Never finished 3 and never played others. I like the first game so much that I even own the soundtrack vynils

My first experience with the series is Grandia: Extreme then Grandia. Never played any of the others, nor have I beat either of the 2 games I have played.

Grandia 3 is so overlooked.

My dream is that gem drops will do a remaster of Grandia like they did with star ocean

I'm playing through Grandia Xtreme for the first time, and actually really enjoying it, but I get the gripes. My main complaint, if anything, is that the dungeons retain the same exact layout every time. I was led to believe that they were procedurally generated, and was sad to find out that wasn't the case. I love Grandia 2, but I'll never forgive them for not letting me keep Mareg.

Grandia 2 on my Dreamcast… such a great time back in the day. Appreciate the video. I didn’t know about all the other games. This series seems to have gone the way of Star Ocean unfortunately.
