Not really a twist, church is always evil in jrpg

It depends. Sometimes the church is neutral, like the Dezolian faith in Phantasy Star... It can even be beneficial, like in Shining Force.

@@gejamugamlatsoomanam7716 That's not the twist. The twist is that Granas is dead. Up until that point the protagonists are under the impression that Granas is dormant and waiting to rise again and save everyone, when the truth is he completely sacrificed himself to save his people all that time ago. This then ties into Zera's motivations, who's not evil for the sake of evil. He was just completely broken by the despair that his god is dead and convinced himself that reviving Valmar was the only way to go forward.

The Japanese love making games where you question government and centralized religion. To them any in power must be questioned, be it your Emperor, President, Dictator, Pastor or Pope, because they know how a brainwashed people can commit evils in their name. Being atheist doesn’t necessarily make you godless, just not believing in any one else’s religious views. To me, I gave up on Man’s God and just accepted there is something higher out there.

@@manupontheprecipice6254 Same here, I stopped believing in the moral genie living in the sky that rewards you for being good, and punishes you if you're bad, maybe it works good on children, but a grownup knows that good and bad things happen regardless if people are good or bad, there's something greater than us? Almost definitely, can we ever hope to understand it? Maybe, but not by jumping into assumptions based on morals.

Haha. I love Pope Zera. One knows he's gotta be a bad guy from first meeting but, give the benefit of doubt. Not much to dislike about the game IMO. Of its time but I will always love it. Games like this got me through some of my darkest days.

@theOtter Battle between light and darkness..... Said/Heard/Say/Hear.... in Pope Zera voice lol :p He speaks the words, Valmar and Granas, in great way. But, we all know. Granas died and darkness, Valmar, prevailed xD At least till Ryudo, cleansed the shop.

That is one of the most pretentious and insulting things I have ever heard. Just because the antagonist I called pope and in a white clothing doesn’t mean this is reflective of Judeo Christian faith. This is a basic typical RPG story with a twist seen a mile away. The message about religion is nowhere near as complex as seen in final fantasy X or xenogears. There is absolutely zero sense in the lore. If Granas was defeated long ago, why would the overwhelming majority of that population worship the defeated God? Why would it’s followers yield magical powers? Why is the victorious God even sealed and needed revival? It makes zero sense. The story is one of the worst things I have ever encountered in an rpg. This game is only saved by its battle system.

@@jamesyu5212 "If Granas was defeated long ago, why would the overwhelming majority of that population worship the defeated God?" Because Granas wasn't defeated. He sacrificed himself to stop Valmar. He died, but Valmar was neutralised and broken into pieces. It was a pyrrhic victory. Moreover, the people have been taught that Granas did, in fact, defeat Valmar but was so weakened by this feat that he needed to seal himself away and rest. "Why would it’s followers yield magical powers?" Because light magic is a thing that exists and existed before Granas. "Why is the victorious God even sealed and needed revival?" If you're referring to Valmar then again. Valmar was defeated. You literally see that in this video. Granas collides with Valmar in a final fight. Granas is destroyed, Valmar is utterly ruined and breaks apart into pieces that fall to the planet below. In more simple terms, Granas pulled a kamikaze run on Valmar. "It makes zero sense." No, you just didn't pay attention.

Your comment is a profoundly stupid and ignorant statement. Truly embarrassing rubbish. Just because Zera is dressed as a pope doesn't mean that his character or his beliefs have anything to do with Christianity. To anyone possessing a scintilla of awareness and intelligence, Grandia 2's deities and religious framework are obviously fictional and bear zero resemblance to Christianity. To posit that they do is truly infantile, myopic and foolish. You're inserting your own rather glaring and contemptible religious biases and attitudes into the game and seeking validation, where there is none.
