Grandfather Mountain Circuit // Hiking the Tanawha, Scout, Grandfather (Ladders) & Blackrock Trails
Skip the hordes of people at the Mile High Swinging Bridge and hike the Grandfather Mountain Circuit -- the unofficial loop that stitches together the Tanawha, Scout, Grandfather (aka "Ladders Trail"), and Black Rock Trails -- plus some off-trail navigation -- and this will become one of your favorite loops you've ever hiked.
It may be the oldest and highest mountain on the eastern escarpment of the Blue Ridge, but Grandfather Mountain has far more accolades. There's the four-state view; the "sky island" forest of spruce and fir; the challenging ridge hike with four distinct peaks; the best views in the Southern Appalachian Mountains; and its claim to some of the highest surface winds ever recorded.
My favorite part is the four state-view that showcases the who's who of Southern Appalachian Mountains: including Mt. Rogers and Whitetop in Virginia; Beech Mountain, Sugar Mountains and the Linville Gorge in North Carolina; Roan Mountain and the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee; even Kings Mountain in the South Carolina piedmont.

In my opinion they are the best videos out there about hiking in the Eastern US, which is not a very easy subject for hiking videos as you don't necessarily get many easy "eye candy" shots. I'm so glad you found me. Thanks for checking it out. Whistlepig is another name for a marmot, a high altitude critter that I've always loved. Plus one of the guys that hikes in my group is chubby. He sort of reminds me of a marmot. But don't tell him I said so.
Great video and hike! I assume you could do this in the opposite direction? Would rather climb up the ladders than down them?

You can, but I wouldn't recommend going up hill through the rhododendron since there's no trail through that part. Instead, consider a shuttle hike where a car drops you off at the Black Rock Trail or higher up at the upper parking lot and do the Grandfather Trail.
