That film got me hooked on Formula 1! I was 9 years old when I first saw it in 1969, and it instantly became one of my favorite films ever. Rest In Peace Francoise Hardy 🙏

One of my favourite films. I loved F1 when I was a boy and idolised men like Phil Hill, Graham Hill, and Jim Clark. James Garner did his own driving for the film and impressed the real F1 guys who told him that he had what it took to be a successful driver himself. Great score by Maurice Jarre who wrote many memorable ones.

This was the best international racing movie, couldn't have been done better, earlier, and not possible ever again. The music always set the mood and having seen it umpteen times (I have my own anniversary DVD set---and a 43" flat screen TV about eight feet in front of my chair on which to view it), I can picture the scenes by the music playing. The only objection I have to the score is turning the main theme into a dance tune at Count Hugo's after race party.

Back in the 50s and 60s, films made for Cinerama would stay in their specialty theaters for at least a year - two years, if they were popular. We had a Cinerama in Boston, and my family saw Grand Prix at least 10 times each! It was so exceptionally well made, with most of the actors doing their own driving, which was worth the price of admission itself! When it left Boston, my sister and I saw it many times in the bigger local suberban theaters, then in the neighborhood movie house, then the drive-in, then, phew! - on TV. Did I mention that we liked it? 😂

Want to know a bit about how movies are made with special effects? When Grand Prix was made, Brian Bedford, who played Scott Stoddard, didn't know how to drive a car! He didn't possess a British driving licence. Now, that's acting! And special effects too!

Wow...the superlative score by the great Maurice Jarre (my personal favorite of his) of the single greatest film ever made about Formula 1 racing...or any racing, for that matter. This one had it all, and it was so beautifully and originally filmed, with a wonderful cast (with the exception of Eva Marie Saint, who I always thought to be about as pale and uninteresting as a leftover glass of warm-over skim milk; she didn't belong in this movie) and Frankenheimer's pure direction....it's never been equaled, and never will. I particularly love the cut scored for, and titled, "The Clermont Race", photographed as a marvelous visual racing ballet...incomparable. I love it, I love Maurice Jarre's haunting score, I love this film deeply. I will, as long as I live. MANY THANKS, VALDEZ244!!!

Actually Steve McQueen didn't miss the movie Grand Prix because he was filming the Sand Pebbles. John Frankenheimer told the story of how hard and long they worked to try and get McQueen into the part, but by that time McQueen's self-importance had grown too much for his own good, and he was demanding all sorts of access to the movie including it's final cut - Frankenheimer finally said NO, and they sought out and signed James Garner - and yes, he was that good a driver; even Jochen Rindt who was to become World Champion told Garner he could have won at Formula 1 - Garner declined because, remember this was the 60's, there wasn't enough money in it and he could do better making movies!

I am indifferent about gasoline, since it is polluting our beautiful blue green earth, and I would want to swap out polluting gasoline motor's, and every other type of polluting engine, with piezo electric quartz crystal motors. I love the courage, fortitude, strength, demeanor etc. etc. etc. that the Grand Prix driver's exhibit, palpably in spirit within themselves

I do hear undertones of Mr. Jarre's Doctor Zhivago (1965) themes just a year earlier. Some of the still photos here _had_ to be lobby cards for when the film was showing in the theater as they seem so familiar. The theater where I saw Grand Prix (1966) when I was ten is now the site of a sprawling supermarket. My favorite seating area in that theater is where the supermarket keeps refrigerated dairy items as best I can determine.

Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia's quotation: "Shot on location at the Grand Prix races throughout Europe, using 65mm Cinerama cameras, the film starred James Garner and Eva Marie Saint. The making was a race itself, introduced methods of photographing high-speed auto racing that had never been seen before, mounting cameras on the cars, at full speed and putting the stars in the actual cars, instead of against rear-projections, the film was an international success and won three Oscars, for editing, sound and sound effects"

The 65mm cameras were manufactured by the Mitchell Camera Corporation. Cinerama was a trademarked name, and their process employed various Panavision ® camera lenses, advertised as Ultra Panavision 70 [anamorphic lenses] or Super Panavision 70 [spherical lenses]. By the time "Grand Prix" was filmed the 3-film, 3-projector system had been abandoned.

I used to have this on an LP. My favorite track was The Zansvoort Race [Scott's Comeback]. I have listened to the Suite you have posted it seems like a good portion of the track is on there but cuts off before the car audio begins and the the music explodes back in to finish the song. I remember three tracks with the car audio's on it. Well that's the way I remember it. You couldn't post that track would you?
