As much as the Tarkin Doctrine is criticized, it actually make a lot of sense if properly implemented. However, because of how the Empire was run and the type of people that ran it, Imperial leaders were far too heavy-handed in their use of force. Tarkin himself fell victim to this. In A New Hope, he says that destroying Dantooine would not effectively demonstrate the Death Star's power, but I believe he had it backwards. The Death Star was designed as a weapon of terror, not as a weapon of war. The smart thing to do would be to publicly destroy Dantooine, a fairly backwater planet, and threaten the same to Alderaan. This way, even if people might doubt that he'd actually do it, they can't be sure. Also, by destroying Alderaan, a widely known and respected Core World, Tarkin proved that the Empire didn't care for the wellbeing of its citizens, only about asserting dominance.

One thing I don't get about it in general is that when dealing with the rebellion who use fighters and smaller warships like corvettes and the odd frigate, Tarkin who already has capital ships that outgun virtually everything else in the galaxy desides to slap more turbo lasers on the ships rather than counter the actual threat of fighters with laser cannons. Its almost like he wanted the rebellion to win.

@@mygod5500 "...but at the end of everything Vader and Palpatine was going to kill most of the people to have Sith like fighters in the Empire." First of all, beautiful grammar... Much goodness. If that were actually the case, I would ask you to provide me with sources to support that claim. I wouldn't even care if it was material from Legends continuity. But, I don't need to ask for proof because I know that what you claimed is completely false. Palpatine, as well as most Banite Sith, were against having multiple apprentices or employing a large number of dark-side users because they wanted to avoid inadvertently creating rivals. While Palpatine may not have held most people who weren't attuned to the Force in high regard, he deeply respected individuals such as Thrawn, Tarkin, and Sate Pestage and thought that the average imperial citizen was inherently easier than Force-sensitives to manipulate and control. He had no intention of permanently increasing the number of Force-users in the galaxy, especially not Force-users trained in the ways of the Sith. As for your final comment about how the emperor wasn't going to choose Tarkin over Darth Vader... Maybe not. But, he saw Vader as nearly as expendable as high officials like Tarkin (i.e useful to a point), and let's not forget that Palpatine had ordered several assassination attempts on Darth Vader's life and sought to replace him due to his failure and the injures he sustained on Mustafar.

"Sir the Rebels are attacking in a number of snub fighters". *Tarkin* "Launch all Ties, Launch _all Ties_ . Have them intercept the rebel fighters, and analyze their attack pattern, see if we can determine what their target is? Galen Erso didn't go to all that effort just to give the rebels this stations specifications, there must be a vulnerability somewhere, damn you Krenic". [Tarkin smiles to himself, destroying Scarif base just to get rid of his political rival had been a strategic mistake, he could see that now. They had no way of knowing what the rebels had discovered and taken. But he could at least use the dead Krenic to blame for all of his own oversights]. "Oh and try to tractor in some fighters, Lord Vader can interrogate the captured pilots afterwards and we can see what they were aiming for, and rectify it. Turbo lasers may have trouble targeting snub fighters, but tractor beams have no such issue, at least some of the 768 emitters on this station can snare us some prisoners to _'debrief'_ . Have our support ships keep blockading Yarvin to prevent rebel ships fleeing, but have them pull back before we fire, so they don't get caught in the blast. And get them to launch any Ties they have to intercept the rebel fighters and defend this station." *Imperial flunky* "Yes sir, right away sir". *Tarkin to himself* "The reliance on snub fighters, we have to counter that, or this rebellion could prove troublesome… hmm. Retrofit this station with as many heavy quad laser cannons as necessary, same with the Star Destroyers. That Thrawn fellow has some ideas about hunter killer teams and hyperspace equipped Ties. I should champion that, he's no threat to my position being non human, but if I co opt him I could share in his success and claim him as my protege. A adjustment to my strategy may be required, well, the universe of full of dead men who remained inflexible in the face of changing threats, I won't be one of them". *Out loud* "Status, how many rebel fighters left? How many have we captured? Countdown to targeting solution? Signal the blockading fleet to withdrawal. That trench? Of course! Well concentrate all fighters in that area, park a shuttle in front of that exhaust port. Any nearby ship with a gun to that area, we must stop them at… What ? All of them destroyed, good. How many captured? Red squadron? I don't need names, Lord Vader will see to them. Prepare all reactors for firing.… This day shall be remembered for the death of the Empire's enemies at my hand. *_Fire_*

This clears up so much that the films just assume the viewer knows. After watching most of the series I had no idea what was going on, just that the basic plot was a coup then a rebellion. The Star Wars filmmakers (all of them, over several decades) seriously dropped the ball on that whole ''Telling a story'' part of making films.

I always thought that the new trilogy should have focused on what happens when the Light side wins out completely and its aftermath, it can smother and become oppressive in itself and in the 2nd one a "Life Sun" could have been developed inspired by the death star it could fire a Ray that could Spark the creation of life on a dead World or moon with an atmosphere

May I point out that Tarkin essentialy gave up on Deathstar years before its construction and relegated project that was failing (in his opinion) to Krennic? Its quite obvious when he talks with Thrawn about the Defenders. (He would like the deathstar if it was operational - that is true, however he did not believe it was possible until Krennic fired it.)

Also, have you ever faced an asari commando unit? Few humans have...) Battlestar Galactica - William Adama (because gritty, stoic, no-nonsense military leader with flaws who helped save humanity) Game of Thrones - Tyrion Lannister (b/c I too have a weakness for cripples, bastards, and broken things...) The Expanse - Chrisjen Avasarala (b/c political grandmaster of a UN Secretary General, also brilliant acting by Shoreh Agdashloo)

The real villain of the Star Wars Universe. Sure, Palpatine wanted power and control, but Tarkin was a true sociopath. Without him, the Empire would be less oppressive and far more efficient. His governance alone made the Rebellion look appealing to so many, and caused many Imperial governors and officials to mimic his despotic tendencies.

Was he the real villan ? No. It was Palpatine who started galactic scaled war resoulting in deaths of dozens of people just to gain power. He and his master threw off ballance of the Force. He ruined Maul's and Vader's lives just so he could have apprentieces. He allowed Tarkin to do what he did even tough his one word would stop it.

@@azoorfox9683 As a staunch supporter of the CIS Separatist movement, and its better-organized senate, as well as an open denouncer of Rebel Alliance Terrorism, I have to say you need to reconsider your accusations. One can be critical of the Empire's Body Politic, as well as disliking the radical extremism of rebellion. An Empire forged under Count Dooku as Emperor, and not Palpatine, would have created the order and security of the Galactic Empire, keeping the Oligarchs of the Trade Federation, Techno Union, Banking Clans, and Commerce Guilds under control. The governance of an Enlightened Despot is a fair alternative to the Republic's corruption and gridlock. Separstist ideals being the foundation of the Empite would have possibly prevented a need for an Iron Fist. Additionally, the Droid Armies would provide ample support to the Stormtrooper Corps and greater Galactic Military, especially in inhospitible lands such as Mimban, Sullust, or Dathomir.
