In a previous episode you asked if garp was a pirate before he was a marine. Not a spoiler but a cool bit of trivia related to that question, oda wrote two stories before one piece called romance dawn which i guess were early concepts before one piece and they pretty much cover the romance dawn arc (first episode of the live action). In romance dawn v1 the person to inspire and give luffy the strawhat was shanks. In romance dawn v2 the pirate to inspire luffy and the one who gave him the strawhat was garp. At some point oda finalised it to have it as shanks and the romance dawn arc of one piece was born

As others have said a later part of the manga goes in depth into the oppression faced by fishmen in the one piece world, this arc originally didn't really touch on it. I think they added in to the live action to tie it in better with that later arc Basically, Arlong is a tyrant and a bully. He was too weak to actually do anything against the people and systems that he hated, so instead he picked on the weak who had done nothing to him There are many many awesome and courageous fishmen which we will see later but Arlong, like most of the other pirates we see in this story, is simply out for himself. Even so, when it gets recontextualized later it's somewhat sympathetic to how he got to that point

I know they talked about slavery and bad things like that. But when I looked at the fishmen, I saw fish. There are fish with big lips. Carp, Groupers; there is even one called Sweetlips! And when I first saw Arlong in the show, I definitely saw Sawfish. Maybe I am just ignorant, but I saw the Fishmen being represented as actual fish.

You have to take on consideration that they are not the only fishmen and that they are a extream pirate group. And they show it to you in two instances, the fishman working at the restaurant and the mention Jimbei, one of the warlords of the seas. Also, the characters are to resemble fish from the ocean, that is why the have the characteristics they have. You see more as the adventure progresses in the anime or manga, hopefully in the live actions as well.

The persecution of the fishmen is very real in One Piece. The large lips is because he is based on the archer fish. It has prominent lips. In the animé there is a lieutenant which is a mirror to Luffy's crew. The archer fish is the one for Usopp. They cut the one for Zoro who was an octopus. The other thing is this is obviously Japanese and North American prejudices and mores are not the same there as here.

Good to have your perspective as a poc, Lindsay. I agree that the optics of having all of the fishmen here be villains lashing out over past slavery is not great. In the original story, the fishman slavery angle is not mentioned here at all, and Arlong is simply presented as a bigot. It's only later that we learn what has been done to fishmen so that we can develop sympathy, and later parts of the story have the crew fight for justice for them. In this adaption, they chose to front load the seeds of those future storylines. Hopefully that will strengthen those parts of the story in the future, but I think it weakens these two episodes a little. Glad you have enjoyed over all! It's an increadible first season of television and a fantastic adaptation of the East Blue Saga.

Hi there! Thank you so much for your comment, and for providing context on how it plays out in the manga. From the way you're describing it, I can see how the Fishmen storyline would play differently than how it was portrayed in the Live Action, and I wish they would have kept it that way! Either way, my overall opinion of the series so far is very positive! I was really hesitant to give my opinion on the matter, as conversations of race can be very polarizing, so I really appreciate you hearing what I have to say and commenting from a place of understanding! ❤️

The Fishmen are all based on real fish, it doesn't really connect to mindset of stereotypes of human races and how they look. The fish actually look like that irl that they are based on. There are fishmen with a different mindset, Nezumi mentioned one and that's why Arlong lashed out at him. You are seeing the outcast ones with Arlong's crew that are bitter and have sour grapes. There's an entire arc/saga that deals with all this way later on.

04:18 There are definitely good fishmen but the writer intentionally didn't introduce them as his primary motive is always to make you hate the villains as much as possible. That's why villain designs are mostly exaggerated or ugly in the source material. Later on(by 4th to 6th season) you will see good portrayals of fishman and how different sides react to being oppressed by humans. You will also see arlong park being re-contextualized when we get to fishman island and understand why arlong was so hateful. You already did see a good/neutral fishman in baratie restaurant. Hope that helps :)

At this point of story you as a reader might believe that he will fulfill his promise. In the manga, there is more time dedicated to developing Arlong's character, and it becomes clear that his main ideology is centered around money. He values nothing except for money and believes that it is the only thing that gives him worth. Consequently, Nami's plan appears much more promising in the manga. Additionally, the reason why Captain Nazumi is the one who receives the money (rather than Arlong, despite his love for money and the substantial amount of 100 million) is because it allows Arlong to remain true to his ideology and not directly break his promise regarding money. However, this also reveals that deep down, Arlong doesn't truly believe in anything, and his previous philosophical speeches were merely a way to justify his crimes. In the manga, he is portrayed as a more complex character who ultimately reveals himself to be nothing more than a scoundrel

If you just want to dip your toe into the series before you just dive in, I'd say watch the "Breathtaking World of One Piece" by Strawhat V ( someone else in the comments suggested it and I second ). i agree on your points inregard to how the fishmen were depicted. There are definite elements of black coding used and that creates an issue when they are all depicted (except for the waiter at baratie, so 99% of them onscreen) as criminals vibing to hip hop and although they are fish and the physical traits match the fish, the trait also coincide with racist caricatures i.e nose lips etc that you mentioned that have been used to portay black people in the past (and even today in many anime artstyles). There are strengths to using oppression as a metaphor in fiction as its a sorthand to where we instantly know the fishmens struggle because we are familiar with miniorities (in this case black peoples) struggles in the western world post slavery. But at the same time when using that as a similarity you run into the issue of a negative depiction (in this case the arlong pirates) also reflecting negatively on the group that has inspired these characters (in this case black people). Ofc some people will say there is no connection but there is (very light spoiler - there is a martin luther king and malcome x equivalent to the fishmen way down the line in the series among other things. there is a clear influence there). My biggest issue is that we are told about the oppression fishmen have/had faced and yet our protagonists are constantly using fish slurs. kind of comes across as a bit tone def. over all i did like how arlong and the fishmen were done but things could have been done better i.e as you said, having a fishmen in the marines (at least more than just the baratie waiter acting as the 'model minority' archetype), and maybe a different choice of music (even though i did like the music haha). I'm sure if they get far enough into the series, the problems will be rectified just by having more diverse representation of fishmen but that doesn't necessarily change the now.

@@KennyandLindsayWatch the original creator is an older Japanese man and although he's pretty on point with societal issues he also misses the mark many of times too. It's up to the writers of the live action to rectify some of the issue while still maintaining enough of the source material as to not lose the anime/manga audience. I don't envy them. And don't worry, you're not crazy, many anime fans aren't very social aware or are pretty young and won't/refuse to understand where you're coming from. But you are right.

I mean, guys, Arlong is a villain, what did you expect him to say? It was already stablished in last episode that one of the 7 warlords of the sea (shichibukai), Jinbe, is also a fishman. The guy that was at the restaurant and half tried to confront Arlong at the Baratie was also a fishman. Also, too much projecting your own prejudices into the series, which I know is inevitable, but it just missleads you in the wrong directionr. The fishmen are not stereotypes of any real life human "race", they are supposed to look like fish, period. I get it is dificult to notice those details the first time you watch, though, and you've felt kinda force to give your opinion on the matter before actually knowing more about it, so it's okay XD. Other than that, great reaction, and I'm so glad you love Buggy. He's my favourite character, and sure, most people seem to like him quite a lot, but I've also seen people who really do not like him. LOL! Hi Kenny! Hi Lindsay! About Nami's mother death, YES that was bad developed even in the manga, no excuses! To the point that a doctor (a character from the village) told Nami and her sister to run from the island and let Bellemere behind to pay her bills. It was ridiculous when you imagine kids with 6 and 8 years old running off in a boat without any sail expertise. Well... Bellemere (Nami mother) call out and asssumed her children in this weird way. Talking with other fans sometime ago I sugest that will be better if Oda would make Nami and her sister as fishmen hostages, and then without other way out, At this Bellemere naturally could say she was their mother. I just hope you both start to watch the anime. Little by little. Firstly to cover this part you have watched in live action. I don't fully agree. Saying the kids running off on their own to save themselves is a bad storyline is bad if you look at it from the perspective of a mature story aimed at a mature audience, but these were the early beginnings that were 1000% focused on the target demographic.. and when have you last seen kids be reliant on adults as a theme in these kinds of stories? They are almost always meant to shine and be independent, and in their own way pushed to become the better adult. The story involving Bellemere was a lot more detailed in the original and anime adaptation compared to the live action. It had this subplot where they were forced to part after having a huge fight, whereas the live action had them make up after the row. It showed Bellemere as a far more flawed person trying to grow beyond her own natural violent and non-nurturing inclinations. One Piece obviously still caters to its young audience in many ways, but as its target audience grew older, Oda also added more elements and complexity so that it would continue to appeal to them. To be fair, it was probably always intended to become complex given that this is his life's work, but there is no denying that any manga author has to prove himself, and it was this arc that would make a lot of people fall in love with the series for the first time.

@@Aviertje Sorry but I disagree with you. Yes oda made a good plot on Nami background, but this don't change the lack of logic at this part. Nobody is perfect and the author failed at this little piece of his work. He even gave the argumment of Bellemere don't have a family certified at village documents and Gen-san gave an excuse for the plates and glasses over the table. Obiously all the kids have to do was remains hidden until the fishmen go way. This is pure logic. When Bellemere call their kids she condened not only herself but her own children! Did you not notice? Bellemere could pay that month, but and about the others? How suppose Nojiko and Nami would pay monthly that tribute being kids? That's the "too puhed" bad end that poorly justified her actions. "Go on daughters! Live just this month because I have fail to be clever to deceive the fishmen". So, I don't think it was a good development. Now, if Nami and Nojiko were cauggt, THEN would make perfect sense Bellemere to save both.

I'm guessing the people who wanted you to talk about it wanted you to notice how this manga, a genre that is sometimes considered basic and childish, faced complex topics like slavery and racism. I'm pretty sure that they didn't want you to play the offended card out of nowhere. Chew has big lips because they resemble the kind of fish he is. Try not to impose nor superimpose your stereotypes and cultural hangups on people, like the Japanese, who might not even have ever heard of them. Expecting everyone in the world to think like someone from the US is a form of racism, after all. Arlong is a bad guy because he chooses to be a bad guy, not because he's a fishman. We did see a honest working fishman at the Baratie, who was definitely not villainous. We did hear Nezumi talking about a fishman who is actually a warlord working for the government, which Arlong called a fool. There is a *MASSIVE AMOUNT* of story regarding the fishmen, their rebellion, their divide, and their reactions to racism, and it's handled beautifully and inspiringly, not unlike how the X-Men presented the issue with Magneto / Malcolm X and Xavier / Martin Luther King Jr. It's been hinted so far. It's not a concluded topic. Saying "I wish they had shown more of" something, as if you're judging a finished product, is unfair. You've now seen, after watching episode 8, an abridged version of roughly 90% of *THE PROLOGUE.* It was a bit less than that when you made that statement, though. The fact that *MOST* fishmen seen so far were villains isn't something to complain about. It's just a fact, a curiosity. And, if you think about it, most humans seen so far were villains too, after all. 😉👍

So first and foremost, appreciate the comment. Second, the fact that one of the first things you say is we are playing the offended card out of nowhere is EXACTLY why we didn't want to say anything in the first place, I get all your points, many of which we ourselves even made. I don't get though how you can say it faced topics like slavery and racism, and then right after say don't impose our stereotypes and cultural hangups on the people who had to deal with the slavery and racism, I am not sure you can really have it both ways. When we say we wish they had shown more of something, it is because we want context, we want more story not "oh they only showed us this much, so I know all about this story now" to say we are judging it as if it was a finished problem is just not true at all. You have the benefit of being way ahead of the story than we are, you have context that we simply do not have. We are very much looking forward to learning more about the fishmen, and all other potential creatures/races in this world. All of this to say, when we react to something and talk about it, it is how we really feel. We love learning more about stories as they unfold, and talking with the community in the comments....but to suggest we are "playing the offended card out of nowhere" is pretty unfair. If you are not comfortable facing complex topics like slavery and racism without imposing a stereotypical " You do not have the same opinion as me, therefore you are playing the offended card" then I am not sure what to tell ya. - Kenny Hey, thanks for the comment! I'm not superimposing any stereotypes or cultural hang-ups on anyone. A quick google search shows that the makers of the LIVE ACTION One Piece are American, and it's perfectly plausible to assume that their biases (conscious or unconscious) could have made their way into the show. Again, they're literally playing rap music in the background of pretty much all of the scenes featuring the fishmen. I don't presume to know how the Japanese manga or anime depict the fishmen because I haven't seen it, which I also stated in the intro. All forms of art speak differently to the people consuming it, which is why my experiences as a mixed race American, may yield a different opinion than many of the other people who watch this show. - Lindsay

My favorite part about this comment is when you say the topic of racism is handled beautifully and inspiringly, when it's handled by 2 cartoon white men LMAO

This is the worst series in the world, it has no connection at all, and it lacks a lot of important details that they never used. As for the real One Piece, the anime One Piece is just the best, nothing else, and the talk is over. 😏😏☹☹☹🖕👎👎🖕👎🖕🖕🤫🤫🤫🤫🤫🤫🤫

Nah, the LA is good, the main difference is that it has less time to flesh out the story.

The showrunner of this show is a black dude, he or with his approval made the fishmen black coded by the music choices, mannerisms, speech pattern with their script In the source material fishmen aren't black Black people doesn't have a monopoly in enslavement, all races of human have been enslave at one point in history.

I don't care WHO made the approval, that does not change my interpretation of how they were portrayed. As far as the source material goes, as I said, I have not seen any of the source material and even mentioned that there was a good chance that the LA handled it differently. As far as your last comment.....what does that have to do with ANYTHING??? I never said Black people have the monopoly on enslavement, in fact I mentioned my mixed race as being part native american. I am confused because you admit that in the Live Action the fishmen are black coded, but go out of your way to let me know that Black people are not the only ones that have been slaves??? You started your comment by telling me I was right, because the show runner did black code the fishmen Then you end your comment by telling me I was wrong to think it was just a reference to black people???? what?
