"We're an American Band"
The critics loved to hate them but the fans loved them and their shows, selling out big venues quickly. A pure power trio.

So true. I was able to see the originals many times live. They literally rocked a stadium everytime. That was a band one should have never missed seeing. The floor seats and walls kinda shook every time. They would play their hearts out, long concerts.

AMEN. 👍🏻👍🏻
A very under rated band that belongs in the R&RHOF.

Totally agreed. Cannot believe that they are not entered yet!

They are snubbed because they wont kiss the hall of fames ass, just like Ted Nugent or like Kiss finally did last year and got in! ..The rock hall is OWNED by a person who decides who he likes....I hate the rock hall...Steve Miller hates them too, look for it on youtube, Steve Miller Hall Of Fame!
This band opened several times for Led Zepplin. That was all because Zepplin’s manager “released” them because the crowd loved them.....a lot....🤣🤣 and he didn’t want them drawing attention from Zepplin. When they would play Foot Stompin Music you could literally feel the buildings shake. I was at several. That’s another good listen also!
One of my favorite bands of all times! It's fucking ridiculous they're not in the R and R Hall of fame!! Plenty more great songs bro!!!
"We're an American Band" is now a classic song from them!!
Great song, Great Band and Great Energy! Ok here is a suggested listen: "I'm Your Captain / Closer To Home"
You'll love "Footstompin Music" live, lots of organ, too.
Heartbreaker is another one of their songs that really worth the listen!

🤣🤣🤣. I take it you hate that song?
Oh yeah. We knew how to rock back in the day. Grand Funk put on a heck of a show. Glad you checked them out.
Love Me some Grand Funk! “I’m Your Captain/Closer to Home” is their masterpiece. Go for it!

I disagree. This is their masterpiece
I saw this band several times back in the day. Over sixty years or more, I've seen thousands of bands, some of the biggest names in history--but honestly, this was the best live band I ever saw. I looked forward seeing and listening to them every time. The perfect timing of the tempo changes, the unrelenting, driving beat, the vocals---wow. The best...
So damn funky even the microphone couldn’t stop moving!
Grand Funk...man that’s groovin, “I’m Your Captain/Closer to Home’, check it out, a GFR masterpiece.
Perhaps the greatest Jam of the late 60's. Farner, Schacher and Brewer are perfect examples of the hard working 12 hour practicing musician legends of the 1960's.
Some kinda wonderful will move your feet.
“We’re an American Band,” is the perfect song that explains the life of a band on tour. BTW they’re from Flint, Michigan, which is about an hour north of the Motown studio. Maybe some influence involved?
Heartbreaker live a must! Footstomping Music live a must!
They were young . This was live in front of TV studio , no audience just the crew . Dozen people. Impressive

In their 20's and early teens!
One of the great hard rock bands from the late 1960s to early 1970s. It is a total injustice they are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They sold millions of albums and had several gold albums.
In the early '80s GFR was on tour in Europe and they decided, on a whim, to give a FREE concert for US Troops stationed at my Kaserne in Schweinfurt. Army engineers built a stage suspended on 2 1/2 ton trucks and they brought in power from the nearby Hawk Missile site. Class Act. my fav of theirs is "In Need" off their Red Album.

I see them in Frankfurt in 1975.The show was worth more than the 30 Marks I paid to see that show!
Ya boy killing those drums i been waiting for this one
I knew you would love this song. Next you have to do "I'm Your Captain " live from Shea Stadium. You're going to love these guys. They should be and should've been in the RRHOF a long time ago.
Mark Farmer beads pure emotion. It spills and pours from his soul. You feel his real and raw intent for the story being told.
Their ages at this time 19 ,20, and 20
Afros and Jesus hair. LOL They have plenty more... I'm Your Captain, Into the Sun, Footstompin' Music, Mr. Limousine Driver... and of course their pop hits Locomotion and American Band. And that's just scratching the surface.
Can you believe they were only 20 and 19 years old?! That was their first year together as Grand Funk Railroad. This is my favorite musical performance.
I can't believe not 1 comment mentions Mean Mistreater another great song by GFR

Mean Mistreater is my fave GFR song.
Make me feel alright. Over nine minutes of non stop Grand Funk! This is what 1969 felt like! Loudest band I ever heard perform. They don't make rock and roll like this anymore! Sadly, later they did go commercial.
Great reaction. When these guys did this, I was on the other side of the world. So thankful for video. First time I saw this, I was blown away. Note: GFR is not in the Rock & Roll HOF.
Their concerts were extremely loud. I was just outside the concert hall during one of their performances when I realized that it's safer for my ears to listen from the parking lot.
"And that's what rock & roll is all about Charlie Brown" - Linus
I absolutely love this live performance, raw, gritty and passionate. Grand Funk Railroad put the fu in funk ☮️
I was 10 years old when this album came out. The cover photograph was so mesmerizing. I’d never heard bass like this before. For me rock and roll started with Grand Funk RR.

Mr.brewer is not human! 🌋
They are definitely FUNKY, but the are also a great hard rock band- PERIOD!
Actually this is 1969 but was written and recorded by The Animals in 1965/66. GFR made this song their own.
That was pure funk I can't believe it they had a drummer bass guitar player an electric guitar
Closer To Home was their most famous hit, I do believe. I saw them live . I think that was at Eastern Kentucky University, in 1971, or 1972. Loved their sound when they came out on tour.
When I entered the 1970's I was 13 years old...soon after, Grand Funk Railroad became my favorite band in the world and still is to this day. This performance is outstanding...one of the best live performances ever recorded on to You Tube! What is really amazing is that Mark and Don are 20 years old and Mel on bass is only 18...a 3 piece band so young producing this sound is just incredible!
Lotta big sound coming outta that 3 piece band, huh??😉
“Afros and Jesus hair” ....I love it! I’m 73 now and still love long hair on guys...guess I was imprinted in my youth 😁. You are on quite a roll today Chod. Some really good shit.
Every time, it's holy crap!
Mark Farner - beyond epic talent - sexy - his American Indian spirit shines through - the band - so underrated !!!
My hometown boys!!! Love them 💜 I used to listen to them practice in Craig Frosts garage on the way home from school! We were something like 14! 😂
Some Kind of Wonderful was always one of my favorites of theirs. My orig hometown band. Always thought of them when driving under the Grand Trunk RR bridge. Three men with such a rich sound was truly amazing.
Footstompin Music should be next.
Their song “Sins a good mans brother”, is the shit! Definitely a banger. Check it out C.

A great song and I only realised recently it was theirs. I always though Monster Magnet had written it! My bad!!
This was the song they were playing when structural engineers were called in to stop the shea stadium show for fear the stadium would actually collapse. and the song they were playing when the mighty Led Zepplin actually pull the plug in the middle of Grand Funks show.
Loved your reaction....these guys were pure funk...that's the way we rocked in the 60's and 70's....would love to see you react to Pink Floyd "time" .....I guarantee you that you'll live pink Floyd....
The thing about bands from Detroit is, they're ALL funky! The polka bands from there are probably funky. The ice cream trucks probably play funky music in the summer while they're selling cones. Even the change of pace for them "Bad Time to Be In Love" a great, great ballad, is driven by a groove that'll get you!
Seen them few times live. Never know how truly great they were. No sound recording can imitate the vibes, sonic concussions through your body, soul.
Great reaction to an awesome jam by three dudes from flint Michigan.
Had this album on 8-track ! Wore that sucker out .😁
One other side note about this performance in a TV studio with a relatively small audience the microphones were provided for them and not the ones they typically used in concert which is the reason for some of the screeching heard.
"Afros and Jesus hair... that's how you know it's going to be good music!" 🤣😂🤣😂 Best reaction comment in a minute!
I listened to Grand Funk Live! every day exactly 50 frickin' years ago..that and Happy Trails and Stand Up. And Spoonful off Wheels of Fire...every day, man..ate a lot of acid too whilst waiting to be drafted...
I still have a tough time believing that this is live. Even 52 years later, this is one of the absolute BEST live performances by any band that I have ever seen. Thank you very much for your reaction and review, my man.
1968, dear Chod. They were barely 20 here. It’s criminal that they never made it into the RRHOF. These guys were enormously popular. Loving your reactions as always.
At 66 I can say that GFR and Led Zeppelin were my 2 favorites back in the day. Early GFR is the best IMO, but knowing you like some organ, they brought that into the mix on the "Phoenix" album. Give "In Need", "Sin's A Good Man's Brother", "Mr Limousine Driver", "Nothing Is the Same", "I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home" and "T.N.U.C." (long drum solo) some love for starters. You won't be disappointed.
The hardest rock band of 1969! Flint, Michigan's finest! Grand Funk! They held their own against all the rest.
Great reaction to a great Band...From one Musician to another you know your shit!! You need to hear "HEARTBRAKER" MEAN "MISTREATER" and "CLOSER TO HOME" from "GRAND FUNK RAILROAD". . .✌OUT
song was written by Eric Burdon & Chas Chandler-recorded by ---the Animals in 1966--GFR first did it in 1969
I come tumblin their best song, closer to home their best album. Wonderful band.
Grand Funk..."Heartbreaker" You'll love it!!!
they were the best bad I ever saw live in the 70s. So many bands in the 70s had the talent, playing, singing, writing. Mark did not write this but wrote most of the other bands. I'm your captain (closer to home) was very popular especially with the military in viet nam.
Having heard a lot of GFR songs, the intensity and energy of this song and this particular performance is unlike anything I've ever seen before. So much so that, when the song was over, I wanted MORE!
Your right. Older songs drove them to greatness. Paranoid, and the 1st one On Time
They do a song called Paranoid that’s heavy metal fuzz as shit. Check out the studio version, it’ll blow your headphones off.

Kerry, heavy metal BASS fuzz on Paranoid! Gotta LOVE a garage band from Flint, MI!😎
That was one helluva jam session. Loved it. Always loved this band.
Top 13 favorite song. Love this version. Love this group.
"Pure perfection" yes it is. Greetings and love from Finland.
My homies from my former city of Flint, Mi. I was lucky to have seen them when they were just getting started doing local gigs. As a side note, I have 2 cousins, one was a classmate of the drummer, Donny Brewer and the other had Brewer's mother as his teacher. They got their name from...Grand Trunk Western Railroad...that was written on the side a railroad overpass there in Flint. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Funk_Railroad
One of my favorite performances from Woodstock . Great observation of The Awesome Santana.
I came home from Vietnam in 1972. The 1st show I went to was Grand Funk. They crushed it.
The best ever the early years !
Same era...Zephyr. with Tommy Bolin ( who you listened to) "Cross the River " so soulful!
"Mean Mistreater". Seriously.
I’m so exited! I LOVE this song!
Best performance ever!!! Love it!✌️💚😁
First rock band in the world..3 personal only..now VOB from Indonesian the warning takes over for this generations..powerrrrrr bro ❤❤❤
Live version of Heartbreaker will blow the roof off. Grand Funk was amazing.
I wish GFR would get back together again all original member's,all BS but aside they can to it, we need that vioce again.come on Don & Mel LETS DO THIS !! LOVED your reaction Brother, they were a great Trio.
3 piece band from Flint Michigan that i used to see in the local teen night clubs around 1970. They being from near Detroit you can hear the Motown influence in their music.
My fav live album of all time. Bass rumbling so good. #ToolArmy
GRAND FUNK RAILROAD, "INSIDE LOOKING OUT"... GROOVING IN THE 60'S, AND INTO 70'S... MORE, "FOOT STOMPIN MUSIC", "HEARTBREAKER", "I'M YOUR CAPTAIN/CLOSER TO HOME", "SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL"..."AMERICAN BAND".. "SHINE ON"...
I saw Grand Funk Railroad perform this live in Kansas City in 1970. Its my favorite Grand Funk Railroad song.
Raw! Raw! Raw! Masterpiece!
"Sin's A Good Man's Brother " , is another Great One from GFR !
Lived next door to Mark's sister for years. Went to Travers city for a party once at his house. He cooked a steamship round. 40 lbs of beef.
I think a good indicator is when even the microphone is jammin' out. Classic!!
Now you hit right up my alley. You wanna hear the funny thing, this performance was in front of only about 3 dozen people. It was a show for radio and record execs to see how they were going to market Grand Funk. They didn't even have all their own equipment. The microphones were borrowed from the radio people, not even ideal for singing.
Afro's and Jesus hair? AHHH Too cool. Love it. LMMFAO
One of my top 3 favorite bands! A whole lot of sound from a 3 piece band. The bass drives the band! Great video!
Pure down and dirty unadulterated rock and roll!!
The very first concert I ever went to. I was 16.
I knew you would love it! 😉
Grand Funk Railroad rock and roll with a little bit of Blues thrown in
They should be in the Rock and Roll HOF!!!! What a trio!
Oh my Chod, now you have bought that ticket to Grand Funk Railroad and it is quite a journey. Again, just three members with a whole lot of real talent. Please try I'm Your Captain or Comfort Me. Thanks for the ride.
Mean Mistreater! Great song! Paranoid also on the Red Album Well all the red Album is top for me the best Grand Funk
