Don Brewer of Grand Funk Railroad | Artists On Record Part One
Grand Funk Railroad's sold-out show on July 9, 1971, at New York's Shea Stadium is famous for selling its 55,000 tickets in 72 hours - faster than the Beatles had in August 1965. That record at the home of baseball's Mets stood until the ballpark was demolished in 2008.
In this video, Don Brewer, the drummer of Grand Funk Railroad, takes us on a trip down memory lane as he recalls the band's iconic performance at Shea Stadium. With exclusive footage and behind-the-scenes stories, Don shares his experience of playing in front of 55,000 fans and how it changed the band's career forever. From the nerves before the show to the adrenaline rush during the performance, Don gives us a glimpse into what it was like to be a part of one of the most legendary concerts in rock history. Whether you're a die-hard Grand Funk Railroad fan or just a music lover, this video is a must-watch for anyone who wants to relive the magic of Shea Stadium.

Does he remember Mark being there at all ? 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 No Mark NO FUNK !!!
He remembers every detail? Does he remember that Farner wrote all the music except Inside Lookin Out? Does he remember that Farner was all over and owned the show? Does he know every real GFR fan would love it if this show was released on DVD? He'd never would have made it without Mark Farner?
Brewer should know by now the Mr Mark Farner was and Is Grand funk and although it took those 3 to create that magic it will always be known by the fans that Mark is GFR!

Farner is, no doubt about it, a Viking and a Native Indian warrior, reincarnated - just a badass who still looks great, etc. He's a beast
Brewers ego and greed ruined one of the greatest bands in American music history. Great drummer, terrible human being. Grand Funk should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Yeah... Now it's my turn... I USED to love all these guys but now... To hell with Don & Mel... Even if it's something Farner did or said or the fact that he went solo etc... Doesn't matter. As you can see from all the comments, MARK F FARNER was the one who gave birth to GFR and raised and fed it the songs it needed to grow and survive! I'll admit they were a great group but EVERY song at that stage of their career was a Farner composition... I LOVED the interview but for Don not to mention or express anything about how lucky he was to have met Mark Farner is ridiculous. Farner IS GFR! Mark GFR Farner! LONG LIVE MARK FARNER!!!!!

You've got that right.
A good musician to bad he's such a back stabber.
We all know what Donnie boy did, so I am not giving him any of my time until he says he was wrong and apologizes to Mark. Without Mark, Donnie would most likely be playing at the local VFW.

He rebranded GFR as a cruise ship lambda band, an abomination. Casts himself as the brains. And Donnie, Grand Funk Live was the Atlanta Pop Festival Aug 69, not Shea Stadium 71. It's like he wasn't even there.

New interview with Mark: kzread.info/dash/bejne/h66bxc18dtyqqbA.htmlsi=bRH8h-Mei2vuQK23
Don Brewer is a great drummer and one third of the band Grand Funk Railroad but what he did and is still doing to Mark Farner who will always be the heart and soul of the band, I don't care anything about what he has to say or listening to a watered down version of Grand Funk Railroad.
Got a last minute ticket to the Shea stadium show. Farner fan ever since.
I like hearing about the old stuff but Don's a dick for doing Mark the way he did. Unforgivable.
This guy is a snake in the grass.....
Don called the song Closer to Home but it's like you said called 'I'm Your Captain'. The song isn't called Closer to Home, that's the name of the album.

@@rickcappetto I'm sorry but the song doesn't have Closer to Home in the title of it. You must know that, look at the original vinyl album,. it is just called "I'm Your Captain".
The smile on Don's face talking about early GFR makes me think he realizes what a good thing they had back then. It's not too late to make it happen again. I'm a GFR fan from the 60's n 70's. Mark, Don and Mel breathed life into this band. Don's drums were the heart beat pounding in my chest. Mel's bass moved every muscle in my body and down my spine. Mark was the blood and oxygen and together they all breathed life into the magic that was Grand Funk Railroad. Not looking to hurt anyone's feelings but bring back the original GFR band and let the magic happen.

@@TerryKrysinski Brewer pulled an end around getting Mark to sign into making GFR a corporation and that was strictly for the fact that Brewer wanted to go on as GFR and he knew that was not possible with the current setup. He knows Mark would never let them tour with the name Grand Funk Railraod without him being in it, so he eased that contract in there making them a corporation where majority rules and Marks was outvoted 2 to 1. Come on Don, man up you got your twenty plus years and made tons of money, now do something for the fans that will save your legacy.
I saw GF shortly after the Shea Stadium show when they played a free concert for GIs in Schweinfurt, Germany at an airbase. The stage was a couple of flatbeds put together and was illuminated by 2 tanks with their spotlights pointed at the stage. Humble Pie with Peter Frampton as the opening act. I met Don a few years later and we reminisced about that show. Cudos to the homies from Flint Michigan.
They were the biggest band in America for a time. Eventually arena rock like Boston, Styx, Kansas all came out whilst GFR was having internal issue, but they are one of the staples of the classic rock era. Awesome bridge between Flower Power and Hard Rock, with very talented members, rocking the world!

I have NO respect for Don Brewer. What he has done..and continues to do regarding Mark and GFR....just hateful.

Don brewer was a great-great 3 pc drummer of a great 3 pc band who were better then CREAM n all other 3 pc bands n mark was gifted like don n mel they were n still a one of a kind band n also n this is important mark has forgiven don n says let's play 🎶 music n move on mark is in my opinion a great n honest person ❤ what a great group n 3 great 🎶 musicians n it's not don even tho he gets 90% of the bad nor mark i wish they could just play so we can relive the memories of "GRAND FUNK "😅
How could you Don….bit the hand that fed him….Grand Funk will always be Mark Farner …
Got to see 'em after his hair got that color! :) He had just won a best drummer thing and it took two guys to replace Mark, but the guy said the funniest thing about the bass player.. Weighing in at 4oo n 40 megawatts! He was the only bassist I can think of who followed the lead note for note!
One of my Favorites!
He said nothing substantive at all! WE WANT GRAND FUNK! WE WANT GRAND FUNK! The REAL Trio not Faux Funk!!
Don was/is really under rated. I learned to play drums listening to Dons tracks. He's the best.

I'm sorry about the band fall out, but as a drummer I can't say enough Good about "Don Brewer"!!!
You got it right
What else did Don say about Frank Zappa? It’s cut short. Never mind, I found it on the ‘Brewer reunion’ video!
4Q Don Brewer....NO FARNER NO FUNK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tell you what Brewer Has A Mass Quantity Of Crust To Even Do An Interview! My Opinion Is Brewer & Schacher Couldn't Deal With The Fact That Farner Created Majority Of The Songs Or For That Fact Take any Kind Of Leadership! Wondering How Bad Of A Situation It Could Be Not To Reunite! There's Been Bands In The Past To Where Band Members Were Hooking Up Or Cheating On Band Members Wives But They Still Reunited For The Respect For The Fans That Kept Them In Money & Fame! "Brewer & Schacher" Get Out Of Your Deadened Funk, Get Out There With A Reunion!!!! 🎶🎼🎵
😃✨✨✨✨✨✨✨👍 Thanks for the great interview.✨I have a drumstick Don handed me at a 2004 show in Paso Robles, CA. The other stick he handed to someone else on the other side of the stage✨💥

MARK FARNER wasn't playing with him at the time so, the stick isn't worth the money you spent on the ticket to see his grand funk copy band. Do yourself a favor and trash it. To true GRAND FUNK fans, the stick would be an embarrassment to have. If FARNER was playing with him at the time then, it would be worth it's weight in gold. Best to YOU

On a lighter note.. Why aren’t these guys in the R&R Hall of Fame?
Brewer destroyed a friendship and a legacy to make a few extra bucks. Very disappointing. And totally unnecessary.

No Farner no Funk !
All real GFR fans know Brewer took advantage and royally screwed Mark Farner in multiple ways. I really don't how he sleeps at night.
He needs Mark...The energy is not there any more since Mark was thrown out, and Mark doesn't sound the same without Don too..They need each other.

Im sure Farner isnt having money woes, neither Brewer. So illiminate the money facter. Put the poison and bad feelings aside,do some shows because personally, the die hard funk fans don't give a rats about GF of today alonside any new MF stuff. The clock is ticking, and not for long.Jim and Mark your shelf life is up for experation. Please work it out, for the fans...
