iono, i could be mistaken... but he wasn't aiming for emperor? I'm pretty sure he had concerns and actually disliked MANY things the Empire was doing, but his logic dictated that they had purpose as well as capability. when you also bring in the fact that he was semi protecting his species and culture, you can almost think of him as a loyal but rogue knight. even once his lord had fallen, he still stood for his oath and purpose.

Let me get this straight... The Rebellion spends years performing hit-and-run attacks on the Empire keeping them off balance slowly gaining strength until the Empire fell, and then Thrawn takes his 6 Star Destroyers and performing hit-and-run attacks on the Republic keeping them off balance and gaining more strength. Huh, good ol' Thrawn giving the enemy a taste of their own medicine. And with the stab to the chest, Nelson much? Except Nelson won in the end, but he died.

Problem was the creators of Thrawn realized they literally made a true anti-hero who despite worked for the Empire was a respectable, well popular and extremely efficient officer who actually was a shining example of what the Empire promoted it was supposed to be. Thrawn was intelligent, respectful, a real soldier and officer, he was SW Rommell and literally by his own hand nearly defeated utterly the New Republic by strategy and cunning. If he took control he likely would have been loved by both Imperial citizens and the newly re-absorbed new republic citizens. That's why the writers offed him or terminated his character shield. He became too powerful of a character that he threatened Jedi and Sith Characters who were supposed to be near demi-gods and here a Imperial officer who was near human with no Force powers was curb-stomping everyone and he had less resources to work with.

Which consist of 200 pre-Clone wars Dreadnought's, whose exact position had remained unknown until then. The New Republic managed to capture 15 of those ships, but Thrawn has already escaped with the rest. But he's already at war with the New Republic, so how will he find enough crew member's to man all these ships? The answer: Emperor Palpatine's underground cloning facility on the planet of Wayland.

If Thrawn led the Empire racism would have almost disappeared given Thrawn himself is a near human alien. He probably would have it as a authoritarian government perhaps similar to the GTU, if anything that's exactly the type of government he would approve of. Rebellions would be more difficult to rise up if people are comfortable and safe with a future to look forward to even if the government they are in is a little strict but not a overbearing monster. Any Rebellion that did rise up likely would have been crushed long before becoming a major threat and Thrawn likely would have used less violent means to subduing a rebellion if possible knowing violent action could create more. Education likely would be valued especially so. I can Imagine Thrawn pushing the arts and promotion of better work enviorments :P

As a Sith, Thrawn would be to brutal to be a good tactican. As a Jedi, he would care to much for his troops. The only mistake he made was, that he didn´t gave the Noghri the means to rebuild there planet. If he would have done that - maybe by telling them, that this new gear is better - they would have never betrayed him. Even if Laia landed there as she did, they would have stayed loyal since Tharwn gave them the means to rebuild there planet. I never understood why he did not do that.

I remember reading the Thrawn trilogy a few years back and loving it. Thrawn was a great antagonist that more recent stories have had a hard time living up to. What I think is unique about Thrawn though is that while Star Wars, both legends and new canon, is rampant with threat escalation (The Empire had a moon sized planet killer? Well now the First Order has a Planet sized system destroyer!), Thrawn was in many ways a de-escalation. He didn't have any special superweapons or a giant fleet from nowhere, and was in many ways a dark mirror of the Rebellion, resource deprived and fighting a far larger opponent, but making up for his shortcomings with better strategies and daring plans. Hopefully they can bring some of that back in the new canon. That Timothy Zhan has been given back control of Thrawn gives me hope, but beyond that I hope that Star Wars in general moves down a path that doesn't try to copy the past, only bigger, but instead focuses on compelling characters with well-explained motivations.

The trouble with Thrawn as a character, is that there is no way to beat him that will be satisfactory to an audience. He's presented as such a brilliant commander that there is no one who can match him and he's such a great leader that he lacks pretty much all the flaws that typify Imperial Commanders (IE Arrogance, sadism, megalomania ect). In the end, the only reason Thrawn loses in legends, is because a Dog-Man stabs him and in Cannon, because Space Squid-Whales come out of no where. As much as we all love Thrawn, the fact he's a villain means that story demands that he fail, but there is just no way to have him fail that won't seem horribly contrived.

It's not so much the fact that the space whales came from nowhere, as that Ezra could see the future and make planes so outside the box, that relay on elements that anyone other than Ezra can never control for, that Thrawn had no chance to see it coming. Ezra downright outwitted Thrawn!

Actually, its very simple to beat Thrawn despite his superior tactics. You see, he can't be everywhere and everyone at once. If one of his subordinates is incompetent, reckless, or gullible at the wrong moment and place, that person can be the weak point in his plan. You can plan for all sorts of variables, but you can't counter every possible failure of those you command. Not with a talent pool as worthless as the Empire.

Thrawn's weakness is the unpredictable and that which he cannot understand. In canon that weakness translates to the force, which is why the Bendu was great, as the Bendu was an unpredictable factor. In legends Thrawn had no inkling of the Noghri movement against the empire, which was a blindside, as he relied upon the Noghri to help build his empire. Furthermore, in legends the force could not be used against him as he had tools, such as the Ysalamiri to counteract the force. In traditional and normal terms, Thrawn has no weakness, but when something unpredictable or unlikely occurs, Thrawn's plans can.be foiled.

I may not be familiar with his Legends stuff, but in Rebels and the recent novel Thrawn is just fantastic. He's quickly become one of my favorite Star Wars villains. Say, for characters such as Thrawn that exist in multiple continuities (in this case both Legends and Disney canon), would you guys ever consider doing multiple Dossier episodes examining the different versions? It'd be an interesting opportunity to compare and contrast.

Considerign Thrawn i still alive after the Rebels finale, hist canon story isnt done yet and a lot fo the details of his past, like how he met Anakin durign the Clone Wars is still not covered so makign a canon version woudltn make much sense right now.

Yeah, they’re only a few months old, but are growing quite rapidly. Lore channels have started to take off. Spacedock, Eckhart’s Ladder, Lore Reloaded, Star Wars Explained- there’s proven to be a massive audience for them. We’re at a point in fandom history where the information is as prevalant as it is readily accessible, and these videos are perfect for both introducing people to a series (when my mother began looking into Stranger Things, the first thing I did was show her the Institute’s video on Hawkins Nat’l Laborotory), and for brushing up, either because the franchise you like is making new content, or maybe just to keep your memory freshed. Besides, if you wish to see the channel grow, what better way to promote stuff you like than through word of mouth. Tell your friends and family who you figure would be interested IRL, on Twitter/Facebook, on forums and Discord, or whatever other means you deem fit.

If I remember it correctly that the thing was that his bodyguard was an alien. And he found out that Thrawns forces comitted genocide on his people. I dont think Thrawn was personally responsible for that but his bodyguard was very pissed and didnt want Thrawn to succeed in his plans to build his own empire. I could be wrong though and of course this all is SW Legends material. Its not canon.

His body guard was from a race that worshipped Darth Vader as a savior of their race. They were very strong, and warlike. When Leia Organa came to their planet they worshipped her as “Lady Vader” as his daughter. She convinced them to turn on Thrawn and serve her instead.

The Noghri (can't remember if that's the right spelling) were the subjects of a battle over their homeworld that decimated their ecosystem. Darth Vader later came to the planet and attempted to subjugate them, but the Noghri proved to be too strong and capable and impressed by this Darth Vader opted for diplomacy. In the ensuing talks, Vader proved that he could recover the Noghris ecosystem, though it may take decades if not centuries, earning him the eternal gratitude of the Noghri. Secretly however Darth Vader made it so that a genetically engineered plant that the empire created was the only thing that could grow in areas where the Empire had used specially designed chemicals to maintain the toxicity of the planet above lethal levels, but well below life-giving, ensuring the Noghris compliance. Admiral Thrawn took over the Noghris after Vaders death and continued the charade against the Noghri. Once Leia arrived at Honoghr (the Noghri's planet) she eventually realized what was going on and revealed the ploy to the Noghri people, forever earning the favor of the Noghri for exposing the Empires falsehood and demonstrating how to recover their world. The Empire and Thrawn in particular unaware of the Noghris secret change of allegiance, never saw the hidden dagger coming that terminated Thrawns ambitions just as it was about to achieve them.

You know, I read the three Thawn novels recently. There's a lot of misinformation and exaggeration about his accomplishments. The author of the Thrawn trilogy has even gone on record complaining about how the character became nothing short of a Mary Sue in the eyes of the fandom and the minds of subsequent writers. There's no doubt that Thrawn was a military and strategic genius, but he had his limitations - serious limitations. He was a grand strategist, but a purely average tactician. Much of his successes came from his extremely detailed and comprehensive analysis of the situation beforehand, but he was frequently outmaneuvered when things didn't go according to his initial assessments. He was completely blindsided by the betrayal of the Noghri and failed to anticipate the unorthodox tactics used against him during his initial attempt to hijack New Republic warships at the end of the first novel. The effectiveness of the trap he springs on the New Republic fleet during the third novel is also overestimated in the video. The novel makes it clear that Thrawn was actually _losing_ just before he was assassinated. The New Republic fleet had managed to inflict serious damage on the Golan Platforms that were the linchpin of his strategy, and the text describes him as openly considering retreat. In summary, Thrawn was indeed a great threat to the New Republic. He may even be one of the greatest military minds of the Star Wars universe. But he wasn't perfect, and his author took great pains to try and portray his weaknesses in a rational manner. It's only through exaggeration of his accomplishments that he achieves the boogeyman of Star Wars status that he enjoys today.

that doesn't make him a average tactician, guy isn't omniscient, it shows how good of a tactician he really is, who else but Thrawn would decided to pull out and stop wasting resources when your initial plan plan got stopped by sheer blind luck? ya calrissian being there was blind luck. What exactly do you expect Thrawn to do when all the bridges got burned down in the hijacked ships? insist on trying to recover them anyways? And everyone knows that the Republic was dead if Thrawn didnt get assassinated on the third novel, even inflicting serious damage to the golan platforms doesnt mean much, just more damage to the shipyards but the republic fleet was doomed ether ways

Here's how I think Thrawn's Empire would've worked: - No slavery, all alien species would be allowed to join the Imperial Military. - No superweapons, in Thrawn's philosophy, superweapons were flawed, and would be defeated eventually (Death Stars) - All starfighters would be equipped with hyperdrives, and shields. Upgrades as well (heavier laser cannons) - All planets, systems, nebulas would be militarized with installations, factories, shipyards, and laboratories. - All troops would be cloned (basically a clone army like he did in Legends). - New capital ships, and powerful weapons. - Fast, equipped Dreadnoughts such as the Bellator-class Dreadnought would act as sector defense command ships. Bonus: Thrawn would also want more Onager-class Star Destroyers, and Torpedo Spheres.

I agree with these points in my Empire of the Hand fanfics, except the clone troopers part. Some troopers might be clones (even some of the originals, now acting as teachers), but not all. He doesn't need an entirely cloned army -- not with the loyalty he commands in his troops just by treating them like valued, sentient beings. As Baron Fel said, "if you ever served with Thrawn, you'd follow him anywhere."

I like how the New Cannon fleshes out why sombody like Thrawn would be an Imperial and not a rebel or a non-military leader, and how we also get to see Thrawns charicter flaws, like his difficulty understanding his enemies on any level other than a tactical one. In a weird way Thrawns greatest weakness is that he can only view a conflict, of any kind, as something to be won.

It’s worth noting that, while Thrawn is notorious as one of the vanishingly few “good boss” leaders in the Empire, his downfall was a direct result of one of his few “bad boss” actions, namely his treatment of the Noghri, who served as his bodyguards and personal corps of assassins. The biosphere of the Noghri homeworld was damaged in the aftermath of a space battle that the Empire took part in. Darth Vader himself earned the Noghri’s support, under the promise that the Empire would work to fix the damage to their homeworld, but instead covertly exacerbated in order to make the Noghri more dependent on the Empire. When he was given access and control of the Noghri, Thrawn chose to continue this policy of gradually poisoning their homeworld, even as they served him with immense loyalty. It was only coincidence that one of the assassins sent to capture Leia and her children was able to recognize her as Vader’s daughter and, through the resulting circumstances, learn what the Empire had really been doing to their home planet. It was on learning this that Rukh, Thrawn’s bodyguard, killed him and brought Thrawn’s campaign to an end. The unfortunate thing, for him, was that, with the degree of loyalty the Noghri held, Thrawn likely could have reinforced it by revealing the truth of what Vader had been doing, and then taking action to fix it. Instead, he chose to continue the deception, which then backfired horribly, once it was revealed.

8:46 I'm a Rebel, and New Republic fan boy, but I do like Thrawn, and I'm not saying he was all that bad, but he could have worned the New Republic about Vong and perhaps convinced the New Republic and the Impiral remanet to join forces to fight off the Vong, because the Empire was defeated by the Rebellion what make it think that only the Empire would have the power defeat the Vong, and he could have been a perfect Supreme Chanselor for the New Republic as well. 🤔

He didn't believe the Rebels/New Republic could fight the War as it's views were too scattered, too inefficient, too democratic, and as the War proved, he was painfully correct.

I don't think that leading a democracy was to Thrawns liking. He certainly cared deeply for the well-being of his subordinates. And he was the guy to create a healthy, just, working atmosphere. But he was not the guy to support democracy. Things go his way, or they don't go at all. He is more like Napoleon Bonaparte or Frederick the Great. A well-meaning tyrant, but still a tyrant.

The order of an efficient, concentrated Imperial counter-offensive that was waiting for the Vong when they entered the galaxy would have made the campaign a lot shorter and cleaner. Everything the New Republic stood for only threw away lives. I am NOT saying the Empire is right or anything, just that they would have been able to beat back the Vong much easier, especially with Thrawn's foreknowledge.

Well done Templin Institute! I’m thoroughly impressed. You treat your topics with full academic rigor as though they were real history and I appreciate it. These franchises deserve that type of analysis. Do I have any ideas for future content? Why yes I do! I think you would do an amazing overview of Dr. Henry Walton Jones Jr.

Have been reading and listening to the novel Thrawn, detailing his early imperial career. It is a most interesting read, he is portrayed as a Sherlock Holmes within the imperial navy. Always calm, always observing, analyzing and utterly ignorant of social conventions. He is often viewed as heartless despite his efforts to minimize civilian causalities and convince his opponents to surrender. Whilst another protagonist in the story, Arihna Pryce, is a clearer example of someone ambitious and utterly cold blooded.
