In the second step I do not understand why you keep 5 sig figs while you have 3 sig figs coming from Avagadro’s number

You can carry at least one or more sig figs through the calculation and then use the correct sig figs in your finally answer. This avoids compounding rounding errors!

Since when are they called formula units? Is this recent? I thought we just say particles. Great vid btw.

Great question Alex. Ionic compounds can still be called particles but some textbooks call ionic compounds formula units. This is because ionic compounds are not molecular meaning they do not make individual molecules. Instead ionic compounds form crystal lattices of repeating cations and anions. When an ionic compound dissolves in water, the water makes the ions get separated from each other as mobile units of charge. Hence the name formula units.

Answer this question for me, please, is a head scratcher: 1.0 cubic centimetre (cm^3) of a solution contains 0.010g of salt. What is the mass of salt contained in 1 cubic decimetre (dm^3) of the same solution? Textbook says 10g but I disagree, my answer is 0.1g Which answer is correct and Why?

Textbook is correct. 1 dm= 10 cm. Thus, 1 dm^3 is 10^3 cm^3 which is 1000 cm^3. Thus we must multiply 0.01 g of salt by 1000 to get the answer which is 10 g. You made the mistake of assuming that 1 dm^3= 10 cm^3.

Soooo, formula units its another word for atoms? 🥺

  • @AnneSchmidt

Formula unit is the name for one set of cation and anion in a larger ionic crystal lattice. Like just one NaCl when there are moles of NaCl in a visible amount of table salt 🧂.
