    Thank you. Now I am wondering about the reverse -- if I am given a number of ions of Cl in the ionic compound MgCl2, how do I calculate how many grams we would of the compound itself for the number of ions given?

    Great question! This kind of problem usually is really hard for students. Here is an example and work for you to try: If you have 4.32e24 Cl- ions how many grams of MgCl2 is possible? First you would divide by 2 ions of Cl- (1 f.u. MgCl2 is in the numerator). Then you would divide by 6.02e23 f.u. MgCl2 (1 mole MgCl2 is in the numerator). Then you would multiply by 95.21 g MgCl2 (1 mole MgCl2 is in the denominator). The answer is 342 g MgCl2. Basically you have three conversions again, but in the reverse order and the numerator and denominators are flipped. Hope this helps!

    @@AnneSchmidt (1 f.u MgCl2/2 ions Cl-)x(1mol MgCl2/6.02x10^23 f.u MgCl2)x(95.21g MgCl2/1 mol MgCl2) is what I punched into my calculator according to your instructions. However, I did not recieve 342 g as an answer. Could you perhaps clarify? Thanks in advance! Note: I did not include the brackets when putting it into my calculator, I just included the brackets here so it'd be easier for you to understand :)

    If the question were to ask for the total number of ions would the last part then be written as 3 ions/1 f.u. Cu(No3)2

    If we have to calculate total ions in NH3 then we multiply the number of molecules by 6?

    Could I change the last 2 conversion factors to solve this problem? I got the same result. I did it like that: 2 mol nitrate / 1 mol Copper (ll) nitrate x 6.02x10²³ nitrate ions/ 1 mol nitrate Is it true?

    in this case is the # of FU equal to the # of Cu atoms ?

  • @AnneSchmidt

    @AnneSchmidt

    Yes it is. Since every FU of Copper (II) Nitrate contains only one copper atom.

    Do we solve it the same way if they asked for nitrogen atoms?

  • @AnneSchmidt

    @AnneSchmidt

    4 жыл бұрын

    Nitrate is an ion, not atom so maybe if you were asked to find nitrogen atoms you would have the same numerical answer, but a different label. This is because there are two nitrogen atoms in one formula unit of copper (II) nitrate. Also, if you were asked to find the number of oxygen atoms, then you would need the last step of the stoichiometry problem to be multiplied by 6 atoms of oxygen for every 1 formula unit.

    Do you mean the table to write the formula for copper (II) nitrate? I have seen students write the formula wrong and then get the molar mass wrong and then get the answer wrong.

    HK now I think I understand. I recently switched to a “fence post” or “table” method of showing stoichiometry but it is no different then showing lines and x between (or using parentheses). It’s just easier digitally to create “table” stoichiometry instead of fractions with x’s (times) between.
