Grafting Grape Vines in EARLY SPRING | Best GRAFTING TECHNIQUES for GRAPES
Grafting grape vines when they start to leave dormancy can have a high percentage of success but some care should be used when choosing the right grafting technique for each situation. The high root pressure that grapes can produce will “drown” most grafts, so excessive sap pressure will have to be released for graft success. In this video I show my favorite techniques to graft young and old grape vines, indoors or in the field, and the best way to choose the best grafting technique to each grafting situation.

If that white grafting tape is bound so snuggly around the Scion bud, how does the new grafted bud break through?

Hi, Can you graft an old grape vine cutting the scions form another new grape vine at the same time and the same day with the cleft method ? Or cut the scion one month before, store in the fridge and graft it to the old vine one month after using the cleft method also ?

All you need to know and much more! Thank you Sr. Sacadura. Today we are down in the vineyard grafting (for the first time!) on older but vigorous vines here in Portugal
Thank you for the step by step procedures and demonstrations on how to do it. I enjoy it learning the technique. Have a nice day.

BTW, I had good success last year grafting Nebbiolo variety onto various kinds of rootstocks. I clearly see that one needs to understand the principles and to make the best choice with each circumstance. I'm in Canada (read: cold winters) and I can't wait until spring to see how the newly grafted canes did over winter. A lot of thanks to you for my success. If I were a little closer I'd bring you a fine bottle of Canadian Pinot.
I can watch these videos forever.

@@JSacadura I request you to do video specific for grafting and growing persimmons olny . I found them hardest to graft and more worse I growing. thanks
@JSacadura

Persimmons have to be in full sap flow to be grafted successfully. Its also important to remove all growth (below the graft) that might remove sap from the graft. Regarding growing, the type of rootstock used is very important to a correct adaption to local conditions. I have added your suggestion to my list of video ideas.
Total respect thank you

Thanks very much. Yours are the very best on KZread! I have one question: what do you consider early spring ... for instance, can I chip graft grapes 3 weeks before bud break ?
@JSacadura
3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can, but you would have to protect the chip well as it has to wait for the rootstock to start moving sap. I would wait until I see signs that the rootstock is awake. Thanks for the comment and the support.

Exellent! Each time I had doubts what for You cover buds? 😳 At least I've seen - it's not a problem cause buds break parafilm. Easy. Thank You!😌
@JSacadura
3 жыл бұрын
Precisely. As Parafilm is wax based you can cover the buds as they break it easily. And they stay protected from dehydration until they start growing.
It is a really good tutorial for vine grafing activity
You are KZreads master grafter, thank you. I also found an interesting graft technique on a channel from apple growers in the Himalaya, it is called strap grafting and good for tree rootstock with larger diameter , I have never seen it in european grafting books.
@JSacadura
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I have seen the technique you mention but I always graft rootstocks of large diameter with the bark graft (like this - kzread.info/dash/bejne/lGGd27qqd5SWibg.html) and they work fine. The extra flap they place over the top of the cut on the rootstock seems an extra step that is really not needed.
Very good video, as always
You're vidéos are great ! I have one question : when you are grafting the young cheap rootstock with the modified cleft method, do you make some cut at the base/bottom ? And still on young rootstock, do you make cut with cheap budding technique ? Thanks you

Terimakasih cara terbaik untuk membuat sambungan jenis baru yang lebih baik

super!
Thanks for the great video. I have tried all of these techniques at least 50 times and have yet to have one successful graft. None of my grafts have callused over. I even purchased a grafting cutter that makes perfect joins but still nothing works. What do think could be the problem? Many of the buds did start to grow but eventually died because they were not callused or joined to the root stock.
Great ❤

12:45 Is the Chip Bud crossing the cambium on the vertical(up-down) portion of cambium?
Hi Sacadura- I did the whip and tongue technique you showed in the video to graft onto old root stock. This was done around mid winter and was v happy when the bud burst in early spring. However after a while they started shivering. What was wrong and is ther any way to rescue the graft? Thanks
Great
Great video! Thanks. Can I do the same in late May when the seedling already have some new shoots? I mean still graft the same way you did in the video, not into green. Somebody says that the plant will get shock and die.
Good video friend 👍
Thanks Thailand

Hello, the video was very informative. But what do you do after the first leaves start? I have a couple of cuts from some grape vines and 1 mature grape vine. I want to start those other cuts from grafting.
Mantab om👍
I like it good job
Extremely good instructions! Question: how about grafting green on green in middle of June in a nordic country?
After a summer chip-bid has healed, should you keep it covered with parafilm over the winter or is it ok to remove the parafilm before winter? I just don't know if grafted buds are more vulnerable to winter cold.
Thank you for making all these videos! They're really helpful. What is the tape that you were using?
@JSacadura
3 жыл бұрын
The white one is Parafilm. The black one is a self adhesive rubber tape. I like it very much for these type of jobs. Its easy to work with and adheres to itself, so you can mold it around the rootstock and the scions or chips.

Pour le greffage en fente, il est préférable de greffer avec les vignes en dormance, à la fin de l'hiver, au mois de février ou mars.
Dear Sir! Thank you for your efforts to share your skills and knowledge in grafting! Is it possible to graft vines during summer as well, or will it fail? Best regards 🤗

Late spring grafts might still work if well protected. Summer grafting will most likely fail.
