Graco GXff - clean out explained

Just a follow on from the three previous videos on using the GXff. This one I tell you how I clean it out.
It's quite simple and if you have any questions as I've not explained it clear enough, please ask. I may have missed something that is imported as a babble on ;)
One thing I will mention, when you flush water through the pipe to get the paint out of it (at a lower pressure to clean it) aim it against the side of the can/bucket. Do it back into your paint can/bucket. The paint comes out in folds/waves of paint, once it's the water coming through you'll notice it's very thing and watery even though it looks the pant colour. When this happens flush the water into your waste bucket.

About Me...
I've over 30yrs in the Decorating trade working in the family business (set up by my father in 1965 - who's still working today and his apprentice who started with him at the age of 15 in 1966 is also still working for us too).
I've served an proper apprenticeship (with papers) from leaving school in 1990, being one of the last to gain City & Guides before it moved over to NVQ.
I passed Advanced C&G in 1994 with two distinctions and one credit.
One of the awards I won while at college was winning the BDA Cup (British Decorators Association) for high standards in practical work.
Then I went on to do C&G 1+2 in teacher trainer where I then taught P&D and co lectured on the decorative paint effects evening course (Marbling, Graining, broken colour work) for the next 3yrs at Basford Hall College in Nottingham (UK).... the rest is history.

I need to purchase a Gx 21 but I am torn between the 21 and the 21ff . Which would you say is a best buy fir emulsion work and woodwork if you had to choose one ? I was tempted on the gx21 and then just buy the hopper conversion kit, along with a smaller diameter hose .

The hopper kit on any give you the shorter hose and allows you to use less amount of paint. The gxff I have had the 7.5 hose The 395stmax2 has the hopper . So also had the 15m bigger hose and the 7.5 smaller hose. You can use the shorter hose for ceilings too. I'm using my gxff today... Just done ceilings with 517 And tomorrow woodwork.. 210 or 208

@@lockstocky2800 gxff or gx21ff both have the same pump. If you were doing new builds, day in and out, I'd say no. But you'll be fine. Get Optiva primer, it sprays neat but I top it to the top of the tub... About a litre. .14 or.16 Tip would be idea

No, a good sand and dust off was fine, nibbing down between coats also helps.

I've recently purchased a gxff really like it. In regards to cleaning do you run pump armour through the hose. If so do you leave it in there for long term storage?

Hi. It's a good bit of kit. Flush with warm clean water. Then some pump armor. I don't leave in the hose, as when I in couple it i try drain as much out as possible. But leave a bit of pump armour in the bottom of the hopper so you know it's around the ball/pump. When you next use it, flush with clean water again.. don't need loads. Then get your paint through it. Did you see my other vid on the gxff?

@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator thanks for your response and very helpful. I've watched a few of your videos but not sure which one your on about? Is there a reason you don't keep pump armour in the hose/gun? I only use mine every now and again and am. Worried about paint hardening on the hose/gun over long periods of time. Thanks

@@andycallaway7263 there won't be paint in your hose or gun... You'll have flushed it clean. The pump armor is more to keep the pump ballbearing not sitting in water and rusting and sticking.

Do you normally tip the gxff to get the paint out or just run it through the gun with the tip in reverse?

Either. Or run the prime hose but pump into your paint tin

An observation, it would be much better if you had a tripod to leave your hands free, then you could demonstrate cleaning the sprayer rather than just talking about it.

I have seen people use a cleanshot direct to the spray gun like this, but why? A spray gun with no extension should not spit, and if you want some directionality, why not use a swivel? Thanks.

  • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator

You are spot on, it's more a case of using it as a swivel head. Two birds one stone. I've used the gun today without it actually. Once I'd tweak my pressure enough to get rid of any 'fingers' / Tails on the spray fan, it was fine. I only had some spits fist off when pumping the paint through at start up. Once I was spraying I didn't notice anything.
