Gracie Medical Defense™ at UCI Health
Спорт
The UCI Health Workplace Violence Prevention Team has partnered with the world’s leading self-defense institution, Gracie University of Jiu-Jitsu, to provide enhanced personal safety training to all UCI Health co-workers.
This will be an interactive and hands-on course that will provide skills to better keep yourselves and others safe, and to reduce the risk of injury, when encountering a combative person.
Gracie Medical Defense™ (GMD) is a comprehensive workplace safety system designed to address the most common physical threats experienced by medical staff. The GMD techniques are based on the time-tested principles of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) but have all been specifically adapted for use in healthcare.
Here is some of what is taught in this fun, interactive seminar:
• How to use distance management to mitigate threats of all kinds
• How to escape the most common grabs (standing and bedside)
• How to defend against kicks from the bedside
• How to use the Punch Block Series to avoid injury on the ground
• How to escape from being strangled (standing and bedside)
• How to intervene safely if a colleague is being attacked (standing position and on the ground)
• How to verbally de-escalate combative situations to set protective boundaries
• How to use manual control tactics to ensure staff and patient safety
Due to the inherently de-escalatory nature of jiu-jitsu, all the techniques are designed to keep medical staff safe while also protecting patients from harm.
The GMD program was designed for men and women with absolutely no previous experience, and all the techniques can be learned and practiced by anyone, regardless of their age or physical fitness level.
If, for any reason, you are not comfortable participating, you can simply show up and watch, and you will still learn a ton.
This special 4-hour seminar is free for all UCI Health co-workers, and all participants will be paid using Continuing Education (CE) credits, but space is limited so you must pre-register in the UC Learning Center where you can search “Gracie Medical Defense” to find the course.

I'm a respiratory therapist and have worked in healthcare for 16 years in one form or another. This was exactly the reason I started jiujitsu. People don't realize how violent patients and even family members have gotten. Thank you Rener and Eve for bringing awareness to this issue

How many of you have had a friend or family member who was hurt or killed by the `novelty inoculations` administered by nurses in the covid era? Why let any of them live?

I'm a healthcare worker who's taken classes at Gracie U. I actually got to work hands with Rener, and it was a great experience. Our hospital works closely with UCI and UCI health. This would be a great program for our healthcare workers. A couple of years ago, we did an active shooter simulation with the police department, fire department, and paramedics in one of our new buildings prior to its opening, and it was surprisingly emotional and realistic. I was glad to be a part of it and learned so much. Thanks for all the work that you guys do.
This is great guys! I'm a certified WE instructor and an RN. I hope you will provide us instructors the ability to eventually teach this program as well as it is SO needed!
I work in pain management, and we have many angry and confrontational patients. This course is so thoughtful and very needed.

@@bryanedds8922 I genuinely feel bad for you. Not only for what happened to you and your loved ones. I feel bad for you because you don’t understand how misguided your criticism is. At that time, nurses and doctors were doing what they thought was helping, based on the CDC’s instruction. Nobody knew much about covid-19. Yes its terrible that people were treated in ways that caused further complications. But your mistrust in medical staff can ONLY hurt you.

@@gert5072 How could people in the medical field be so blind and incorrect, while many of us without those degrees knew all of this perfectly well very early on? And shouldn't these past failures give anyone the right to be a bit apprehensive when dealing with them again? To not be allowed to see an already dying relative of a completely unrelated disease was abhorrent.
Definitely need this for the psych hospital I work for
This is cool. Focussing on self defence in specific environments/scenarios. It captures the essence of what a traditional martial art should be trying to achieve.
Can you do one for Paramedics? Fighting in the cramped space of an ambulance can be challenging.

It is wall grappling and it different from BJJ. BJJ is a ground grappling. Found near MMA gym that you can find and they will teach it to you.

This is great. Gracie is always on point. I jut hope they have something for all government related training/ conference/ seminars and not just for law enforcements. There are many securities governmental entities out there including conventions, districts, etc… that are interested.

I still have hopes, SOMEDAY….I’ve seen government agencies in security and other government agencies have skills, talents and even fit than most law enforcement out there. I just think they should be part of it so we all can help each other and combine our force to protect anyone. I still believe and support Gracie.
Every second that goes by where the police haven’t YET decided to include BJJ into their standardised training programs, it’s a second of missed opportunity and a second MORE of unnecessary public endangerment. I’ve no dog in the fight but I know I’d rather the police service/force have the ability and confidence to handle physical altercations safely.

Do you cover defense against biting and if the attacker uses improvised weapons?
@JIUJITSUMAN22

Against bitting, fish hooks. Against improvised weapons, improve position.
When are you going to make it a course (online) we can teach to our ambulance services? Like GST. Would love to be able to host them here in Alabama and Tennessee for EMS workers. Or have at our local CTC.
Great that they are helping address this, I have nothing but positive things to say about BJJ and the Gracie family but I hope this isn't the only solution UCI is going after. A lot of other things they can do to improve workplace violence before asking staff to learn self defense. Shouldn't be expected that you know how to fight at work
This is great, but I feel like a lot of these grappling submissions have the issue of expecting the opponent to be sane. Especially at 1:05, for example, I can see her getting bit in the throat.
@rodvan-zeller6360

I agree with you. The problem is that sport fighting and surviving a violent assault from a crazy person have nothing to do with each other. What works in a consensual athletic contest fails in real life.
@Kumofan
Ай бұрын
@@rodvan-zeller6360 hmm, yeah. A lot of techniques do fall apart in these situations, but I’m not sure bjj & other combat sports are entirely inapplicable. A lot of submission techniques really do work (as we see with some police training) but each system has to be molded to the specific purpose. In this case, removing holds that put the defender in potential danger would be ideal. But of course there’s also the issue in bjj that slamming the opponent is not often considered. Some holds are again only safe under the assumption the opponent doesn’t go mad with adrenaline and stand up & slam the defender against the ground. I think also a lot of techniques that rely on forcing the opponent to tap out before injury should probably be avoided, for the same reason. Safe restriction of movement is the best option for training medical personnel, rather than disabling moves and/or things that only work in a sports context. We also can’t focus too much on chokes, as in this context they can cause many complications. Perhaps moves that focus in the legs and avoid the head would be ideal, but then it’s somewhat limiting. As another example, a lot of striking and judo throws would not be ideal to recommend to medical personnel, despite their effectiveness, because of their inherent destructive nature-much of this training should focus on protecting the assailant from themselves as well.
What about defense against medical devices being used as weapons? there are a lot of sharp objects i.e. ( IV kits that have a catheter and fluid bag spikes)
I'm a 16 year healthcare security officer. We NEED this training but I guarantee they higher ups will say its either too costly or too much liability is involved; yet we carry firearms. Go figure.
I miss the old gracie breakdown where you and ryron would breakdown techniques instead of these short ad type videos. Bring back the breakdown of gracie breakdown and maybe throw these on their own channel. Food for thought
Armed security officers need this kind of training as well

Love it guys!
I’m a x-ray tech and years ago I was walking down the parking lot of my job when out of nowhere a man came up to me from my blind side and punch me in the face while I was holding 5 coffees in a tray…. I was thrown to the hood of a car but didn’t drop the coffee. I stood up and the guy threw another wild punch at me and this time I ducked under it and then threw the hot coffee on his face and chest… he screamed in pain, by that time the security people came over and comprehended him… cops came over and wanted to arrest him… well it turns out that the man was out of his Psyche medication and was acting violent … the cops asked me if I wanted to per-sue charges … I said NO.. just take him to a hospital so the man can get his meds. I was glad that the man hit me and not a female worker of mine… and glad he got help too.
Needs to be taught at all PDs Healthcare and schools... why are we still not doing this?
Jiu jitsu but for medical defense. Love it.
This is so needed in the uk!
I wish to learn these things
I'm a nurse at a hospital and blue belt. I had a confused man try punching us then I took him down onto the bed with a body lock and secured top position with him face down. Then he bit my arm 😅. It's usually psych patients, drug addicts, or dementia/delirium patients that attack us.
would be cool if this becomes an online program as well!
There needs to be a law equivalent of this if the female Vegas judge who got attacked by the defendant she was in the midst of sentencing is any indication.
jiu jitsu needs to be taught for EMS providers. I work as an EMT for 12 years and there is not a lot of this for EMS providers. I have been on and off in jiu jitsu for about 2.5 years and I can’t express enough how important it is for us to because we are dealing with patients much bigger than us and sometimes things change on a dime and sometimes PD isn’t there. -JR
This is really cool
I think this is a really cool idea and would love to participate even though I’m not a medical professional and I’m a blue belt in BJJ!
I wish they teach Gracie BJJ at every school and college in the USA. Call it the Gracie BJJ Bill! :)
I would love to access this course!

Healthcare, the only job where there are no consequences for clients that abuse you. Punch a police officer... go to jail. Hit a prison guard... get time added to your sentence. Kick a hospital worker... Maybe get put in restraints, but probably not. It's beyond frustrating. I've spent decades teaching martial arts, boxing, and wrestling. If you're even slightly interested in going to this, I highly recommend you go. There are a lot of bad self-defense programs out there, but these people are as legit as you could be. None better.
But you guys still only give discounts to cops? Cmon already. Been telling you guys for years about this. EMTs, FFs and Hospital staff need the same discounts as cops for your BJJ.
It would be nice if hospital staff actually took care of their patients as well. Do you know how many times I have been discharged from the ER with almost no help or advice. On my own. Stranded. Barely conscious. I got seriously assaulted after laying on the floor of the ER waiting room. On the edge of my life. So remember that staff are regular people too. Just like in customer service you get people who will discharge you too early, like transferring a call because it's easier for them than actually helping you.
Too late. I've left.
can you teach us how to defend from medics coming at us with untested gene therapy juice?
