Grace Bumbry “graced” opera goers, opera lovers, her fans and the world with a very unique artistry of sheer and magnificent excellence. She is one of those few opera singers that throw shills up ones spine. A complete artist that portrays what she is singing, an exuberant velvety voice and an impeccable vocal technique which allowed for adroit coloratura and pianissimi delivery. She overcame ethnicity roadblocks and she perched the difficulties of an American born and trained operatic singer would have in making a successful career at home. She was a stunning success both in the major operatic houses in the U.S. as well as all over the world! A true dramatic soprano whose vocal range and technique allowed her a wide and successful operatic repertoire. A tremendous stage presence and unquestionably the loveliest pair of legs ever to “grace” the operatic stage. The MET has a picture of them in its gallery! My salute to this first class, American soprano, one of my great, all time favorites! Could we please have the rest of the interview? 😊

I recently learned that she's a Grammy Winner but for some reason it's not listed in her Imdb pge or Grammys.com. THIS LADY NEEDS TO GET THE GRAMMY FOR LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT!!!

Why must it be a competition? Why must it be a I’m better than you. Anyway I alway preferred Shirley Verrett. Her voice was unbeatable. Her Falcon range was amazing.

Thank you very much for shareing this piece of paradise. It is for me a real gift to see again Grace Bumbry and to listen to her talking about her marvelous career and about her collegues like Shirley Verrett. Grace Bumbry is a marvelous soprano and she is a real Queen of Opera.

Heard her in Ernani, a soprano role, in Chicago. Fantastic. Never heard her live as a mezzo.i think Grace is a tough cookie. Refer to Lotfi Mansouri's book!

Love this interview but ALWAYS never lead question about another. Lead question n focus of i'view should be for the one you are interviewing. Grace and Shirley were good on each other and always there is a healthy inspiring competition. Legend... Fav. Score on interview.

She and Verrett were not friends. You can see her annoyance at that comment. The interviewer should have prepared better.

Grace sang with so much power that she would often pass gas. That was the reason she swore off beans during her operatic career.

Grace Bumbry is a dramatic mezzo-soprano. Yes I know she tried veering into sopranp repertoire, but her voice is that of a dramatic mezzo. This video is mislabeled.

You're right but there are a few soprano roles in which she was really convincing, for example in "Le Cid" from Massenet.

it doesn't really matter --- soprano or mezzo-soprano. this woman can sing !! the power / volume / beauty / the lyrical expressiveness of Schubert's music --- majestically projected. i'm sure every soprano who found out Bumbry was signed to sing the mezzo part, must have had mini-strokes. there aren't many singers who have such grand-operatic voices ::: her vocal-performance as _Amneris_ on the recording w / Price, Domingo & Milnes was magnificent. Milnes also has a majestically projected sound ( the two of them pretty-much took the opera away from the leads ). her performance at Bayreuth was no accident. they knew her voice was rare in its commanding power. no matter, soprano or mezzo-soprano ; no matter what is written about sopranos, Bumbry is always a great vocal-force and exposes the limitations of sopranos, LP in particular.

I agree completely, her voice was best interpretive in her mezzo soprano roles which was fine. The higher soprano roles weren't as great a fit for her, a little better for Verrett.

If you consider the mezzo screaming at the top of her lungs as a method of “exposing the soprano’s limitations” because that’s exactly what disgraceful Grace did-SCREAM as a soprano. It was horrible. In my opinion, she was jealous of Leontyne and Shirley because their high notes were completely on a level that disgraceful Grace could never achieve. Nevertheless, I like her as a mezzo but her Amneris never overshadowed Price.
