Ciacona sopra "Ach Herr, mich armen Sünder". A chaconne (ciacona) is a musical form based on the repetition of a bass melody, which is the case for this piece. For it to work, the bass must be compatible with the different phrases of the chorale melody, which is the case here, with a few particularities, which contribute to the originality of this piece. When listening, more than the recurring bass, we are struck by the aspect of the return of a ritornello, which places the interventions of the chorale as stanzas in relation to a refrain, which works very well, and is part of the singularity of this piece.
This chorale is a chorale for the Passion, it exists with several texts, it is present among others in the Passion according to St. Matthew by J. S. Bach.
The general meaning of the text : do not punish me, or I am lost.
