Gotion takes on rival CATL with superfast charging battery

Ғылым және технология

Gotion’s G-Current lithium-ion-phosphate battery is capable of powering a vehicle for close to 500km with just under 10 minutes of charging. The company anticipates that by early 2025, when their new manufacturing facilities are operational, they will commence mass distribution of the battery to electric vehicle manufacturers.
Gotion High-Tech, a Chinese battery manufacturer supported by Volkswagen, has announced that its new fast-charging battery is prepared for commercial production. This development gives it a competitive advantage over rivals such as CATL, the leading global producer of electric-vehicle batteries. As the fourth-largest EV-battery producer in mainland China and the eighth-largest globally, Gotion High-Tech has revealed that its G-Current lithium-ion-phosphate (LFP) battery can provide a driving range of nearly 500km with less than 10 minutes of charging. The LFP battery, which can power both fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, is aimed at sedans and SUVs priced between 300,000 yuan (US$41,530) and 400,000 yuan. This was stated by Cao Yong, the vice-president of Gotion’s engineering research and development institute, on Friday. Cao explained that the battery was designed to meet market demand and will significantly alleviate consumers’ concerns about driving range. Batteries make up nearly 40% of an EV’s cost. In China, the world’s largest EV market, four out of every ten new cars are battery-powered, and the expansion rate of charging facilities is accelerating. EV sales in mainland China account for 60% of the global total. Gotion’s 75 kilowatt-hour (KWh) G-Current battery provides a range of 480km with 9.8 minutes of charging, and it takes 25 minutes to fully charge the battery, which then provides a car with a 600km range. Cao anticipates that the company will begin large-scale delivery of the battery to EV assemblers from early 2025, once its new production facilities are operational.
Gotion High-Tech’s batteries are used by several electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers. Some of the notable ones include:
1. Volkswagen: Gotion High-Tech is backed by Volkswagen and supplies batteries for their EVs.
2. Chery, SAIC Wuling, JAC, Chang’an, and Leapmotor: These leading local-brand automakers in China are some of Gotion’s major customers.
3. Huawei: Huawei is the company’s largest customer for its energy storage battery segment.
4. BYD and Tesla: Gotion’s lithium-iron-phosphate chemistry has been adopted by major EV makers like BYD and Tesla.
Solid-state batteries are considered a superior option for EVs compared to batteries based on liquid electrolytes, including sodium-ion batteries and current lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries, due to their increased safety, reliability, and efficiency. This technology promises a longer driving range, but it comes with higher development and production costs. We will follow up on Gotion and report back as and when it makes progress.
That’s all for now and thank you for tuning in.

Gotion is not the first to Develop better and faster charging battery and it won't be the last. China is truly market-driven economy allowing innovation to flourish, and BYD or CATL will probably be working on the newest and quickest charging battery to drive better EV. Having said that, Gotion will further outpace the US and the rest of the world in battery technology. Can Gotion be able to hold its position in 2025 when it's in full mass production capacity? What can BYD and CATL possibly do to regain their position in high performance EV batteries? Please share your thoughts down in the comment below. Thank you for watching! 😊

Man, this new battery will further put Chinese EVs way out there in a whole new league. Tesla and the rest of the western automakers will have no choice but to partner with Gotion.

If Gotion came out with this new specification, the chances are they may have the next upgrade that will yield even longer range and shorter charging time. The competition is going to be fierce and BYD and CATL are probably feeling the heat.
