Love your videos. I am going back into the SCA (society for creative anachronisms). I love Copperplate best but it is a much later period script so... I am doubling back a bit further. Glad you're doing these too. Altho I think the script styles I'll end up doing are older than even these are. Helpful tho. As the older stuff is nothing like Copperplate imo.

I’ve been frustrated with some books I’ve read because they will say that the downstroke, space between letters, and counter space inside letters are the exact same width. You could hypothetically draw downstrokes evenly apart across a whole page and then just add the quadratas. However, the quadrata system, it seems that common sense spacing rules apply (most amount of space between two i’s and least between two o’s), and in semi-quadrata it does seem a bit more uniform because you down has the shoulders to deal with that throw off the equal spacing. Am I right here? And must I accept that the second stroke of the “n” has a little longer top semi-quadrata than the first? I remember you saying, “You can’t understand the “m” without understanding the lozenge.” It seems this is the case.

Aaron Murg there are no shoulders in semi Quadrata. It is Quadrata which has shoulders, quadrants and lozenges. For semi Quadrata I use the same lozenge principle of diagonally across. I find it more difficult in SQ because it is not a separate stroke. You just have to write it slower and be more careful
@Jusangen

PAScribe Ah, so SQ does follow the same quadrant and lozenge approach. Got it! Thank you very much for replying!

Very nice instruction! I understand the quadrata (Textura) better now. But what a pity the semi quadrate has no z. ;) It would be absolutely marvelous to have you instructing a few design options of some letters to write them in a more decorative playful manner.

@@PAScribe I'm confused as to which parts of the letters are quadrants and which are lozenges. My question was, let's say on an 'o', are the connecting horizontal(ish) stokes on the top and the bottom lozanges? Does this apply to all the horizontal (ish) strokes ie the top connector of the n or the bottom connector of the u. I hope that made sense...

Hello PAScribe - I contacted you a while ago when I was attending classes in Geneva, Switzerland. I showed you the work my teacher had taught & you were horrified, as her lessons contained a real mix of styles and she admitted that it was her Gothic Textura version! I'm therefore trying to relearn Textualis Quadrata on my own, but do it properly this time! I plan to practise the lettering you have done above, but need guidance on size and degrees/angles. My nib is 2.5 and my teacher taught me to do four times the width of nib as the basic (minuscule) size for i, r, m, n, etc. Before I start, can I check that this is the correct sizing? She also taught me that everything is at 60 degrees, but I saw somewhere that you say 45 degrees for quadrant and 60 for lozenge. Am I correct in adopting these?
