Gothic Textura Quadrata (medieval calligraphy tutorial) // Sunday Scriptorium Ep. 2

This is the second episode of my new Sunday Scriptorium series, where I will be showing you my process for learning medieval styles of calligraphy.
I highly recommend you watch the first episode of the series, since I reference to it quite often. They are meant as a pair. To watch it, click here: • Sunday Scriptorium Ep....

    You know, I never leave comments on YT, but your vids are so stunning that I decided to express my admiration. BuJos are so mainstream nowadays, not so many people really use them for productivity sake and they all look like a copy of a copy of a copy. Same themes, same spreads: hearts and cherry blossoms for Valentines day, succulents and sea shells for summer etc. But yours is so unique, so artistic and yet helps you stay productive! I've never seen anyone using an A6 notebook as a BuJo, what you're doing is just fantastic. I wish your YT channel a decent amount of subscribers!

    Thank you so much! Your words mean the world to me. I see KZread as a way to connect with a community of people who like the same things I do rather than putting on a show, so it is my priority to stay true to what I do with or without a camera. Happy to see you here!

    Great tutorial with lovely historical knowledge! I started recently with a little more of a "old school" approach using a calligraphy quill and ink dipper. More laborious and time consuming but very satisfying!

    Great video - thanks. I find that this alphabet is excellent for practice due to its pristine simplicity, as the bells and whistles, frills and frou-frou that so often embellish the "gothic hand" can easily mask an underlying deficiency of discipline and dexterity. Your notion of exercises is spot on. You can make it a pleasure - a kind of mindfulness meditation. It's a choice. When I was a kid, an old gentleman told me, "If you have 4 hours to chop down a tree, spent 3 hours sharpening your axe. You'll get the same job done, with a lot less effort." One on the related Upper Case alphabet would be the icing on the cake!

    2:09 If you think, there was Fraktur font in germany, which was based on gothic fonts, and actually, we may say that gothic was at least in some use up untill 1940s! Which is insane.

    Another excellent video ! Hey if you are a fan of unique Gothic text & script...have a look into the Italian / Gothic script called “Beneventan”. It’s a fun one to play with and looks very handsome when adorned across a lovely piece of paper. Its executed very well with the same variety & size nib you frequently use. Samples of the full script can be found in old text photos online...Beneventan....worth a look!

    This is a very good point. I make them up, since they don't necessarily appear in medieval manuscripts. Once I have studied the main strokes of a script, they can be applied to numbers and punctuation marks as well. This topic is a good idea for a potential video, though! Thank you!

    Hello. I'm just at the beginning of calligraphy journey. And your video is the first one you get on search request "textura quadrata". Thank you very much for being so accurate and clear explaining this script. And I have one question. I've seen some textura quadrata scripts (basically in books "Calligraphy's Bible" and "The Art of Calligraphy") and they have "dimonds" or "quadrum" as Paul Antonio calls them. But here you show script with feet, but not diamonds. Can you please explain why is so??? Thank you.

    I've just finished a calligraphy course for beginners about Foundational and now I would like to study other type of style. So your video comes at the right moment! 🙂 I followed your tutorial but I'm not really much satisfied of my work. I'm struggling with space between paragraph and words and height and width of the letters are not always the same 😅 I should practice more! Thank you so much for all your inspiring video! ☺️ Keep it up!

    I am so happy to hear that my video is helpful to you! Yes, spacing is the hardest part about calligraphy, in my opinion. I would suggest preparing the page with more pencil guidelines while you get used to it. For example, have the two main lines that I show here encasing the pen width marks, then also draw lines for the ascenders and descenders. Also, think about the space between letters as one pen width. Hope this helps!

    So excited to be practicing this but finding that as a lefty I’m having a problem seeing where to line up the strokes. Any advice will be appreciated. Tomorrow I will try sitting at a different desk to see if that helps. Also I write with my paper the proper angle, I don’t write with my hand all curled or paper facing backwards as many lifted handed people do. I was able to make one or two really beautiful r’s~~woo hoo.

    @SolisScriptorivm

    I don't have personal experience being a lefty, so maybe not the best person to give you advice, but I'd say focus on the angle of the pen in relation to the lines on the paper rather than in relation to your hand. Also, I've heard being an underwriter helps a lot with calligraphy and fountain pens in general.

    Since I'm basically learning this from you, practicing my lines are all trembling and I didn't get how to make them steadily straight and, voilà, only now watching again I realized you do push the nib quite, against the paper. Is it so? That would help controlling the "straightness" (Again thanks for doing these video and sorry for my probably stupid question..)💐⭐☺️

  • @SolisScriptorivm

    @SolisScriptorivm

    Not stupid at all! Yes, especially when going slowly, I push the nib against the paper. Figuring out the angle is the most important part, though. And you can play with the pressure of the nib to paper for smaller details.

    Close! The Gothic Textura Quadrata script was only widely in Germany in the 14th and 15th century. The Germans preferred a rounder script called Schwabacher, which later gave way to the Fraktur script which was used well into the 20th century and WWII. I'm sure the Gothic Textura Quadrata script was used in Germany in the 20th century for decoration occasionally, or to harken back to the olden days, but as widespread script it's days were long gone by then.
