GOSLINGS ATTACKED by HERONS CROWS and SEAGULLS

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

the Mute Swan cob doesn't want the Canada Geese raising their goslings on his lake. Whenever he sees them he chases them out of the water. The geese can easily flee but the goslings can't and become separated from their parents. Isolated, the goslings cannot survive for long and are an easy target for the Seagulls, Herons and Crows..
1) This GREY HERON has a nest nearby and two hungry chicks to feed. He prefers to stand in shallow water and wait for a fish to swim by but today he does not have the patience to wait. His babes are hungry and he has spotted a gosling on its own. He perches on a park bench to take a closer look and waits for it to come nearer but it seems to be moving away from him. He swoops down and lunges at it before it gets too far away and manages to pick it out of the water without too much trouble.
2) This CARRION CROW cannot swim and isn't usually seen near the water. It notices that the swan and geese are having a heated argument and boldly walks up to where they are. The crow isn't afraid of either of these birds even though they are much bigger, it can move much quicker and swifter than they. It behaves like an opportunist thief as it stoops down and pulls a gosling out of the water, whilst the geese are distracted. The geese are horrified and honk in despair but the crow isn't bothered and flies off.The crow plucks the feathers from the gosling before feasting on it.
3) This LESSER BLACK-BACK GULL is at home in the water, unlike the heron and the crow, who both prefer to have their feet on the ground when they catch their prey.
These seagulls are always hovering around this lake. Throughout spring , they are constantly trying to snatch a duckling, or a gosling, and they are experts at it. I was surprised that they were able to swallow the gosling whole.
This is the worst place for Canadian Geese to raise their young. They seem oblivious to the dangers that surround them. It is not only goslings that are being attacked but ducklings and grebe chicks too, mostly by seagulls. The heron and crow only get involved when the chicks come close to the land. There is no law and order in this world of birds, they can do whatever they want and get away with it. They have to survive and if that means eating another bird's chicks, then so be it. This is the way of nature.

Geese (and also ducks and swans) lay many eggs for this very reason: they count on the number so that at least a small part of the chicks can reach adulthood. The single chick is expendable, if saving it requires too much effort or endangers the other chicks (which would be left unprotected and exposed to other predators).

That's nonsense. In the meat industry, geese are killed at 10 weeks old. They are juveniles, similar to 2 or 3 year old humans. Female geese start laying at 2 years of age on average. When animals are farmed for meat, they are usually killed as either juveniles or adolescents. They only live to adulthood if they are used for breeding. And even then, they get killed when they are too old (not necessarily sterile, but old enough to hurt their reproductive success). And even if the farm was a better living condition than the wild, that does make it OK. Imagine if people captured humans and bred them as slaves, and the slaves had a better life than many humans as they were fed properly and didn't have to worry about money, education or work. And most of them were desexed, reducing their sexual/romantic desires significantly so they didn't have to worry about that, and were happy being virgins and single. They never had to die slow, painful deaths because they would be euthanised if they were severely ill, whether they liked it or not. And they were lead to believe that their owners were good and weren't exploiting them, so that they would not rebel or suffer. They didn't feel like they weren't free, for they were free range. What happens to animals in the wild doesn't justify keeping them in capitivity. Even if they have a better life in capitivity, because domesticated animals are bred, not taken from the wild. And animals taken from the wild have a worse life in capitivity. And breeding animals in capitivity is really bad for the environment and wildlife. Another thing is that the geese in the video are Canada geese (Branta canadensis). Domestic geese are Anser anser domesticus, with a few breeds being Anser cygnoides domesticus instead. So perhaps I should have compared the lives of the slaves to chimpanzees rather than other humans. If wild animals were farmed for meat, their meat would probably taste gamey, as livestock have been domesticated for meat.

The main problem for the geese is the swan, he won't allow them to raise their young in this lake. He constantly attacks the geese whenever he sees them with their young. If the swan wasn't there, the geese wouldn't be separated from their goslings and would be in a far better position to protect them against the predatory birds.

Most animals larger than them, humans included, can pretty much instantly rag doll a goose if they decide they’re not going to be intimidated. As more people are starting to say, swans are what geese think they are, so it was pretty interesting to see a swan tormenting adults and picking off goslings.

You’ve clearly had very limited exposure to them. I’ve worked a lot of landscaping jobs and run into major flocks often. These geese go out of their way to exterminate the young of any birds that live in the area. They will chase these birds down, even when they are keeping well away from the geese, and systematically kill every duckling they see, usually by grabbing them and slamming them around or otherwise brutalizing them. As a result, I have no sympathy anymore for geese and strongly feel that turnabout is fair play.

Nature isn't nice, nature just is. And when Canada geese get to spawning a bit too prolifically, predatory birds will step it up and make sure the numbers don't get out of control. It's interesting to see the differences in behavior like the OP notices: herons stalk in and grab what it looks like is theirs by right, crows dart in, grab and fly away fast like they are stealing something. And the seagull? Now that's a Chad. Makes a snatch and misses, so comes back and grabs a chick half it's size, and proceeds to swallow it down whole all casual-like.

Yeah this mute swan cob is pretty mean. he has bit me in the face once which was nice....not, he only tolerates your existence if you bring food. i go to this park a few times per week and its either serene or utter chaos. on the other hand the pen is very sweet, and so were the Cygnets from last year (who unfortunately we lost during winter to bird flu apparently :( should be a new brood soon though) and the geese are pretty entertaining to interact with, although some sacrificial seeds or veggies are a requirement. but yeah this cob is very aggressive to the goslings, he will chase them all the time when they are young. all birds are cool though. and nice video!

not just canadian goslings . I am surpised there are any ducks left . Gulls ,and crows do not have the fear of predation anymore. the odd Sparrow hawk will take one but Goshawks and eagle owls need to be re introduced to take out these merciless killers As for Heron they will kill anything.

The video here I think is an extreme case. The combination of inexperienced goose parents, and a territoriality aggressive mute swan provided this opportunity. Experienced goose parents not only protect most, if not all their goslings, the most successful ones even adopt(sometimes forcefully) other goslings and form gang broods. The window for eating goslings is pretty small as well. They practically double in size in less then two weeks.
